Resident Evil is entering its 30th anniversary this year, 2026. What better way to celebrate then to drench myself in the history of the series through the different mediums. Whether it’s admiring the gnarly art of graphic novels, reading the actual novelizations of the vast stories in the universe, playing some of the previous games, even appreciating the CG straight to home videos and reliving the Milla Jovovich questionable movies, I want to live and breathe the BIOHAZARD in. Especially in anticipation of the next chapter: REQUIEM.

Going to keep it short and simple because the whole story for Code: Veronica is split into four trade paperback volumes of graphic novels. (About 140 pages each) This is my second favorite in the series after RE2. So it got a grand comic adaption. This second volume continues the gorgeous art work by Hui King Sum.

This one was quite fast paced, but in the good way of nonstop action. Each panel vibrant and cinematic with the fight scenes. There continues to be cool close-up panels and thrilling full page shots. You can really feel the motion of these comics, I love when the medium can make you feel that. I really can’t say enough great things of the artwork. The story went by in a breeze. Although the action is main focus, we still get moments with traversal puzzles and that 90s “bad ass” one liners.

Granted the Ashford weirdness does not age well but also it’s so exaggerated that it could just fall into the category of comedic camp. There’s a theatricality to the insanity. At the end of the day, he’s still a villain. It is a valid critique that people could interpret Claire as at least a bit phobic. The infamous “You cross-dressing freak!” line is present. The trope of flamboyant villains is tiredly prevalent in this time period.
