Gave me throwbacks to grade 8 history class! I enjoyed this book SO much. I’ve always loved learning about the Meyers family (from the Belleville area) and had so much fun reading this again. The only reason it’s only 4 stars is because there were way more details (and names) than I remember from when I read it years ago. I’m excited to read the next 2 books over the rest of the week!

Really, 2.5 stars.
The core of the story is good.

As it is now, the book keeps drawing the reader away from the story. Polly? Is that the mother? Why/when did Hans Waltermeyer become John Meyer? George has adventures that are designed to bring in more of the context of the times but feel forced. Characters are interesting but undeveloped and inconsistent.

I love that the author is bringing people, times, and perspectives to young readers, but I wish she had had a great editor. The book could have been a gem.

A solid book that covers the American Revolution from the point of a home-bound Loyalist teen boy. I liked this book for its perspective and the way it explored the mind of a teen boy, while still including lots of action.

During the American Revolution, a boy named George was left at home by his father, so he could go to war. Since he was the oldest in the family, it was his job to look after them and the farm.
They got a new dog and named it Boots, since their other dog followed the dad when he left. George and his family went on many dangerous adventures to get to New York City past the Rebels to the Loyalists.
After they got a pass to New York City, but George was not able to go because he was told that he had to stay and help his grandfather on the farm. George was not about to stay at the farm so he got up and traveled to New York City to be with his dad and family to take care of them.
I couldn`t put the book down. It was that amazing. In the beginning of the book it was kind of boring, but around chapter 7 it gets a lot more interesting.
