For Times of Trouble : Spiritual Solace from the Psalms

Rate this book
Our Father in Heaven wants us to be happy. And yet, we all have times of trouble. As Elder Jeffrey R. Holland writes, "One of the unfailing facts of mortal life is the recurring presence of trouble.... When these difficult days (and nights!) come—and they will—it will help us to remember that 'it must needs be,' that in the grand councils of heaven before the world was, we agreed to such a time of challenge and refinement. We were taught then that facing, resolving, and enduring troublesome times was the price we would pay for progress. And we were committed to progress eternally."

A large percentage of the psalms that appear in the Bible were written for just such times of trouble. From petitions for relief to acknowledgments of God's power, from pleas to praise, these psalms provide comfort, perspective, and spiritual solace when we are going through our own trials.

In this tender book, Elder Holland explores dozens of scriptural passages from the psalms, offering personal ideas and insights and sharing his testimony that "no matter what the trouble and trial of the day may be, we start and finish with the eternal truth that God is for us." Elder Holland's reflections on the psalms provide a powerful witness of that comforting truth.

The subtitle of this book is - Sprititual Solace From the Psalms. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland is one of those special people that can ease your mind and spririt. Love and compassion just emanate from him. The dvd that comes with the book is just as soothing and touching even though I've only seen a few minutes of it. He sits in a beautiful room with a number of people and answers their questions, always putting them, and the viewer, in touch with how much our Heavenly Father loves and cares for us. Very beautiful and so soothing. I think every woman should own a copy since we have a tendancy to be so hard on ourselves.

A neat fact Elder Holland points out is that "Jesus Himself quoted the book of Psalms more than any other Old Testamnet text."

The Psalms included encompass many thougths, prayers, and supplications that many of us have probably spoken aloud or thought in our hearts. Here are a few he includes:

Psalms 6:2-4, 6, 8; 57:1

Have mercy upon my, O Lord, for I am weak: O Lord, heal me; for my bones are vexed. My soul is also sore vexed; but thou, O Lord, how long? Return, O Lord, deliver my soul; oh save me for thy mercies' sake....I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears...Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity; for the Lord hath heard the voice of my weeping. - Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me; for my soul trusteth in thee; yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamaties are past.

Psalms 18:36; 94:18-19

Thou hast enlarged my steps under me, that my feet did not slip. - When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O Lord, held me up. In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.

I could go on and on some more :) Needless to say, I love this book. I feel our Father's love through His word, and through the words of his servants.

While Jeffrey R. Holland is LDS, I feel this book has truths members of all Christian religions can benefit from. This book filled my heart and gave me renewed hope.

There is much to quote and ponder on, but here are two I enjoyed from this book:

"The redemptive role of the light of Christ is an important doctrine in the restored gospel. We believe that every single individual born into this world carries and keeps that light in his or her soul, no matter what time or transgression might do in an attempt that extinguish it. It cannot be fully extinguished. If we give that light a chance, it will be the means of seeing light. It will grow to become the everlasting light by which all men, women, and children can recognize the truth, respond to it, and make covenants with the Lord." -Jeffrey R. Holland, For Times of Trouble, 76

"It is very clear that anyone, including the righteous, who enters the chaotic currents of life is going to face trials and tribulations along the way. One popular writer said that expecting a trouble-free life because you are a good person is like expecting the bull not to charge you because you are a vegetarian."

This is the best book!! It has helped me through devastation and Elder Holland is so inspirational, dealing with. I had one mailed to my sister and getting one for my mom. Elder Holland is a wonderful man who has dealt with heartbreak also and explains his understanding of how we must pay some sort of price, even if it is nowhere near what Christ suffered. He is inspirational and brings the Spirit of God to his audience and readers. I absolutely adore Elder Holland as he has such a way of communicating sometimes very difficult to hear messages. And yet, you can see in his eyes, he has dealt with so much in his life, but he has leaned on Christ to get through it. His messages are nothing short of inspirational and full of love and understanding.

His new book, For Times of Trouble: Spiritual Solace from the Psalms, is particularly relevant now. Few of us could say that we don’t find ourselves in troubling times. We’ve each experienced financial difficulty, marital stress, worry over a child, or health problems. We’ve also watched the world become more wicked and the things of God be pushed to the background. Whether we address the question from a personal standpoint or in reference to the world in general, we are indeed familiar with times of trouble.

Elder Holland begins the book by stating that it’s more devotional in content than this other books, and that the essays included are meditative in nature. Because of this, he feels that this book shouldn’t be considered doctrine handed down from the Church itself. I thought that was an interesting way to begin the discussion-he wants his readers to have no doubt that these are his thoughts and his alone. I highly doubt that he would ever publish something that went against Church doctrine, but I still appreciated that statement as it shows his concern that his words and the intent behind them never be confused for something they’re not.

From there, we enter one of the most beautifully presented books I’ve ever seen. Every so often through the volume, we are treated to a full-color painting that illustrates the psalm being discussed. Then we begin at the start of the book of Psalms and read Elder Holland’s thoughts on his favorite verses. He expounds upon the things actually taught in the scriptures, and then includes the thoughts and feelings he’s had while he’s read them. He brings in other scriptures to underscore the point, quotes from other authorities and authors, and shares insights from his own experiences. These short essays bring the Psalms to life in a more three-dimensional way than ever before and invite the reader to ponder the deeper meanings for himself.

As with any book written on a spiritual topic, it’s important for the reader to take the information given and test it out against their own spiritual discernment for a confirmation of the truth. This book, for me, was a refreshing, peaceful break from the chaos of the world around me. I appreciated the words of comfort as spoken by the Psalmist and expounded upon by an Apostle. I appreciated having the chance to ponder this often-overlooked book of scripture. Perhaps most of all, I appreciated the testimony born throughout. Elder Holland has obviously studied the Psalms often, and wove his thoughts together with a sure hand.

For an extra bonus, this book comes with a DVD that features two hours of questions and answers with Elder Holland and a live audience.

We do live in troubled times, but as we stay close to the Lord, we can and will have the strength to make it through and even thrive. This is the message Elder Holland gives us

I very much enjoyed this book and have recommended it to my friends. I always enjoy Elder Holland's talks and his unique ability to explain his message in a clear and definite manner. Some of the chapters gave me great cause to pause and reflect on issues that occur in my daily life. Taking the time to ponder is a special gift as you reach a point in life where time is no longer of the essence.

Our Father in Heaven wants us to be happy. And yet, we all have times of trouble. As Elder Jeffrey R. Holland writes, "One of the unfailing facts of mortal life is the recurring presence of trouble . . .

A large percentage of the psalms that appear in the Bible were written for such times of trouble. From petitions for relief to acknowledgments of God's power, these psalms provide comfort, perspective, and spiritual solace when we are going through our own trials.

Highly Recommend. Have found that Elder Holland strongly touches my heart and gives me the encouragement and spirit that helps in so many ways. I love this man so very much.

I have quite literally been amazed by my Elder Holland cram session! I work at a book store. It is kind of like when the chocolate addict Augustus Gloop finally finding himself in Willy Wonka's Chocolate factory and shoves his face into the chocolate river-I lose my mind sometimes with my love affair with literature and I'm just feeding my book addiction ALL OF THE TIME by choosing to work in the wonderful smell of fresh paper and baked goods!!!! I have a constant relationship with the written word...but anywho-moving on! There is a silly rule (okay it's not silly-I just wanted to feel justified about what I did) that we have to wait a month to check a recently released book out of our work library so everyone has a chance to become familiar with it on their lunch breaks and then when that month is up it is free game and we can take it home and read it to our hearts content! Normally I obey this rule...just not when it comes to a brand new Elder Jeffrey R. Holland book/DVD combo! The temptation was just too darn much! ;) I snuck this book out of my work library because like a little child on Christmas day I just couldn't wait to read it. I took it Saturday night and knew I had until Monday to read/watch this amazing book. I read and watched it all in one setting hence my phrase cram session. (Okay seriously-am I not the worst thief ever?! I just wrote a full confession to you all!) But here's my next confession: It was totally worth it!!! ;) This book is fantastic. We all have our struggles and trials in life. This book is for the soul looking for some spiritual inspiration to get through or even just endure and wait out the adversity that has been set upon us all as human beings. Elder Holland takes specific Psalms and adds his own spiritual insights to how we can apply them and take comfort from them. O hey did I mention that it comes with a two hour DVD of Elder Holland giving EXTRA insight on the subject of spiritual solace in times of trial? Because it does! Elder Holland has given you a cookie and then BONUS poured you a glass of milk to go with it! And it is a heartwarming and eye opening seminar that should not be missed. Are you just dying to know all my favorite parts?! Good cuz I'm totally going to write them down! This is just a little bit of what I gained from this awesome cram session! p.s. you don't have to read on if you don't want-it's a bit long but so good-this was just what my soul needed right now and I want to remember it! :)

"For me personally, no view in mortality is more awe-inspiring than standing alone on a night completely void of earthly light and seeing the star-filled heavens fully appear. To me it is the most overwhelming view in nature. Of course, what we see with the naked eye is only a small part of one-our own-tiny little galaxy. Aided by the magnificent lenses of space telescopes and galactic photography, we can see more of other "worlds without number." Truly "night [after] night sheweth knowledge," the knowledge of God. And there is no country or culture on this entire planet over which the stars are not constantly shining, constantly testifying of His omniscience and omnipotence. Neither is there any limit to space, any spot in the universe where the majesty of God's creation is not unfolding. All these things are "the work of [God's] fingers." And yet the greatest of all His works is a man, a woman, a child, any "ordinary" being who walks among us. Some of those people are in trouble, some have had great misfortune, some have had difficulties through no fault of their own, and some have had burdens that were in great measure of their own making. But whatever condition they may be in, the greatest of God's creations are His children-us. In all of those heavenly creations that are so stunning to see on a clear, starry night, we are the ones that are just "a little lower than the angels," which in Hebrew is rendered "a little lower than Elohim [the Gods]." As such, we are crowned with glory and honor here and with the promise of glory and honor there. C.S. Lewis once said that if we could recognize who we were, we would realize that we are walking with "possible gods and goddesses" whom, if we could see them in all their eternal dignity and glory, we would be tempted to fall down and worship. Because this is true, we need to think more highly of ourselves and we need to think more highly of each other....We need to honor the divinity that is within all humankind. In doing so, we will be returning to God at least some of that glory and honor with which He has crowned us. In a world-or should we say, in a universe-of large troubles and small, a world of physical, financial, political, and social forces seemingly beyond our control, there can be moments when we also wonder, "Do I matter in all of this? Can my small and sometimes painful place in the great scheme of things amount to much? Can God know me or have time for me or hear my prayers? With all that needs divine attention in the world-famines, wars, pestilence, sin-can my heart be known, understood, and seen as important in the grand expanse of the universe?" On difficult, discouraging days almost everyone asks such questions. But the eternal truth, the timeless declaration is "yes" to all of the questions above and more. The great eternal truth is that this entire plan of life, the plan for our salvation, is an outline for each man and woman, each boy and girl, individually. By name, place, and personal circumstance God knows us and our needs. He knows our hopes and dreams and He knows our fears and frustrations. Above all, He knows who we really are and what we can become through faith in Him. If we will be faithful-literally "full of faith"-especially in times of trouble, then we can hear that truth whispered to us as we gaze into the star-filled night.
I wander through the still of night,
When solitude is ev'rywhere-
Alone, beneath the starry light,
And yet I know that God is there.
I kneel upon the grass and pray;
An answer comes without a voice.
It takes my burden all away
And makes my aching heart rejoice."

"I know in my own life...that salvation is not a cheap experience. The road to salvation always goes through Gethsemane. And it will always require a journey to the summit of Calvary. The Savior says, "Come follow me." But what we have to be fully prepared for is that some of that journey will be into at least the borderlands of Gethsemane and at least somewhere in the shadow of Calvary. "

"My convictions and my feelings for the Savior of the world have been born in the most desperate hours of my life. When I wondered whether the sun would ever come up again. It seemed to come up for other people, it seemed to come up every morning for everybody else I could see, but not for me. Now it's not always like that, and it's not supposed to always be like that and we're a little self-pitying if we act like it's always like that. But some parts of the discipleship require that walk. Basically His walk. But to some degree that love for Him, and that feeling for Him, and the majesty that He is, cannot come, except, in anguish. It's being in a place where you say, "Is there any other cup I could drink but this one? Is there any other way but this?" and God says to you what He says to the Savior and which is, "Nope. Not this time." But He always gives strength, always help. It's not fatal. Nobody's going to die and it isn't really crucifixion. It's just anguish and sorrow and...pleading. That's how it works."

I really enjoyed this study of the Psalms from Elder Holland. Each chapter examines one or even a portion of one of the Psalms and gives his commentary. Over the last few months, when I have been feeling down or just not close to God, it has been easy to pick this book up and read a few pages for some positive inspiration.

Two parts greatly impacted my life—the promise that if you want a close relationship with Heavenly Father, the easiest way is through prayer (regular verbal prayer at that). Of course, other things are important, but prayer is the most essential and basic. The other part is a bit more personal but validated something I’ve often felt.

I also adored the reminder that there are definite protections to be found in prayer, which motivates me to continue praying for those I love.

There are also beautiful illustrations with quoted psalms inside this book. And each chapter cuts to the quip and is appropriately short. There’s also a sassy quote from Abraham Lincoln that made me love him even more.

The psalms are a treasure trove and all about relying on the Lord.

Psalm 55:16-17 “As for me, I shall call upon God; and the Lord shall save me. Evening, and morning, and at noon will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.”

I have really come to love Elder Holland's words of comfort and peace. In "For Times of Trouble" he goes through the Psalms and highlights certain verses and expounds on them. It's written so the reader can just read a short reflection each day if one wanted to. I loved the beautiful, old illustrations throughout. Nicely done book.

A beautifully written tender book, with Elder Holland's personal teaching and insight regarding the Psalms. I loved this book. Many times it brought me to tears as Elder Holland taught of the Savior's tender mercy and love for each of us.

There are 3 sections to this book. My favorite is the 3rd session, devoted entirely to the 23rd Psalm. "If we are anxious, the psalm gives us courage and we overcome our fears. If we are grieving, it offers comfort and we find our way through the valley of the shadow of death. If our lives are embittered by unpleasant people, it teaches us how to deal with them. If the world threatens to wear us down, the psalm guides us to replenish our souls. If we are obsessed with what we lack, it teaches us gratitude for what we have. And most of all, if we feel alone and adrift in a friendless world, it offers us the priceless reassurance that "Thou are with me." (Page 202)

This book was written in such a personal way, it felt as if Elder Holland was sitting beside me, teaching the beautiful truths contained in the psalms. It is a treasure.

This should have been printed on neon yellow paper to save me time. I wanted to highlight all of it.
Every other page begins with a verse or more from Psalms, followed by Elder Holland's thoughts on that verse. It's not heavy on doctrine, as he states in the preface - this was intended; it's heavy on heart. If you've heard him speak, you can imagine how soulful this book is. His insight is far-reaching and never ceases to amaze me. After I read each psalm, I would try to think what he (or I) might derive from the phrase. And then would I go on and read the most eloquent, spiritual interpretation, which set the tone for my day and made it beautiful.

What is there NOT to love about everything that flows from Jeffrey R. Holland's mouth? The DVD is incredible and I have listened to it dozens of times already when I'm cooking or cleaning in the kitchen. In this book there aren't just words of comfort and understanding, but there is so much doctrine as well. It's incredible.

Love this book!

Name two categories of people we would least like to be associated with or compared to and surely "the foolish" and "the wicked" would be at the top of the list.  Why do we then spend time, money, or emotion envying what is not admirable or trying to become like people with whom we don't really want to associate? Jesus said, "By their fruits ye shall know them." Does it not follow that foolish possessions reveal foolish people or, worse yet, that evil practices reveal wicked people and sinister motives? Alexander Pope wrote that "to err is human," and that is probably so, but surely to want what is in error, to envy it and long for it and lust after it, is inhuman --- or at least unworthy.
Jeffrey R Holland For Times of Trouble

We can avoid a lot of sorrow and disappointment if we learn to envy less, enjoy what we do have more, and give to those who truly need it.
Jeffrey R Holland For Times of Trouble

These are some of the same things that keep us from peace in our world. Fears of a thousand kinds, real or imagined, where faith has not been cultivated. Conflicts with family or friend or foe, almost all of which could be eliminated if the gospel of Jesus Christ were allowed to prevail. Petty, pesky, pesty little disturbances of no eternal consequence that nevertheless irritate and annoy. Temporal appetites that intrude upon and finally distract us from spiritual pursuits. If we desire peace and tranquility in our lives, we need to anticipate, address, and overcome these kinds of intrusions. That is easier said than done, but we ought to work at this, thereby allowing us to spend as much time as we can enjoying the green pastures God would like to give us.

I have picked up this book and read sections now and then over the past five years. Thankfully I wrote notes and dates for what I thought of passages as I read so I could remember what I learned and how long I've been studying these reflections.

Line upon line.

I learn best and deepest from the dews from heaven distilling on my soul rather than a firehose blasting out decrees I can't process or place. Books are so handy for both methods as appropriate.

I appreciated so many new ideas I learned here about how to apply the peace of various verses to my situations. It wasn't all sober, though respectful. Moments of frank talk made me feel like someone I could relate to wrote these verses rather than yet another impossibly elevated personage who was tossing crumbs to me. Nope. None of the superiority, lots of the "me too."

The arrangement of the reflections was: first excerpts from verses of the psalms - those I could immediately apply to the troubles I have, do, and most likely will face before this mortal life ends; second, the Messianic psalms which gave me new insight on how to read them; finally, a slower pace as thoughts on each portion of Psalm 23 were shared. For research lovers, the notes, citations, and scriptural index at the end is a gift for diving deeper into the subject.

I join with the psalmist and Elder Holland in saying, The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want, "in times of trouble and always."

I've always loved Holland's writing style. Most of his published works are compilations of speeches and addresses he's given, but this book is a refreshing change of pace in that it's essentially a pet project of his, something that he wrote specifically to publish as a book and not as a speech.

This book encapsulates the best things about Elder Holland's signature style: his ability to make scriptural text more personal and accessible and his sensitivity towards those who suffer and feel lost and alone. It's a solid treatment of the Psalms from a theological and scholastic point of view, with commentary on translations and poetic devices. More importantly, this book really does provide "spiritual solace," applying the language of the Psalms to the personal experiences the modern reader might be going through and offering comfort and a broader perspective on the things that weigh us down.

I love Elder Holland's public addresses, but I also loved this more intimate approach. It is clear that he took the time to write this book because he connects deeply and personally with the Psalms. That connection resonates and makes it easier as a reader to feel what he so beautifully expresses.

I got this book as a gift for my birthday. I had been going through some tough medical issues and there were certain parts of this book that gave me so much peace in regards to my struggles (which I am still dealing with but now I don’t feel so defeated by them). Normally I like to sit down and “binge” read a book but this isn’t a book I would recommend doing that with. The different sections cover so many topics and I might even recommend reading it by whatever topic you’re looking for insight on (there is an index in the back which would lend itself nicely to this approach). The entire thing is definitely worth reading though so I wouldn’t *only* read it in that manner. You never know when the words of encouragement might be beneficial to you or to a loved one.

My mom purchased this book for me years ago and then it sat in my nightstand, waiting to be read.

A few weeks ago, I realized the next gospel doctrine lesson I would be teaching would cover the entire book of Psalms😳 I stumbled across this forgotten text and started reading.

Elder Holland has a beautiful gift of teaching and this book was no exception. His reflections were a little like reading out of his scripture journal and made the Psalms come to life and become applicable to day to day living and understanding. Reading how he applied the Psalms and interpreted them, made them more understandable and poignant. It increased my understanding and love for the Psalms.

Wonderful book! I love the thoughts that Jeffrey R Holland shared from the Psalms. These cover a wide variety of topics. Jeffrey R Holland just has such a realistic way of speaking, or in this case writing, to people. Everything he writes is relevant to the struggles of life. In the meantime he inspires us to be better people. An author that is understanding, tells you how it is, provides hope, and inspires to be better all in one...wow! This book contained all of these elements. I think that any book that provides hope is worth reading.

I started this book in September 2022 in conjunction with my study of the Old Testament, specifically the Psalms. It took a long time to finish this book, not because I didn't like it but because last year (2023) I studied the New Testament. I'm so glad I finished it and didn't just remove it from my list. This book is thought-provoking and inspiring regardless of when you read it. I particularly enjoyed the section on Psalms 23, The Lord is My Shepherd. This is a book I will read again in the future when I'm studying the Psalms again.

Great book on the psalms.

I have never read a book that contained a better understanding of the psalms. My eyes were opened to much more than the words shown, so that a deeper understanding was in my grasp. I think I need to read it again and again, so I can learn more about pondering over the scriptures for a deeper meaning.

I particularly enjoyed his exegesis on the 23rd psalm, the section on the crucifixion/atonement psalms, and the artwork. You can tell that he's aware of the technical academic literature on the psalms but he doesn't get bogged down in the nitty gritty. Might be useful as a one-section-a-day type book. Very inspiring.

Each of Elder Holland's chapters are his thoughts on one or more verses from the Psalms. Each is easy to read and quickly done. My favorite part was at the end and dealt with Psalm 23. Each few verses had insights into them and spoke of our Savior in His role as our shepherd and what He will do for us.

I loved this book. It reminded me of how much I love the psalms and how hopeful they are. It truly was a bright spot in my day and a source of light every day that I read it.

Knowing the Lord is
My shepherd brings solace to
