GOTHAM ACADEMY is back with an all-new storyline for its second semester! When you're Olive Silverlock, winter holidays can be a drag. Luckily, when a new student shows up at Gotham Academy to keep her company while the other students are away, Olive finds what could be a brand new friend…or a whole lot of trouble!

So glad that the yearbook arc is over! I loved the ending and I'm super excited to get back to what made me fall in love with this series in the first place.
'Gotham Academy: Second Semester #1' by Becky Cloonan with art by Adam Archer feels more like a winter break filler, but has potential to bring new storylines.
Olive Silverlock is left alone at school during the winter holidays. A teacher befriends her, but then stands her up. She also gets a new roommate named Amy who seems like she's going to be trouble. Add in a trip to creepy Wedgwood Museum and a couple interesting secrets and you have the start of a sort of gothic mystery.
I've read a few issues here and there and I really want to like this concept, but it just hasn't done it for me so far. This issue feels like a prelude, and there is nothing wrong with that, but for a school that seems to be so empty, there sure seem to be a few people around. I don't know Olive or Eric's backstories, but they seem interesting enough. I don't know what I want in this title, but it just hasn't happened for me yet.
I received a review copy of this issue from DC Entertainment and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this comic book.
Olive gets a new roommate Amy. Amy talks Olive into doing something stupid. This issue is back up to standards. I mean secret passage ways, who doesn’t like those? But I don’t like this character Amy, she is such bad news. Finally Maps returns. It leaves me begging for another issue. Definitely good again.
I think this was a little slow for a first issue , but that may be just me. I surprised myself that I enjoyed volume.1 of Gotham academy, and I did enjoy this issue. The artwork has really grown on me. Some panels are absolutely beautiful.
Story wise this started out a tad slow. But as always I think the students at Gotham academy will get into some trouble soon enough. One of my favorite things about this series is that it's an all-age comic series. Very rare nowadays.
If you enjoyed the first series of this, I'm sure you'll want to see what happens next. If you've never read Gotham Academy, this is a great time to jump in on the fun.
I received an advanced copy of this from NetGalley.com and the publisher.
Uhhhh...this is aimed pretty young. I can hop onboard a bit of YA fiction from time to time, but...I’m not sure if this is gonna fit the bill. It’s obviously a continuation from an earlier story, and I’m immediately completely lost, which might be okay, but the characters are really juvenile. Plus, oh yeah, look, it’s another delinquent asshole who just happens to have a partially shaved head and lots of earrings. :eyeroll:
I’m giving it a 3 for now, because it’s still pretty cute, and I keep thinking the one girl’s name is Olive Sherlock, which irrationally makes me like her more, lol
But, wtf does this have to do with the Rebirth arc?? Anonymous Reddit person, I am casting some shade your way...
Holy shit, Amy is the worst. Eric could have died and Olive (spoiler for issue 2 I guess) just forgives her for being a straight up bitch, stealing Eric's work and locking Olive and him away for no reason other than because she's spiteful and rude. Also, why is everyone so horrible to Eric? He's just a kid with a crush who likes investigating stuff. Him and Maps are actually very similar with the latter, so I feel like Eric should have a bigger role than some kid who gets beaten up and harassed just because he's a little weird.
Thought I'd give this series another try, but this didn't convince me to keep reading. The story jumps around way too much and the dialogue and characterization all felt a little pat.
DC's Facebook page has a bad habit of spoiling their comics before I can read them, so I knew the big surprise at the end of this arc before I read #1. Still, it's a good story for fans of the Gotham Academy characters, even though very few of them are in this issue. I can't wait to get the rest of the story, though I may wait for the trade paperback instead of buying each issue.
