Mystic Ink

Rate this book
Welcome to Mystic, Connecticut, where a Satyr owns the local pawn shop, a Minotaur serves the tastiest pizza in town, and the nearest gate to the Underworld resides in the alley outside a tattoo parlor.

Nix–Sea Nymph, talented artist and proprietor of Mystic Ink–just wants to run her tattoo shop in peace and quiet. Peace and quiet, however, are the least of her problems. Mortal corpses keep springing up in her alley like daisies. Hades is angry that the mortals’ souls are missing. And to top it all off, the human authorities suspect Nix of foul play.

Before long, the supernatural police force takes an interest. They dispatch Agent Calder Quinne to investigate. His assignment is simple: determine Nix’s guilt or innocence by observing her daily routine. Instead, he’s faced with an uncooperative Nymph who resents his presence and evades him at every opportunity.

Nix finds Cal far too attractive and a challenge to her self-imposed ban on relationships. She wants him out of her life as soon as possible. When Cal’s soul is stolen next and Nix wakes up missing memories of the evening’s events, even she starts to wonder if she’s guilty. Now, she has only two weeks to locate Cal’s missing soul, or he’ll be doomed to spend eternity as a Shade.

**Warning, slightly spoilerish**

Meh, it was alright. The writing was perfectly readable and it was well edited. I have no complaints on that front. But the story had a number of elements that I just plain dislike. For one, though Nix was the main character and the events centred around her, it wasn't her who saved the day. Nope, Gods forbid the woman be in on the important action. Instead she ran around from the start of the book until the end, encountering and being attacked by one mythological creature after another. Note, not intentionally doing anything but instead reacting to a presented stimuli. Then in the end, all her male protectors went behind her back and saved the day. It was subtle, but all the impetus was taken by the men. At one point Cal even asked her, Do you trust me?...Then hold your questions a little longer. In other words she not only wasn't in on the action, she wasn't even allowed to ask about it. This was all further exasperated by the fact that all of the power players were Gods. The only real Goddess you get to know is vapid and too busy with her facials and pedicures to be important.

Then there was the complete mishmash of pantheons. I get that this was intentionally. The D.L. was after all an alliance of them. But come on, first we're presented with the Greeks (including Sitars, Cyclops, Titans, Nymphs, Fates, Furies, Basilisk, etc), then the Egyptians. I'm still on board at this point. Then the Elves show up. Huh? And then Aliens! Really, WTF, it was just too much, too cluttered, too many disparate genre thrown together.

Then there was how easily everything wrapped up. The bad guy was defeated with absolute ease. More than once problems were overcome almost miraculously. Nix being able to call in a favour based on winning the office raffle the year before, for example. Thats handy. Cal was given his prize and avoided a fate worse than death despite technically not completing his quest. Then in the end Nix rails at her father for three or four minutes and manages to convince him to change the rules that have been in effect for, presumably, millennia. I seem to recall stubbornness being a trait of the gods. Plus, these were pantheon-wide rules, so they effected everyone, not just her. It was just too easy.

Now I know I've bitched a lot. I was annoyed by the end of the book. But as I said it was well written. There were some really fun characters. I especially liked Zeph and Devlin. I'm not discouraging anyone from reading it. Heck I might even pick up the sequel if I come across it. I enjoyed the read, just not every aspect of the book.

Review of Mystic Ink by Casey Wyatt

I must admit that I was put off by the blurb for this book. For some reason I wasn't in the mood to read about gods, goddesses, sea nymphs and satyrs. This book takes mythological creatures and plops them into a contemporary setting--a tattoo parlor in Mystic, Connecticut. I've read various books with this paranormal premise, including Sherrilyn Kenyon's series, which I loved before it became repetitive.

But I must say, right from the start, Wyatt hooked me with her writing. I'm a sucker for good writing. And this book is extremely well written. It flows flawlessly, the pacing is perfect, the characters are full-bodied and interesting (sort of like a good Merlot...yeah, I still have wine on the brain). It has a lot packed in here....teetering on the edge of too much. Many characters, lots of twists and turns in the plot. But in spite of this, Mystic Ink works. I loved the main characters, especially the adorable hero who is sexy, protective, and fearless. The heroine is spunky without being irritating. The secondary characters are plentiful and colorful. But I think the most important thing here is the pacing. I was sucked into the story, I wanted to find out what was going to happen. It never gets bogged down with too much information (which can happen easily in a complex paranormal story like this). The sexual tension builds nicely, and the love scenes are toasty hot. Wyatt also does a great job setting up the next story.

This is a great debut novel. I am most impressed with Wyatt's writing expertise and am wondering if she will branch out into other genres as well. I hope so. She's got a new fan.

Grade: A-

Amazingly, this was a surprising read. I honestly did not expect to enjoy this story as much as I did. The mythos Casey Wyatt creates is fun and the plot takes the reader on superb adventure right away. The hero and heroine, Calder and Nix (Eudora), are dynamic couple who love each other deeply. Niether one of them fits the mold they are born into under Greek Myth. Because of their originality in character, the reader is able to identify with them. The secondary characters are well written, too, and make the story more robust. I highly recommend this book.

Good read. A lot of characters even if they aren't in much of the book. Loved the God/Goddess premise. There seemed to be a lot going on not really relevant to the main story. Things got a little repetative at times as well. I enjoyed it though.

Mystic, Connecticut has always had a special place spot in my heart. I learned scuba diving from a Navy instructor who delighted in tying up my hoses and turning off my regulator. My test dive (which I passed) took place in the cold, murky waters of Mystic Seaport. So, imagine my delight to find a book that takes place in this historic seafaring town, one now populated by a veritable pantheon of giants, gods, demi-gods, Furies and Fates.

The stars of this cast of characters are Nix, a water nymph and Cal, the demigod son of Ares. Cal knows more about Nix than she knows about herself, including the fact that they were a hot and heavy item at one period of their long lives. Added to Nix's growing feeling that Cal knows more than he lets on, is the fact that the local police are beginning to be suspicious of the bodies that keep turning up at a dumpster outside Nix's tattoo parlor. And the story is off and running!

If you're looking for a fun, fast read about ancient mythology, I highly recommend this magical story by Casey Wyatt.

I was hooked from the very beginning with the constant adventure and intrigue (it took me most of the book to figure everything out which I found made the book even more interesting). Readers will experience solving the mysteries surrounding Nix and Cal, the two main characters, right alongside them.

The synopsis of this book was enough to make me curious about it to get it. However, after reading it I don't think I agree with it considering Calder was not there to investigate the dead mortals appearing outside of her shop let alone the souls not getting to the Underworld. Though I might have missed that as an excuse but I don't think so.

At any rate, I found this to be a unique look as to how one might look at the Gods and the mythological creatures interacting with the human world. The mystery was one that kept me intrigued through the entire book and questioning the "who done it." There was no cut and dry quick answer that you knew before the characters, which is a great big plus when reading a mystery. I liked the fact that Nix and Calder, along with other supporting characters were very real. They weren't just pretty boy or girl that everyone fell over and just handed the answers to. They were very real down to earth with their own weaknesses and in their own way broken. This was a part that I admired in both Nix and Calder and made me care more about them and made me want to cheer, cry, scream, and have my awwww moments throughout this book.

There is nothing better to have a book with these strengths. Characters that are strong and determined yet given weaknesses and working through them. A story line that has a good beginning that builds from that point and carries you throughout at times stuck in a forest so much that you can't see the trees only to make it through to the end and conquer with the answers being much more than you expected them to be.

this one was super interesting... I really liked the characters and the plot of the story but I felt like the events in between needed a bit of work.. there were things that happened in the story that were completely pointless and didn't contribute to the overall progression. in fact the characters even say so in the story so ur sitting there thinking so why did we waste time with this?.. but it was still really interesting and intriguing.i would still recommend it because it's very good at keeping ur attention.

Brilliant book!

Loved Nix as the ballsy heroine. A Nereid or sea Nymph that's not as vacuous as her sister. When she wears the Destroyer Mantle she takes on tasks, afterwards she has her memories wiped so she doesn't remember the terrible things she's done as the Destroyer.

Calder/Cal the man who she can't remember to love, but she's getting there. He remembers it all and tries to wait for her to fall back in love with him

Gods, Goddesses, Harpies, Fates, Basil the mouthy bird, Satyrs and many more come together to make this book a must read.

I liked it, I did. But it almost felt like there was too much to keep track of. The author kept throwing in more mythical creatures, more gods and goddesses, more of everything. Even aliens! I knew who the villain was right away, though not their motivation or anything. So for most of the book I was thinking "Come ooon, get to the Epic Battle already!"

Fantastic story with plenty of action

I never got bored while reading. Even when things were slow to build up anticipation, other things were going on to keep you glued. Cal was a hunk with a heart. Nix was spunky, yet still female. They knew their strengths and weaknesses and used them where they could.

Very intriguing story.

I really liked the way this story flows. The characters are fun and in depth. The TWISTS and turns left me wondering which way was up. But the story ended on a great note. Thank you for sharing this story.

Interesting

and we’ll written for what it was. As someone who found solace in the Greek and Roman myths I liked the characters and the allusions to the original stories. I might consider the next one, but this one was a nice stand alone.

Very enjoyable read.

I enjoyed the twists and turns of this story. Devlin's character was the most rewarding. Cal and Nix had just enough rocky roads to endure them and their relationship to the reader. I look forward to the next installment.

A truly delightful romp.

Tattoos, piercings, God's, Demigods and Fates, oh my! I really enjoyed this book. Great character development, plot and pace. I love a strong, feisty, female lead. Tattooed, handsome hunks are great as well. Great job!

I am not quite sure how this book came to my attention; it must have been if you liked this book then you may like this book recommendation on goodreads or amazon. I am so glad I took the recommendation; this was such a great book! This book was like the Percy Jackson series only for adults. There are all types of Gods and Goddesses, mythical creatures of all types and quests. It was fast paced and interesting, with curve balls thrown in to keep you guessing. The romance factor was high, but the actual sex scenes were low. If you like mythology, gods, and goddesses you’ll love this book.

I adored Nix, she was tough and stood on her own. She is not the type to just take orders and not question things, she is intelligent and wants to know why and make her own decisions. As the owner of Mystic Ink, she is also a guardian to the underworld, so when dead bodies start showing up in her alley she wants to know why. She is also a Destroyer, a keeper of peace if you will; she is one of the Elite forces that helps maintain peace within the immortal and human races. Between those two gigs and her day job of being a tattoo artist her days are full. If only she didn’t have Agent Calder looking over her shoulder, his presence pisses her off on principal, she doesn’t need a baby sitter, but underlying that is an overwhelming attraction to Cal. When his soul is stolen, Nix and Cal have to spend more time together and the more time they spend together the more confused she feels. She doesn’t understand why she knows things about him, she shouldn’t know. I truly enjoyed Nix she was such a great character.

Cal about breaks your heart, he’s been grieving for his lost relationship for a 100 years. For a 100 years he remembers that relationship past, but the girl doesn’t remember him. I can’t even imagine mourning a relationship for 100 years, so you know his love ran true. As an agent he has to push those feelings to the side and do everything he can to solve this case, because more than just his soul is on the line, but the fate of the world. He is a strong partner and an admirable man, despite the harsh conditions of how he grew up and being a son of Ares he remains true to himself and does the right thing. Being a son of Ares is no treat, its war all the time, his siblings would like nothing more to see him destroyed but he always perceivers against the odds. He has a backbone of steel but a heart of gold! You can’t not love Cal.

The one thing I would have wished for would have been more tattooing, but we can’t have everything. Lol I have no idea is this is going to be a series or not, from what I can tell from Goodreads it is a first for this author with no other scheduled publications at this time. However, I sincerely hope that this is a series that will continue as it was such a great find. Plus Nix has tons of sisters!

I liked this one! It was funky and fun with interesting worldbuilding (ancient gods are a favorite of mine!) and characters that you could get behind. The rules that the Gods, heroes, and miscellaneous demi-gods had to abide by made sense (although there were times that the restrictions those rules laid on what could and could not be done to help Nix and Cal out were aggravating) and the monsters that kept coming out of the woodwork kept everyone on their toes.

Nix and Cal were... sad, in a lot of ways. Nix's memory wipes left her not remembering knowing Cal in the past. Cal, on the other hand, is a big bundle of sexual tension because he can't tell her that they had a thing and he's got all these unrequited feelings for her. It was sad and sweet and then it exploded into sexy. Which was VERY nice.

There's enough world that was left unexplored with this book that I can see oodles of stories slithering out of the little town of Mystic. There are plenty of secrets left to unravel. I'm game.

I found this book to be very intriguing and a nice change of pace. The story is very faced paced and starts off with a bang. Nix thought she was on "vacation" from her job as a destroyer and was going to enjoy some down time running her uncle's tattoo shop. Not a chance! Now, not only does Nix have dead bodies showing up in the alley next to her tattoo shop, but her uncle is missing, her protector Cal has had his soul stolen and apparently she has to find the time to stop a plan that could mean the end of the world. The poor girl just can't catch a break! It would also help if her father did not keep erasing her memories, leaving her to wonder what she really does when she is working.

This was a great story with lots of adventure/action, very interesting characters and lots of mystery. I spent most of the story trying to piece the puzzle together along with Nix and Cal, hoping I could solve it before they did. I enjoyed all the supporting characters just as much as I did Nix and Cal, but I have to say Zephyr and Basil the parrot were my favorite. There is a cliff hanger involving Zephyr at the end which I hope means there will be another book.

Nix inherited a tattoo parlor named Mystic Ink from her uncle. Nix is a Neriad, a water nymph and gatekeeper to the afterlife. Dead people keep showing up in her alley that leads to the gate. This is not normal and the human police are getting suspicious. Nix is also a Destroyer. When a Destroyer accepts a mission they wear a mantle and when the mission ends so do their memories of those missions. Calder Quinn comes to observe Nix. Destroyers have been known to go mad after too many memory wipes. Some of her missing memories are of them working together and loving each other. Calder's soul goes missing and supers keep coming to Nix demanding the "Seal" and she has no idea of what they want. Meanwhile she ends up in fight after fight and her shop keeps getting busted up. There is a countdown to finding Calder's soul and to preventing the end of the human world. The Seal is a big part of it, can she solve all the riddles in time?

I really enjoyed Casey's Wyatt's MYSTIC INK. Her characters are not the standard paranormal romance fare (witches, vampires, werewolves), which is fresh and appealing to me. Her heroine, Nix, is funny, brash, and strong, and I loved spending time in her world. The tension between Nix and her love interest, Cal, is palpable from the beginning, and it increases deliciously as the story goes along. The plot is fast-paced and fun, with lots of interesting characters, plot twists, and witty dialogue. I will admit that I became a little muddled during some scenes of their adventures, but this may have been because I was reading at a good clip, trying to devour the story as fast as I could. I couldn't wait to see what happened! After reading MYSTIC INK, I am anxiously awaiting Casey's next project!

This was another "Greek Mythology with a twist" story in the paranormal genre, but it's twist was interesting and different enough to be a truly enjoyable read. I liked the strong heroine coming into her own and staying true to her desire to stand on her own without help from her godly father. The story also had a mystery aspect going for it as well, and though I was able to figure out who the "baddie" was, I was still surprised at some of the events of the final showdown. This book had a set up for a sequel, but there were no hints given as to what the consequences that one character had to deal with, so that I was curious enough to look up the sequel. I hooted with laughter at what happened to said character! Would read this again, and am on the lookout for the sequel when I have a little extra money to spend!

I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway. This book was pretty great! An quick, fun read that was really well written. I enjoyed the premise of the story with the ancient gods existing in modern times. The main characters, Nix and Cal, were a great couple. The author had their personalities and voices well pegged, which allowed their relationship to feel genuine. The romance in this book was not cheesy and thats usually a deal buster for me with books in this genre. The only thing I would say against this book, is the end felt a bit rushed. Other wise, a great book and I look forward to the sequel!
