This book is an excellent English translation of a work on practical Islamic spirituality from a renowned 17th century (AD) Persian mystic. Fayd Kashani was the son-in-law of the famed Mulla Sadra and is well known as a traditionalist (muhhadith), Quranic commentator (mufassir), and philosopher. He is also famous for his Shi'i recension of Ghazali's Ihya Ulum ad-Deen, titled al-Mahhajat al-Bayda; "Spiritual Mysteries" is considered an abbreviated version of al-Mahhajat. This book will interest both academics and students in the fields of Shi'ism, Safavid Iran and Islamic spirituality/sufism. The book can also be utilized devotionally as an highly accessible manual on the inner dimensions of Islamic worship and spiritual purification (tazkiyat al-nafs) for Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
