Bone

Rate this book

SO... I'm a bit disappointed. I'm a bit disappointed because the premise was GOOD. It was intriguing and a real page turner for me... Up until I realized the way the ONLY woman of this story is described will always, and I mean always, relate to her chest or her burning desire for having sex with the main character.

It did not contribute to the story at all, and frankly those descriptions felt out of place and out of tone. It's a pity because it really ruined the story for me and I especially felt uncomfortable considering the serious and important discussion that this book wanted to put forward regarding homelessness and the system which lets it happen. It felt inappropriate.

I also thought the reveal happened too early and wish I had more time ripping my hair out from not knowing who the murderer was, but that's a personal preference!

Last thing, and the reason why I still give it above average, this book really did leave an impact for me regarding the important topic of misery and how hard it is to survive on the streets and even in what we think might be the solution to it, shelters. I really wish sexual moments would've been abandoned to the profit of more important scenes.

This great mystery follows the tale of a damaged, amnesiac street person as he explores the caves and tunnels under New York City during the police hunt for a psychopathic serial killer. This could certainly be the basis for a good movie!

One truly gains a sense of what it is like to be homeless and psychotic from reading Bone. Yet, it is actually an uplifting story that leaves the reader satisfied.

One of George's non-Mongo books and a wonderful one-off story. I did figure out the ending etc, but it's a great read.

My first book of 2021, and let me tell you, it is going to take a long way or a lot of books I guess to read one that will top "Bone." This writer is simply outstanding, amazing, talented -- need I say more. I could not put the book down. His story telling is beyond reproach. The setting, underground and homeless NYC, back in the late 80's, was exceptional. Characters very believable. Let me hear from other Chesbro readers..........I am hooked!!!!!

What an odd book. Interesting, nonetheless. There are a couple of really unusual style choices. To wit. The sex/romance scenes are written in an entirely different style out of the original voice/flow, which is weird. I guess it just shows the author is not entirely comfortable/skilled with it. The reveal of the killer about 2/3 of the way is contrary to your usual crime canon, which makes for a bit of reader shock. The revelations about the protagonist are entirely new as well, and completely shift his character. Just odd, I guess.

7.6/10.

A very different plot, which I appreciated. I became connected with the man character, and enjoyed the side characters. Twist wasn’t too surprising, but I wanted it to be longer, and was able to visualize it very well in my head. So great book overall :)
