Just like in the first Halo game, now we do the same course but backwards (and drier). The highlights are the encounters with the Rahi Nui, the Energized-Protodermis entity, and the death throes of the vile Karzahni plant. Greg does great stuff here by priming the reader for the coming year of story as all of the Rahi creatures of Metru Nui flee up through the tunnels to safety. What could make such creatures flee? What darkness lurks without as the Toa Metru have been warned of the darkness within? We’ll have to find out next year.

It was a bit lackluster compared to the others in this series. They were travelling through a cave for the whole book, something we had already seen in Adventures #4 or maybe #5, but this time it felt a lot more linear. A lot of enemies were very similar to things we had seen before, which is the main issue in general with this book - it feels like it takes a lot of elements from the previous ones.

But this book still has positive aspects if you like seeing the Toa Metru team again, learn a bit more lore, etc.

the Toa Metru really need to stop going underground it really isn't working out for them. Artakha and Karzahni mentioned(!). Journeying through Makuta's abandoned workshop is a really cool idea and its fittingly creepy, reminds me of Aldia's Keep in Dark Souls 2.

“Oh, yes, I know who you are. I know all my enemies.”

Okay, I think that we can agree that “BIONICLE Adventures” has some of the best writing in the entire BIONICLE series. It’s a shame that after this book, the 2005 Hordika storyline kind of forces Greg to go through some loops to make Vakama’s arc fit what has to happen in the movie.

Still, other than that the dialogue is still fantastic, the characters are memorable and fun, and when he’s not doing major story beats there are really cool monster encounters and conversations that elevate this beyond being a silly action figure tie-in book.

Also yes, Greg is still doing the “This monster doesn’t understand the words, but he understands the tone.” I’m a bit tired of it, and I know it’s not done. It’s also a little weird when it comes to the Rahi Nui, considering that in “Tales of the Masks” the Rahi Nui seems to be able to understand words and recognize voices.

Other than that, I have no real complaints though.

A great, darker tale of the Toa’s return to Metru Nui and their encounter with an insane plant creature deluded into thinking he is Karzahni. The creature attempts to manipulate the Toa into doing his bidding but things do not turn out well for him. The story does a fine job delving into the character of the players and their motivations.
