Very excited to read this.

The first chapter is on Embalming.

"Among the ancient Egyptians, embalming was but one aspect of a life oversaturated with things spiritual and preoccupied with the possible fate of the soul after the body had perished. In the industrial West, there has been an equally universal and all-encompassing preoccupation. It is called desire for profit, and, as will become apparent here, has done much for the spread of the practice of embalming."

I’m almost running out of Gonzalez-Crussi books to read. I gather that this was actually one of his first in order of publication. There is some excellent stuff here, but I admit it’s a little uneven. The first three essays (“On Embalming,” “Twins,” and “Unpeaceful Afterlife”) are as good as anything he’s written, and highly recommended. Some of the later essays (“Reflections on Child Abuse” and “On Male Genital Anatomy,” for example) are weak. I’m not sure FGC had quite hit his stride with this collection.

Fascinating essays by a pathologist on 'monsters', twins, genitals, death, embalming, etc. The writing style is weirdly 1890s, despite being written in the 1980s. This is not a problem, as it is oddly comforting.

A collection of finely crafted and terribly engaging essays on anatomy and pathology from a well-read, contemplative and original mind.

I debated a three for this, but the more I thought about it, the more I enjoyed it. On the surface, the essays seem petulant and snobbish, but on reflection, I decided they were witty and self-depreciating in a flouncy sort of way. It wasn't what I expected when I first picked it up, but it did make me think and I had a few smiles. The style is more akin to something you'd find in a collection of Victorian era essays, but it is eloquent, if sometimes a little repetitive. If you are after a memoir-type book by an anatomist, you won't find that here. If you are after historical and philosophical musings about various anatomy related topics delivered with a dry wit, then yes, read this.
