If some of these comics sound familiar to you, that's probably because Steve and S.D. Perry turned them into novels (The Complete Aliens vs Predator Omnibus). This collects the first four AvP trades plus a few odds and ends.

Aliens Vs. Predator ★★★
Even before the movies, this is the comic that started the whole Aliens vs. Predators phenomena. Dark Horse had both licenses and figured why not. It's what we all wanted to see after seeing the Xenomorph skull on the Predator ship in Predator II.

This follows what has become a pretty standard trope for this franchise. Predators unleash Aliens on what they think is an uninhabited world that humans have colonized since the last time Predators visited. Humans get stuck in the middle and must fight back.

The art is Dark Horse's house style of the 90's. Dark Horse's coloring of the time was terrible. It's a shame Dark Horse didn't decide to recolor these when they collected the stories into omnibuses.

Blood Time ★★
A little story about Predators on the hunt.

Duel ★★★★
A short and sweet followup to the original Aliens Vs. Predator miniseries from Dark Horse. Some colonial marines return to Ryushi where they encounter more than they can handle including the first Xenomorph / Predator hybrid. The star here is Javier Saltares's art. I've been a fan of his since he relaunched Ghost Rider in the early 90s.

War ★★★★
This is the sequel to two different comic book series, the original Aliens Vs. Predator and Aliens: Berserker. Machiko from the original AvP is living with the Predators when she comes across the survivors of Berserker when they land on a planet the Predators are going on a bug hunt on. It's about as fun as you'd expect 90s comics crossing two properties would be.

Eternal ★★
This was a turkey. It was REALLY confusing. The previous AvP comics were all set in the future of the Aliens universe. But visually this seemed to be current day Tokyo. They were still driving around normal cars, fashion was from the 90s, everything about this screamed current day. But when I just read the blurb on Goodreads it mentions this being in the future. Then there's this tech-billionaire who is 700 years old. Nothing about this made any sense. Even Alex Maleev's art was only so-so. It was very sketchy.

Old Secrets ★★★
A quick story from Alex Maleev about some priests who hide a Predator ship behind an old myth.

The Web ★★★★
An f'd up story about the kid from the original AvP survived to get his revenge on the Predators. It's a fun and insane little ditty.

Solid artwork combined with solid storytelling. I remember reading the original AvP in black and white back in Dark Horse Presents. They did an excellent job adding these stories in linear fashion and it managed to make a story out of all of them combined. Eternal's art reminded me of Mignola and Jae Lee while still remaining its own. The ending is just as sad as a collection like this should be.

I can't wait to get my hands on more of these comics! these were awesome, and they supported the omnibus Alien novel I read very well. I really like the angle where Predators and Aliens come from the "same" space and semi-coexist together.

I would love to see the ET's from Promethius brought into it and explained - to me it would be something along the line of; the smart race of ET's have been at war with the predators for unknown eons, both races being incredibly scientifically advanced but the Predators choosing this hunter/pecking order life style over the scholar-is-ness of the ET's (Think Sparta vs Greece), and thus the ET's genetically created the weapon that would become the Aliens. Some kind of segway into humanity and how we got to Aliens being a sporting event for Predators.

Specifically with these comics, I loved the storylines (the art was pretty great but I was kind of hoping for more full page spreads of detail with the Alien) but I did get confused a few times - Would have been nice to have more of the world explained same with the Alien (I love origin stories) and this really operated that you knew all the players in the game already. Everything from the timeline to places ect. was hinged on knowing both franchises fairly well.

This is a fun outing in the Aliens and far more dreadlocked alien hunter named from now on the Predator. It is a collection of comics of which two have been given more flesh on their bones in book form minus the pictures. But still they do not fail to be a hoot and a half.
Nobody likes the alien as their swarm mentality is bug crazy and the Predator is a but too bloody murderous and a hunter, scarily we human resemble these creatures way too much as we enjoy a good hunting to and do not mind a little genocide on some animals, and for some serious dosh you get to shoot some endangered species, often drugged to not be too dangerous. At least these but ugly Bob Marley lookalikes are not afraid of a little danger so they plant alien eggs on unsuspecting worlds and if they happen to be colonized by humans, tough dodo.
Anyhow this collection is an enjoyable bunch and do entertain me a lot. So I hope we get a new Alien or Predator movie soon as they never fail to entertain, or in the case of Ridley Scot wow the bejesus out of me.
Well advised for the alien or Predator fan, they probably have read this lang ago.

After reading this, I can understand why people were upset about the AVP film. If they had adapted the first story on this collection, it could have made for a much better experience. For me I throughly enjoyed the first and last story, but the rest didn't quite capture me. Well worth a look if you are interested in either franchise in my opinion.

The original series and "The Web" are still quite stellar. The rest of the books are a bit uneven or goofy ("Eternal"). Still, it's nice to see some 90s era panels hold up quite well.

Awesome book, except it's not very accurate...
Main plot summary:
The story begins with a few Predators testing for a hunt, and a preview of an Alien Queen and how the Predators seed planets with Alien eggs to create a hunting ritual. A person finds a facehugger and reports to Machiko Noguchi, who gives it to Dr. Mariam Revna to study. Meanwhile, a group of people find an unconscious Predator and bring it back to Dr. Revna, who takes care of him. Then, a kid who's entire family just got hunted down by Predators arrives, and a group of people take him away. The Predators show up near Dr. Revna's lab. One of them tries to kill her, and the one that she was taking care of saves her life. Machiko and Dr. Revna escape by flying away. Dr. Revna's patient, aka Broken Tusk, was outnumbered by Aliens and climbed up a ladder to escape the Rynth stampede. Dr. Revna persuades Machiko to fly over and save him, but an Alien jumps onto a the copter and unbalances it, resulting in a crash that killed Dr. Revna. Afterwards, Machiko and Broken Tusk form an alliance, and after two people died from chestbursters, they went to find the Alien Queen. They trap her under a vehicle and Machiko went to stick a data chip into the ship's computer system so they can escape, but then the Queen wrestled the vehicle off herself and attacked Broken Tusk. Machiko manages to weaken the Queen, and she and Broken Tusk races into the ship. The Queen attempts to attack them, but the door closes and decapitates her in the process. Broken Tusk, who's badly wounded, uses the acidic blood of the Queen to mark Machiko(part of a Predator hunting ritual, if they manage to take down an Alien) as a parting gift. Machiko decides to join the Predators and become part of their clan.
Part 2:
About a year later, the Predators create another hunting planet and begin to kill humans for sport. They capture and Alien Queen on the planet and drags her onto the ship. Machiko, who failed the "join the hunt" test, remains on the ship. She hears about the dying humans and decide to re-join her own species again. She traps the Predators in a room and releases the Queen upon them, who releases her facehuggers on the Predators. Machiko, after making the ship crash in attempt to land, begins to talk with three humans. Then, the Predators arrive and find that Machiko betrayed them. At the same time, the Aliens break free from the ship. Machiko, with the help of 3 people(on in MAX armor), manages to defeat them. Afterwards, she and the three people fly a spaceship towards Earth.

Honestly, the artwork is what brings this title up to a three. While there are some interesting characters in some of the stories (there are 7), many are bound to the Ryushi plot line which I did not care for. By far, my favorite was "Eternal" which features a man using the Xenomorph to lure in the Yautja in order to harvest the blood and organs of the Predators to prolong his life.

To be fair, I am not a fan of the "Yautja seed planets with Xenomorphs to hunt them" concept around which many of the stories are framed. My other main complaints are that the Yautja warriors frequently ignore their honor code, hunting animals, humans, and even children with to respect for the victims' abilities. At other times, they insist on using only bladed weapons, seeming to support the "even playing field" concept. The other main complaint is the almost total lack of the Xenomorph's primary defensive weapon -- the acidic blood. There are dozens if not hundreds of times when one of the characters should have been absolutely destroyed by back spray or gushes of acid directly on their persons. It appears that the writers have forgotten this portion of the backstory.

In short, if you are not a fan of the Alien or Predator franchises, you may well enjoy the stories in this book. There are interesting plots and some interesting concepts get explored (like the human joining the Yautja to hunt -- which unfortunately ends with the character deciding that "meh, I guess I'm a human after all despite the fact that these aliens took me in, fed me, allowed me to hunt with them, and generally treated me like one of their own). However, if you picked this up, it is likely that you ARE a fan of one if not both franchises and you will just end up being disappointed.

How did those two terrible, terrible films get it so wrong with such solid source material to work from? For starters - just the IDEA of aliens vs. predators seems like a can't miss concept. This collection alone has more than enough material for a fistful of films, spread across seven stories, all of which are at the very least good (only 'Eternal' feels like it doesn't really fit but still has some strong ideas) and heavily feature a genuinely great character in Machiko Noguchi.

Noguchi stars in both 'Prey' and 'War' in this collection and her story takes from being a stand-offish civilian administrator to a warrior to a semi-accepted predator (with some really fun stuff about their combative rituals and internal politics) all the way back to human society again, via a LOT of killing.

The artwork is varied and, usually does a good job of showing the action without getting confused or cluttered and there's one Glenn Fabry painting included that might be my favourite rendering of a predator, ever.

Overall, a high quality, meaty, violent omnibus that left me hating the film versions even more than I did before.

I loved Alien Vs. Predator series until it became less about the creatures within and more about interstellar politics and backstabbing over the latest technology based around the titular creatures. We see less and less of the two titans of science fiction horror pitted against each other over time and that is where my review sits. I will say that it is 100% better than Aliens vs. Predator Omnibus, Vol. 2 in which they try to draw you in with Chris Claremont's name on the cover but it is pretty much a waste of $$$

This has the same issue as the regular Predator comics in the sense that this doesn't expand on the lore in any interesting way. The best this can muster is an update of the old "noble savage" trope. Still, these have Aliens vs. Predators in every comic so I can't say I left disappointed. Plus all of the various artists in this were able to draw the Predator correctly, which is more than can be said about the actual Predator comics themselves.

I really liked this first omnibus. There are several stories that play off of the first story in the omnibus which I really liked. There’s one shot stories in between the multi issue stories. All and all a great collection with some fun art. It’s aged well and I see myself returning to it in the future.

I enjoyed this omnibus even better than the novelizations. Illustrations are gorgeous and gory, and I think it does a better job explaining why Noguchi makes the assumptions she’s does about the predators. It’s not perfect but it’s infinitely better than what any of the movie studios have offered fans of the franchise.

The incompetent Dark Horse so-called Omnibus format is pathetic, the stories were actually amazing, filled with strong characters and some beautiful artwork, however for fans of these 2 franchises it's best to wait for Marvel to release a better version for an actual Aliens vs Predator Omnibus, this is lacking stories, size is smaller than usually comics.

The quality of the individual works can be all over the place in collections like this, but Randy Stradley's original mini-series and "Eternal" make this worth the read.

This anthology is a mixed bag of AvP comics. Like most AvP media, it lies out of canon and creates it's own. Fun for fans, but you won't find a lot of substance here.

Feels like watching a big, dumb, colorful Saturday morning cartoon, but with tons of ultra-violence. I thought this was fun, but it doesn't offer much more than pulpy thrills.

I loved this, several ones I had already read, but I loved looking at the art style. It was really cool, and to compare it to omnibus 4 and see the different era of comic art was really cool. There was several little, in between stories I hadn't read before and I like that they gave layers to the other stories.
I loved Eternal story, adding something we the human would want and hunt from the Predators was a brilliant idea.
I also love The Web in black and white comic style, so it's illustrations are beautiful and whimsical.
I liked that Old Secret touched onto our religion and how the predator/aliens may have effected us and our tales.

Two horror icons collide in Dark Horse's Aliens vs Predator, a meeting of monsters that has survived as a pop culture institution, seeing itself two movies and a ton more comic sequels. This Omnibus presents the series from its humble beginnings, and through a fair amount of follow-up content, including the full-fledged "sequel," AVP: War.

First up, it should be noted that, while expansive, this collection varies wildly in quality. The first story, the original AVP, has the makings of a classic, but after some explosive later entries, it feels quite dialed back in terms of scope and intent. The art is quite subdued. Four-colour printing is not suited to horror comics - a lovely wash of black inks, strong shadows and dark/light contrast could have made the series feel truly threatening... instead, the sleepy, somewhat dull colour process used makes the whole thing seem quite flat.

The story is a classic, though, so I can't complain too much. Predators seed a planet with Alien eggs and then descend upon it in a ritualistic hunt. It connects with the best part of both the Alien and Predator franchises, and it's a crossover that makes a hell of a lot of sense. With a human colony caught in the middle, and an Alien Queen spitting out Aliens at an unprecedented rate, it's presented as a "whoever wins, we lose" scenario, and it's effective as hell.

AVP War continues the story in a way I felt was forced and contrived. As a fan of the Xenomorphs, the focus shift to being about actual Predators and their culture, instead of merely about humans trapped in the middle, was a disappointment. The rest of the book goes on with a sort of tepid inevitability, with some later chapters set on Earth, and a lovely vignette about the Xenomorphs as ancient religious icons, offering few glimmers of brilliance among dated sci-fi horror.

As is often the case, the Dark Horse omnibus is worth owning. It's a great collection of stories for a great price. It's just the misses outnumber the hits, which often makes reading it more of a slog than a joy. Still, if you love Aliens or Predator or both (and why wouldn't you), you could do much, much worse.

There have been two godawful films based on the premise of Aliens vs Predator. This collection, featuring stories that predate the movies, shows that comic book creators have a lot more talent than some filmmakers.

Lots of violent action featuring everyone's favourite monsters - same old themes of man's back-stabbing, only-for-the-money evil vs the aliens/ Predators, who are, at least, just doing what they do.

This collection features the first 4 issue series that Dark Horse put out, and its still a corker. The sequel's not quite as good, but there are 3 short stories showcasing some great artwork and the third mini-series ("Eternal") is a more original take on the franchise.

All in all, great fun - to be honest, I would have given it 3 stars (good but not exceptional) if it wasn't such a great reminder that the movies were just so damn bad but didn't need to be.

Sweet! I've been wanting to read these since I was a kid but never could afford them. I thought after having already seen the sequel films that I wouldn't enjoy reading the mythology as much but I'm pleasantly surprised at how each book got progressively more exciting. I especially love how the outcast storyline played out. She was a REALLY good female protagonist and I've come to expect that from this material. I'll continue to invest more interest into these books now that the art has caught up to content. Great stuff!
