It's an okay book, the prints are printed really well but the format of the book doesn't really help them shine like they should. The pages are too small and the binding of the book means that a lot of the images get lost in the centre of the book. If the book was twice the size the images could fit in the centre of the page with a nice border hut as it stands they appear far too small.
As for the writing it's all pretty casual and at times the translations and context given can feel clunky and overly casual. All the information about the pieces in terms of their size and when they were created is relegated to the back of the book which is cumbersome.
I feel these prints, whilst sometimes humorous in tone deserve a more detailed and serious write up.
"For like-minded folks who need only a cat to be happy" i really love this book with my life, not only its content combine art and daily life (with cats!) it also have tales of the period. The drawings and paintings of the cats it's really beautiful and stunning.
Delightful read with lots of beautiful Ukiyo-e prints of cats. I learned a lot about Kuniyoshi and was very amused at all of his enigmatic and expressionful cat illustrations. He is definitely on my list of top ten artists now.
A gorgeous gorgeous book with and about Kuniyoshi's illustrations and cats in Japanese art in general. Text both in Japanese and English. Again - absolutely gorgeous.
