A collection of writings, from the early to late-20th century, by people who have lived or were born in Hawaii and are of Chinese heritage. The honesty, poignancy, purity and simple down-to-earthness that they communicate, the freshness with which they are written, from short stories to theatre plays to poems, sticks with you.
No posing, not striving, no mission to further or cause to extol, just—and thankfully so—stories of childhood, of love, of perseverance, happiness and sorrow, of life, what.
I never expected to be moved so much by a compilation of what is (mostly) amateur stories. A good reminder of how transient are our names.
I think it'd love this collection more if there were less mini plays in it. however, I loved the short stories and poetry. but that is a personal preference. I refer plays that would take at least an hour to reform instead of 5-20 pages.
