The conclusion to the groundbreaking Level 26 trilogy, a series of edgy, unconventional thrillers about an FBI operative tasked with the ultimate search-and-destroy mission: to take down the world's most dangerous serial killers.
Anthony E. Zuiker's Level 26 novels have blazed a highly successful interactive trail, with a groundbreaking cross-platform combination of novel, Web site, and hi-def video: There are more than 100,000 registered users on Level26.com, all of them eager to see what happens next. And for the finale to his trilogy, Zuiker has outdone himself.
In Dark Revelations, Steve Dark faces the most intricate, intense, and explosive case of his career. The killer calls himself Labyrinth, and the riddles, puzzles, and wordplay with which he announces his new targets have caused a worldwide media sensation. The case has already claimed a number of high-profile individuals as victims-not to mention several government agencies, which have tried and failed to stop a growing global panic. But what point is Labyrinth trying to make? Who will be his next victim? It's up to Dark to assemble a team from among the smoking rubble of the international crime solving community, find Labyrinth wherever he may be, and put a stop to the mayhem, once and for all.
Can Steve Dark solve the biggest riddle of them all? Only time will tell.
Anthony Edward Zuiker is the creator and executive producer of the American television show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. He produced all three editions of the CSI franchise: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: Miami and CSI: NY. Besides his work on CSI, he also founded the murder mystery show Whodunnit?. He also assisted in the writing of Terminator Salvation. He is currently involved in Blackbox TV, a YouTube series and is the executive producer and writer of the web series Cybergeddon.
On September 8, 2009, Zuiker released Level 26: Dark Origins, a book with associated web-based motion picture and interactive elements which he termed a "digi-novel". Zuiker produced 20 cinematic cyber-bridges, which readers are prompted to view online using special codes embedded in the book's text every 20 pages or so.
On October 14, 2010, Level 26: Dark Prophecy was released and the third installment, Level 26: Dark Revelations was released in 2011.
With each book in the Level 26 series since Dark Origins (#1), the polish seems to wear off. Each subsequent installment feels more rushed and less plausible than its predecessor.
In Dark Revelations, series protagonist Steve Dark, famous for his uncanny ability to hunt down the worlds worst serial killers and bring them to justice or wipe them off the face of the earth somehow manages to piece together answers to each twisted puzzle seemingly out of thin air and has his new team (the cheesy-named Global Alliance) traversing the globe to thwart the killers evil plan. There's no depth to the storytelling with a mere glossing over of detail and little more than a passing thought given to character development. The book reads like it was made for a high octane crime episode of some sort rather than a novel.
I didn't watch all the cut scenes online but those I did, particularly the last one, added something a little extra to the story - which was much needed.
Whilst I like to look for the positives in books I read, aside from a couple of interesting characters who read like cardboard cutouts with potential, there was little to keep me interested other than finding out Labyrinth's identity, which in the end, too, felt kinda cheesy.
If you've read Dark Origins and Dark Prophecy chances are you're going to want to give this one a shot, having read it, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it.
Dark Revelations is an average read at best. 2/5 stars.
This was a good wrap up for this trilogy. Not a bad series but the second and third book wasn't as good as the first. Nice to see the MC could do both his job and be a father. Another good serial killer series.
The final book. And this story did not dissapointed. Now we know who is behind Global Alliance and they want Dark. I find the plot very well developed and the scenes very good but with a lot of fiction and imagination too!!!!!!!!!!
Now Dark is after Labyrinth a person who is making bad people in example and the same time trying to rebuild the world. Everything was planned and how can they stop this madness. Secrects we had, secrects we did not tell. The vilan and his actions scared me a bit and of course their pupe was always Dark. Besides that we have Riggins old and exaust it. Riggins as a mentor of Dark wis very inteligent but we did not see much. And some characters are forgotten as Constance and Lisa, not that they add something.
Dark is cold and a bastard. I did not agree with his actions specially towards Constance yeah I dislike her and the first book but they should have at least some final talk. Dark was like some Don Juan 'cause the guy get laid a lot. WTH and about Detectives and his hotness han? He is selfish too to left his daughter at least he gets some sense and is leaving her now.
We finally know tha Sweqell was his brother and I still don't agree with the death of Sibby the wife. She was his pillar and he will never had a good relationship with any woman, just saying.
Steve Dark would never have thought that his career hunting Level 26 killers and his role as a father could coexist. Indeed, it had taken Dark a long time to know he could do both. But now there is something worse than a Level 26 killer out there, Labyrinth is out there, and Steve Dark’s next job might be the most important job a father ever had.
Dark Revelations will have you racing through a suspenseful maze of twists and turns, told in the first-person narrative by both Dark and Labyrinth. Every twist foretold with a riddle and a clue, every turn with a deadline. Every deadline counted down with lethal anticipation, until the very last second. Faster and faster, deeper and deeper, into the maze, until the final turn, until Labyrinth’s final gift to the world.
Only a team of the very best can hope to stop Labyrinth. It will take a team with brains, brawn, beauty, and unlimited resources - weapons, money, computers, and access. And this team will need a man-hunter, the best of the best, someone with experience catching Level 26 killers – someone like Steve Dark.
But even with Steve Dark on the team, will they be able to stop Labyrinth before it is too late, or is it already too late?
Dark Revelations will be released on December 29, 2011.
Better not hesitate, or you’ll never find your way out of the labyrinth.
I can't believe I'm putting myself through book three – book one was bad and book two was worse (how was that possible?), but I still want to know how it gets resolved...
****
So, that's done. I'm a little surprised it was the best book in the series, if only because it contains the fewest errors. The plot's still outlandishly ridiculous, the writing's still overdone (subtlety and nuance are conspicuous in their absence) and the characters are still one dimensional, but by golly the story rips along. Will our heroes solve the puzzles before time runs out? Of course not! Will it take until the evil-doer's pièce de résistance to find and stop him? Of course! Will you have worked out whodunnit well before then? Almost certainly. Will you care? Nah. This ain't Booker-prize-winning material – just go along for the ride.
Oh, I didn't watch any of the cyber-bridges except the last one. They didn't add anything to the first book, so I didn't bother with books 2 and 3. You may feel differently about them.
This is the third and final installment of the Level 26 series featuring Steve Dark. I was a bit let down by part two's villain, but this one is back to what I liked about book one. I liked the character of Labyrinth more than TCK from book two. Mainly because, like Sqweegel, you get to know the killer's POV and the Cyber Bridges also include him and aren't just about Dark's tortured existence.
But much like book two it's testing my gullibility. I mean, first they tell us that the most notorious serial kilers in history aren't 'that bad', they are 'only' level 20. So then we get to know Sqweegel who is a top tier level 26 killer. Then we get to know TCK in book two, who was too outrageous for me, considering the killings they've done. And now Labyrinth (I guess The Riddler was already taken) and Dark's new employer who says that Sqweegel isn't 'the worst'. But they never really establish why this new character is level 26 and why Dark should hunt him down. It's kind of explained in the revelation at the end, but I think if you'd make a book called Level 26 and focus on a villain, then I'd say focus on the damn villain. Instead they're digging in Dark's private life, all to make him look more cool, plagued, tormented, darker by topping mystery and tragedy upon one another over and over.
But overall it's an easy read and a thrilling story, and if you tend not to overthink stuff like I do you'd probably enjoy the story more.
Loved this series. Yes the proofreading could have been better but I don't let that spoil a book for me. I had an idea of who the murderer was about half way through but I still enjoyed how it all unfolded. We learn even more about Steve Dark and how he adapts to his "calling". So glad I read these books.
Great book. In addition to reading the book, you are also able to go online and after keying in a code that is given at the end of some of the chapters you can watch a digital cyberbridge. Make sure you read the first two books in the Level 26 series, Dark Origins and Dark Prophecy.
Dark Revelations, the third book in the Steve Dark series, is an entertaining thriller akin to an episode of Zuuker’s CSI. I read this series years ago and wanted to reread the books before giving them away. I vaguely remember being dissatisfied with this book at the time and I find that the same is true now. I will keep this review free of spoilers for this book, but there may be spoilers for the prior entries: Dark Origins, and Dark Prophecy.
The premise of the series is interesting, following the manhunter that takes on serial killers that surpass the abilities and acumen of any recorded killer to date. It suggests blockbuster thriller, with a side of crime drama. While that is delivered here, it’s hard to ignore some baffling leaps in logic and plot contrivances, even from the very beginning. I really enjoyed Dark Prophecy because I felt like it was the book that really epitomized the concept of Steve Dark entering the mind of the killer and getting ahead of them. It presents like he’s troubleshooting problems in a car or computer, where he’s able to open the hood up and follow their line of logic. This book, however, spends little time until the very end trying to think like the killer. What Zuiker does instead is put, very transparently, his grievances with the world.
The killer in this book targets pillars of the global community (entertainment, oil, economy, etc.). The straw men invented to represent these pillars range from reasonable to caricature, to not even mentioned in some cases. It was distracting both in how flimsy they were, and how America-centric a lot of these “global institutions” ended up being. If I was to give Zuiker credit I’d say it was smart making the lunatic rave about a global revolution, only to focus on issues with the United States (like healthcare), but then he invents tweets or youtube comments to represent the public reacting to the events, and copycat actors and protests inspired by the killer. Maybe I’m the cynic, but I find it hard to believe.
I have to cover the video tie-ins. I find them wholly unnecessary in this book. Again, Dark Prophecy does the best for using the video medium, using the tarot reading to provide some additional insight into the meaning behind the cards, and tells a little about Dark’s life. This book’s tie-ins feel like a monumental missed opportunity. The killer in this book releases videos online after every event, which to me seems like the perfect thing to be the video tie in. Instead we get weird behind the scenes with the killer, which don’t amount to much anyway, since there are chapters in the book from their point of view. Further, at one point the events written in the book and the video tie in are the same series, but are portrayed differently. Again, spoiler free, but it was incredibly distracting when I literally *just* read what happened, and then it’s immediately shown to be a false retelling. Also worth mentioning is this happening on the same page, when Dark says something to a character, and then the next chapter from their POV has the same interaction but with the wrong dialogue. Also also, idioms being used improperly (I dont have the book in front of me anymore but it has to do with “no stone unturned” being used backwards)?? Just sloppy writing/editing.
In summation, Dark Prophecy is a good blockbuster brain-off thriller. I enjoyed some of the set ups, and the elaborate, self-described “rube-goldberg” crimes, but ultimately this book is a soap opera disguised as a thriller. Two stars for poor execution and sloppy writing.
To kdysi znamenalo v roce 1804.
In Dark Revelations Steve Dark joins a new team, Global Alliance. They have the funds and the connections that will allow Steve to do what he does best.. and that’s stop the worst of the worst..
Steve’s newest target is Labyrinth.. but the hunt is going to take him on a collision course with his old team, Riggins and Constance. They don’t understand why he’s left them behind.. and I think Steve just doesn’t care at this stage.. he’s a one man band.. he doesn’t want a team.. something Global Alliance will find out shortly..the team doesn’t exactly gel.
Labyrinth was a very interesting villain.. he’s got secrets that he’s willing to spill..I was conflicted if I’m honest.. his actions are despicable but he’s trying to right the world.. and that’s something I can get onboard with.
It’s been a very interesting series, and this book read as a standalone is pretty decent but if you compare to the 1st instalment it’s lost a little shine.. the original team..the red tape.. the realism.. that’s what hooked me in. Don’t get me wrong the plot was still really engaging and the added cut scenes you can access online really give it an extra punch but I felt we lost a little of the Steve Dark I loved.
I wish we had more time to see the team connections within Global Alliance and really would have loved to see Riggins and Constance join forces with Steve’s new team properly..
Overall a very interesting series that I’m glad I took the time to read. Shame there isn’t more.
Enjoyable! A breezy read. Played out like an action film, rather than a crime thriller, but that didn't spoil the fun. That being said, I have some complaints.
Weren't many chances to play along with the protagonists in figuring things out--most dilemmas were solved for you immediately with no explanation, other than "gut feeling" and you had to just ride along until one of the characters finally quit beating around the bush and gave some context to whatever brash decision they made two chapters ago.
And the characters were painfully cliched: we had the mysterious benefactor whose endless well of money and power are never really touched on for convenience sake, the comedic tech whiz, the stoic and muscly weapons expert, and the unrealistically hot token girl of the group who is built up as powerful but really is just there to have a crush on the brooding main character despite absolutely zero relationship development.
The story really pulled you in though--it capitalizes well on human tendency to rubber neck. Right at the start it grabs you by your morbidly curious neck and pulls you along in that grip all the way to the end. I appreciate it.
I really enjoyed all 3 books in this series, wish there were more! This book actually provoked more thought with regards to the killers agenda...if only the world's issues could be so easily discussed. For anyone like me who is reading these many years later the level26.com videos are available on YouTube with the exception of the very first 2 from origins book I believe.
Finally I've completed the trilogy. Well it was a good ending. Even though among the trilogy, I very much prefer the first one cause it gives me creeps.
Kudos to the author for the fascinating trilogy. It took me longer to complete the third book unlike the 1st and 2nd. Nevertheless it has been a fruitful journey on Level 26.
I consider this the best out of the series. Maybe it's the timing of when I read it (June 2020) or just the general idea of Labyrinth and his reasonings, but the book makes you think a lot and stays with you even afterwards.
