It took an entire calendar year but I read the Holy Bible in its entirety - all 1609 pages of it in the NIV version that I was using. I was pleasantly surprised that more of the Bible was familiar than I would have guessed - although some portions were read, in part, literally decades ago. I used "The Read Through the Bible in a Year Map guidebook written by Barbour Publishing. It divided the task into 3 daily readings - the Old Testament in order (minus Psalms and Proverbs) / the New Testament in order / with the 3rd reading being Psalms and then Proverbs in order. It took about 15-20 minutes a day for 365 days.
I must confess that several of the books in the Old Testament, especially; I don't ever recall reading before - especially the minor prophets later in the OT. It put my life of 73 years in perspective - sin and broken promises to God by Israel and Judah / words of wisdom in Psalms and Proverbs / and salvation through Christ's death and resurrection. It was a big project to wade through but I would recommend it for anyone.
lol yes I’m including this in my 2024 reading challenge. thank you YouVersion Bible in a Year plan for helping me stay somewhat on track. also liked how they broke it up bc i could often see OT/NT correlations in the same reading week
Here are the book of the bible that I've read, in order of how much I enjoyed, and somewhat believed, them. Also, verses which explain why I determined that I am not christian and didn't not finish this. Basicaly this is sexist, ableist and speciest crap!
John (new testament) Acts (new) Matthew (new): 11:4-5 And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. - Why do the blind have to be able to see, the lame have to be able to walk, and the deaf have to be able to hear? Also, raising the dead seems like a bad idea. 15:29-31 Jesus went on from there and walked beside the Sea of Galilee. And he went up on the mountain and sat down there. And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them, so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel. - Do they have to be able too? Luke (new): 1:20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.” - If you're mute, you're being punished. 12:7 Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. - Humans, are not that much better then sparrows, or superior to sparrows at all. 14:12-14 He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” - The crippled, lame and blind are not completely useless. They might be able to repay you. The poor might too, but probably only with actions. Mark (new): 2:4-12 And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. But there was certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts? Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house. And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion. - Someone who can't walk must be full of sin, and must be healed of it. 5:11-13 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea. -What did those Swine do to deserve that? Nothing. Genesis (old testament): 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. - Humans are not superior to everyone or everything else. 19:8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof. - Are you sending your daughters out to be assaulted? What? Are you just doing it to protect your male guest? Leviticus (old) Numbers (old): 14:17 The Lord is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation. - The child must suffer the sins of the parents, even though it's the parents that were sinful and not the children. 31:7-18 And they warred against the Midianites, as the Lord commanded Moses; and they slew all the males. And they slew the kings of Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword. And the children of Israel took all the women of Midian captives, and their little ones, and took the spoil of all their cattle, and all their flocks, and all their goods. And they burnt all their cities wherein they dwelt, and all their goodly castles, with fire. And they took all the spoil, and all the prey, both of men and of beasts. And they brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, unto Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and unto the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by Jordan near Jericho. And Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them without the camp. And Moses was wroth with the officers of the host, with the captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which came from the battle. And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive? Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the Lord in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord. Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. - Be evil, an commit sins upon other nations, because you are better then them. Exodus (old): 21:7-8 And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do. If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her. - Women may be sold, like slaves. Joshua (old): 1.5 Deuteronomy (old): 1 5:9 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, - The children didn't do anything. If anything, the children in these situations are likely victims of criminal parents. 20:10-15 When thou comest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it. And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee. And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it: And when the Lord thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the Lord thy God hath given thee. Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations. - Everyone who is not of these nations is a piece of shit. 21:10-13 When thou goest forth to war against thine enemies, and the Lord thy God hath delivered them into thine hands, and thou hast taken them captive, And seest among the captives a beautiful woman, and hast a desire unto her, that thou wouldest have her to thy wife; hen thou shalt bring her home to thine house, and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails; And she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thine house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month: and after that thou shalt go in unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife. - Take a women captive and force her to be your wife. It's okay. Go ahead. 28:28 The Lord shall smite thee with madness, and blindness, and confusion of mind, - Disability is used as a punishment, take that all disabled people. Judges (old): did not finish 5:30 Have they not sped? have they not divided the prey; to every man a damsel or two; to Sisera a prey of divers colours, a prey of divers colours of needlework, of divers colours of needlework on both sides, meet for the necks of them that take the spoil? - Are women considered prey, who must be divided for every man?
I did most of my reading using the YouVersion Bible app, combined with the Dwell audio Bible. I followed the Bible Recap chronological plan (theBiblerecap.com). This plan incorporates a book summary from The Bible Project whenever a new book is started, and includes a daily review/summary by Tara-Leigh Cobble which greatly helps with understanding of the chapters you read each day. I highly recommend. I’ll be restarting this same plan for 2026. I may choose a different Bible translation to further enhance understanding.
I have read parts of the Bible since I was a child, but I have never read the entire Bible cover to cover. This was something I promised myself I would do. Reading it was not only eye opening to things I’ve never studied or knew about, but it kept me level headed. I read scripture everyday, but putting a plan in place gave me peace and keeps me on the right track!
I challenge myself each year to read through the Bible using a daily reading plan. It is definitely the Living Word of God because I am given more depth of knowledge and insight every single time I read it!
