Die Serapionsbrüder #7

The Mines of Falun

Rate this book
This early work by E. T. A. Hoffmann was originally published in 1819. Born in K nigsberg, East Prussia in 1776, Hoffmann's family were all jurists, and during his youth he was initially encouraged to pursue a career in law. However, in his late teens Hoffman became increasingly interested in literature and philosophy, and spent much of his time reading German classicists and attending lectures by, amongst others, Immanuel Kant. Hoffman went on to produce a great range of both literary and musical works. Probably Hoffman's most well-known story, produced in 1816, is 'The Nutcracker and the Mouse King', due to the fact that - some seventy-six years later - it inspired Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker. In the same vein, his story 'The Sandman' provided both the inspiration for L o Delibes's ballet Copp lia, and the basis for a highly influential essay by Sigmund Freud, called 'The Uncanny'. (Indeed, Freud referred to Hoffman as the "unrivalled master of the uncanny in literature.") Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann, better known by his pen name E. T. A. Hoffmann (Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann), was a German Romantic author of fantasy and horror, a jurist, composer, music critic, draftsman and caricaturist. His stories form the basis of Jacques Offenbach's famous opera The Tales of Hoffmann, in which Hoffman appears (heavily fictionalized) as the hero. He is also the author of the novella The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, on which the famous ballet The Nutcracker is based. The ballet Coppélia is based on two other stories that Hoffmann wrote, while Schumann's Kreisleriana is based on Hoffmann's character Johannes Kreisler.

Hoffmann's stories were very influential during the 19th century, and he is one of the major authors of the Romantic movement.

For my class on German romanticism.

Throughout my time as a Germanic Studies major, E.T.A. Hoffman has been mentioned quite frequently. I still haven't read his most famous work: The Sandman, but I thought that this was a very interesting story. There seems to be a natural, primitive connection that humanity has towards nature. Our relationship with nature is complicated, which the story itself shows (Elis, the main character, often describes the environments he is in (the sea and the mines) in a negative way, yet he is drawn to them). Our fears of nature do not stop us from going into nature or trying to gain/find something in nature, often to our detriment b/c we are trying to conquer nature (consciously or subconsciously) rather than working along with or taking care of nature.

This might me my favorite piece of Hoffmann so far. In there I found this irresistible beauty of language and metophors. I feel like I am down there in the mines with Elis, like some part is still there after reading, the metal taste stays after reading. It reminds me of Heart of darkness by Joseph Konrad "Das Grauen, das Grauen." This inner fear, being haunted by something, or maybe just by yourself - your inner core fighting yourself. Definately a piece worth reading.

Overall, a pretty middle-of-the-road classic short story. The description of Elis' dream was beautiful and I wish the story explored more of that world, but I understand why it didn't as that wasn't the focus of the tale

Much like The Sandman by Hoffman, A man becomes infatuated with a woman where they subsequently fall into madness.

So much depth for such a short story.

Hoffmann had quite an eerie writing style, that sometimes can feel bizarre and fantastical, and other times haunting and horrifying.

It all feels so far from reality and otherworldly that the reading experience itself almost feels like an uncanny dream, or “nightmarish”.

Having read this book and The Sandman, Hoffman’s characters seem to be driven to destruction, then a fatal death, and the potential reasons for this are intriguing.

‘there arose from the ground like rippling waves strange flowers and plants of flashing metal whose blossoms and leaves climbed upwards from the profoundest depths and twined themselves about one another… countless lovely maidens embracing one another with white shining arms; it was from their hearts that the roots, the flowers and plants shot up…’

what beautiful imagery! what a heart breaking story!

He was haunted and tortured by the thought that one of the workmen would suddenly assume gigantic proportions, and to his horror he would recognize in him Torbern, come to remind him, in a terrible manner, of the subterranean realm of gems and metals to which he had devoted himself.

A heartbreaking, maudlin, and visceral story. I normally don't like drama and melancholy but this concise and quick read of a Romance is sure to warm the coldest of hearts.

kind of boring, not a lot of „horror“ and more of a sad love story that was ruined by insanity and the hunger for riches.
