Story about a maniac who kidnaps a pretty journalist (Sharon Martin) and a young boy (Neil Peterson, son of the man Sharon is dating) and hides them in an old, isolated room underneath Grand Central Station. Also, a young man is facing the electric chair for a crime he may not have committed. Are these two cases connected?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was a fast-paced and exciting read with many characters points-of-view and tense situations. I had a hard time putting this book down. Another very entertaining read by Mary Higgins Clark.

End of the year re-reading, as I try to catch up on current book-ish tasks. What a nice surprise, I enjoyed this a much this time as when I originally read it, way back when.

A Stranger is Watching is a very simple story, but the killer here is not given God like status. He needs to work hard so as to avoid being brought in by the New York police. Eventually bad luck, plus some hard work on behalf of those people on the angels' side, literally catch up with him.
I think that the author will never kill a main character, unless the latter has died in the past, viewed via flashbacks. It's kind of understandable, it makes sense. The blow of death is softened, because the death happened to someone who isn't as known by the readers as the living characters in the present.
Formulaic though the structure of the book is, it's a winning formula. Mary Higgins Clark must have exhausted every permutation throughout her career before her readers said enough was enough. Before, i.e, fatigue set in. The author experienced a lofty position, and I'm glad that she is not as forgotten as say, Harold Robbins.
I myself want more, even if it is of the same. I need the simple sustenance, and I am certain that I will not ditch most of her books. That is a boon. To purchase an ebook and not finishing it is so wasteful. I like Clark's books, so far. I like to follow the coincidences, the poetic justice, the alibis, the plotting, the piety, the good vs evil, the battle of wits, the race against time. This book has got all of that and some more.

The problem with a Mary Higgins Clark book is the reason why she is so popular--once you start, you cannot stop reading it--everything else gets put on hold. This book is no exception.

This book is a thriller book. It is an early book in this author's long, illustrious career. In this one Steve's wife was murdered years ago and Steve is a proponent of the death penalty. His present love interest is against it. That dreadful night is coming back to haunt both of them and Steve's son.
Like I said this was early on in this author's career and you can tell. The writing was not exactly polished up to her usual standard fare. Some character's ran into each other and it seems like at times we were jumping from one scene to another without the logical steps of progression. That being said I was enjoying the premise of the novel. I also liked the idea of two people on different sides of an argument being able to have a relationship. The thriller aspect that makes my blood pump was not really there until the finale. The finale was fantastic and that would easily get a five star rating. I could not read fast enough as I wondered if the heroes would be able to stop the evil acts in time. For the majority of this book I was going to give this a three star rating. The finale bumped it up for me.
This was not the best offering from this author in her long career. It was still a nice read and I enjoyed my time with it even with its minor flaws. If the author wrote this later on in her career I believe it would have easily been a better book. It had what I am looking for in a thriller genre novel. The battle between good and evil and a countdown of the clock to stop the evil acts from the villain.

When I first read this, I started and then forgot to stop. What it lacks in some qualities it makes up for with the fact that there is no right place to take a break and put it down. I started it one school night and had to stay up until three to finish it. Don't tell my parents.

خليفة أجاثا كريستي؟؟.. بل أشد، تملك موهبة رائعة، أجاثا رواياتها رتيبة، قليلة الشخصيات، إلا من إثنتين أو ثلاث كمحور الأحداث، أما مارك كلارك فتنتقل من مشهد إلى آخر كأحداث فيلم سينمائي مثير، لا تُنهي مشهد دون أن يحتوي على الإثارة في آخر سطوره.
أجاثا تفتعل الجريمة وتختم بكشف المجرم، أما ماري فتخبرك بالجريمة وتعرفك على القاتل من أولى الصفحات، فلا تمل من التكملة لمعرفة كامل الحكاية.
رون، شاب متهور وبدأ في العودة لاتزانه، جريمة افتعلها بغير وعي جعلته المشتبه الوحيد في قتل نينا، يراقب القاتل الحقيقي محاولات إلغاء الصحفية شارون حكم الاعدام بالكرسي الكهربائي عن مراهق لم يبلغ سن الرشد، وتمسك ستيف بتحقيق العدالة راحة لزوجته المقتولة منذ عامين.
يختطف القاتل الحقيقي، ابن نينا وحبيبة ستيف.. الصحفية شارون، وتبدأ دوامة الشكوك، الحيرة، قلة الحيلة، القلق، والذعر، طفل يعاني الربو، تداهمه الكوابيس عن مشهد قتل والدته الذي رأه بأم عينه، مع رجل مختل عقليًا، يتخذ القتل هواية، واسم "الثعلب" لقبًا لمكره ودهاءه الشديدين.

Mary Higgins Clark pretty much never disappoints. I was actually surprised to find that this was originally published in 1977. It was only when I found myself asking why the characters were using payphones rather than cell phones that I looked up the publication date.
A good, fast-paced mystery. I picked it up off my shelves of books I pick up at thrift stores for $0.25-$0.50 while trying to decide what to read next, knowing it would only take me a day or two to finish. It was an engrossing story that kept me on the edge of my seat.
A masterpiece of literature it isn't, but a damn good read it is.

رواية مشوقة أعجبتني و أنهيتها في يوم واحد !
قاتل متسلسل يتربص بالجميلات و يقتلهن ، آخر ضحاياه السيدة ونينا بيترسون زوجة رئيس التحرير المشهور و الناجح جدا و التي قتلت في منزلها و على مرأى من طفلها . ولم يعرف الجاني الحقيقي بعد ذالك !
قبض على شاب آخر بريئ و حكم عليه بالإعدام و السفاح عاد مرة أخرى ليختطف الطفل و حبيبة أبيه الجديدة !
وعندما وصلت أحداث القصة لمشكلة إختطاف الطفل دفعت بي لدهاليز عميقة من الغموض والتفكير و الإثارة والخوف على الصغير وهل سيتم إنقاذ كليهما أم لا، رواية مشوقة جدا جعلتني بأسلوبها أخاف حقا على الطفل حقا و أفكر جليا بأحاسيس الوالدين عند إختطاف أبناءهم من الترقب .. الخوف .. الفدية ..عذاب .. تأنيب ضمير .. توبيخ الذات و غيرها الكثير من الأحاسيس القاتلة التي لا أتمنى أن يحسها أي أب أو أم
حفظ الله أبناءنا من كل شر ومن كل سوء

The State of Connecticut is two days away from executing Ronald Thompson for the murder of Nina Peterson. (Although true when the book was written in 1977, the execution of minors at the time of the crime was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2005 and the state of Connecticut has banned executions in 2012).
For Nina’s husband Steve, justice is about to be served. However, when his girlfriend Sharon and young son Niel are kidnapped for ransom, evidence emerges that points to Thompson’s innocence while a serial killer is about to strike again.
The plot, although simplistic, is somewhat disjointed and illogical at times. For example, we are told Niel identified the kidnapper as his mother’s murderer; yet we are also told the kid could not see the murderer because of the lighting. Also, if you are going to plant a bomb, why tip off the authorities when he had easier means of killing Sharon and Niel? For that matter, why go back to the spot where your own bomb is seconds away from detonation?
Overall, I give this one a 3/5. It is average and would not stand out in a stack of 500 books.

ينتظر ستيف بيترسون زوج نينا العدالة بفارغ الصبر بل ويقاتل من أجل إعادة تطبيق عقوبة الإعدام لكل قاتل متوحش، حتى بعد أن وقع في غرام الصحفية الحقوقية شارون التي تحارب من أجل إلغاء هذه العقوبة، فهما مرتبطين ولكن لكل واحد وجهة نظره التي يسعى لتحقيقها.

A Stranger is Watching
I have to admit that this is the first book I have ever read a book by this famous author. I love mysteries so I don't know how I have missed such a classic writer. I am only reading it because it was left in a holiday apartment I am renting.
I could not put this book down. It is fast paced, you feel empathy for all the characters as Clark, brings them all to life with their tales from the past and heart wrenching stories. I could visualise Grand Central Station, from the graphic details. Clark is now on my radar and I look forward to reading more of her books.

First, I’m setting the read date for 2021 because I clearly missed my goal for this year and ended up forgetting to log books as well.
Second, this was the first book I managed to finish in French, I believe because of the simplistic writing style and the high level of suspense.
By the end, I started reading much faster in anticipation.
And third, of course the old homeless woman had to die. Since the story couldn’t be perfect and someone “needed” to die, evidently the most “insignificant” character was chosen, which more than annoys me.
I think it’s best when a story ends realistically (at times with a death) but it’s frustrating when the author chooses a homeless person assuming it will have the least impact on the reader.
Anyways, I probably looked into that too much, but it was the end of the book so it stuck with me the most.

Okay, so I needed a book to read....still can't get my hands on the book club book.........so I raided Zach's bookshelves. He likes Mary Higgins Clark and buys them at the .25 cent library sales. He said his teacher read this to them in 10th grade. I had never read any Mary Higgins Clark, as popular as she is. I was hooked! Very well-written and fun suspense story. And yes, I was able to fall asleep. I was worried about that since all of my reading time is usually at night.....as a result I often avoid scary books!

عن إحساس السعادة والراحة والإنجاز أحدثكم . أخيرا أتممت رواية في أسبوع ! منذ شهر أوت وأنا أعاني كي أقرأ ربع صفحة ولا أستطيع😥
فتحت 26 ملف عقلي لم أقفلهم بعد أي بلغتنا26 📚📖📕📗📘📙📓📔...
والخلل كان بي أنا
طبعا حافظت على هواية إقتناء الكتب وشراءها حتى أن جارتي آخر مرة حلفت علي يمينا أني لن أدخل مكتبة الكتب المستعملة ولن أشتري ورقة 😅😅
وحافظت على عادة وضع كتاب أمامي وأقلام وقهوة وبعض الحلويات 🍪🍰☕🎶📚✒✏🍬🍫
غير ذلك ... النافع الله وكفى . لم أستطع القراءة وما اقرؤه أنساه حين أصل إلى السطر الذي يليه .. لم أقدر إلا بقدرة قادر ولله الحمد وكان الأمر فعلا أني خرجت منه ب المداومة على ورد معين يوميا والحمد لله
والآن نعود لرواية غريب بالمرصاد

👈هي أول مصافحة لي مع ماري هيكنز كلارك .أثبتت أن لها باعا وذراعا في التشويق لكن بدا لي الأمر مبالغا فيه قليلا ..
👈لا أستطيع نقد أسلوبها بشكل قاطع نظرا لأن الكتاب الذي قرأته مترجم . لكن كانت الرواية لتكتب بشكل أجمل لو ركزت على الجانب النفسي للمجرم وليس فقط على الأحداث والشخوص. لو ارتقت بها من أدب التشويق إلى أدب التشويق والرعب النفسي لصارت أربع نجمات
👈 الشخصيات مرسومة بطريقة جيدة لكن أحسست أن بعض الشخوص الرئيسية تحتاج لتعمق أكبر. شخصية القاتل مثلا ودوافعه النفسية .. تحدثت عنها في شكل افكار وذكريات سطحية بينما كل الرواية تدور حول انتقام القاتل عن طريق قتل النساء وخطف البطلة وابن البطل ومحاولة تفجير قنبلة وقتل أكبر عدد ممكن من الناس
👈 حبكة الرواية جيدة لكن في جوانب كانت ضعيفة . بدأت الرواية بنسق بطيئ وتسارعت الأحداث بعدها .

تعمدت الكاتبة تغييب شخوص كانت شهادتهم لتغير مجرى الأحداث أو تساعد في حلها بطريقة أسرع .. جعلتها غائبة
مثلا روزا مشردة قاطنة في مكان التفجير وهو محطة القطارات وهي أيضا مخبأ الخاطف .. حين غابت صديقتها لم لم تذهب لتبلغ الشرطة على الفور ?!!لم انتظرت وهي المعروفة بفضولها وذكاءها ?
أحسست انها غيبتها بطريقة تعسفية نافت طبعها ..
في قضية الحكم على طومبسون بالإعدام التي تأجلت مرتين .. حين سمع العالم باختطاف البطلة وابن خطيبها /البطلة ناشطة في الدفاع عن المتهم بقتل السيدة نينا الفتى طومبسون / وكان حكم الإعدام سينفذ بنفس وقت تفجير القنبلة .. أين ذهبت محامية الفتى ومحاميه? غيبتهم تعسفيا وهي التي خصصت لهم عدة شابترات .. خصوصا وأن جهة الدفاع تحاول جاهدة ايجاد اي ثغرة . والحاكمة ترفض تأجيل حكم الإعدام وعندما انتشر الخبر في الاعلام عن الخطف وعلاقته بالمحاكمة .. تعمدت الكاتبة تحوير الأحداث بالتركيز على أحداث أخرى .
👈 خطأ آخر في الحبكة .. المشردة التي ماتت وقتلها الخاطف ودخلت أين يحتجز البطلة .. ضربها بسكين في ظهرها وقامت البطلة بسحب السكين بطلب من المغدور بها !! أدى ذلك لموتها .كلنا يعلم أن سحب السكين يزيد من النزيف .. وهنا تصبح البطلة قاتلة غير متعمدة . لكن الكاتبة أهملت تماما هاته النقطة وهو خطى فادحة تقوم به ناشطة حقوقية تدافع عن المظلومين و لها دراية بالقانون والعواقب الخ

أتخيل ماما وأساتذتي مثلا يمسكون القلم الأحمر ويصلحون النسخة المكتوبة من هفوات كارثية نتيجة ترجمة حرفية ركيكة
لكن ما جعلها تبدو أنيقة هو أن لغة الكاتبة سلسة بسيطة وغير مركبة وتعتمد جملا قصيرة مما سهل الترجمة وجعلها لا تحتاج جهدا كبيرا .

غير ذلك ... النافع الله وكفى . لم أستطع القراءة وما اقرؤه أنساه حين أصل إلى السطر الذي يليه .. لم أقدر إلا بقدرة قادر ولله الحمد وكان الأمر فعلا أني خرجت منه ب المداومة على ورد معين يوميا والحمد لله

👈هي أول مصافحة لي مع ماري هيكنز كلارك .أثبتت أن لها باعا وذراعا في التشويق لكن بدا لي الأمر مبالغا فيه قليلا ..
👈لا أستطيع نقد أسلوبها بشكل قاطع نظرا لأن الكتاب الذي قرأته مترجم . لكن كانت الرواية لتكتب بشكل أجمل لو ركزت على الجانب النفسي للمجرم وليس فقط على الأحداث والشخوص. لو ارتقت بها من أدب التشويق إلى أدب التشويق والرعب النفسي لصارت أربع نجمات
👈 الشخصيات مرسومة بطريقة جيدة لكن أحسست أن بعض الشخوص الرئيسية تحتاج لتعمق أكبر. شخصية القاتل مثلا ودوافعه النفسية .. تحدثت عنها في شكل افكار وذكريات سطحية بينما كل الرواية تدور حول انتقام القاتل عن طريق قتل النساء وخطف البطلة وابن البطل ومحاولة تفجير قنبلة وقتل أكبر عدد ممكن من الناس
👈 حبكة الرواية جيدة لكن في جوانب كانت ضعيفة . بدأت الرواية بنسق بطيئ وتسارعت الأحداث بعدها .

Higgins Clark knows how to build tension, how to bring threads and characters together, and how to keep the reader turning pages. I mean down to the wire! There are no spare words or chapters in A Stranger Is Watching.
Six-year-old Neil Peterson witnesses his mother Nina being murdered. Young Ronald Thompson says he didn’t killed Nina, but he’s going to the electric chair in a few days. Journalist Sharon Martin doesn’t believe in capital punishment. Steve, Nina’s widower, does. Suspenseful book to say the least! My first Mary Higgins Clark book and I loved it! Halfway through I realized I wasn’t putting the book down until it was finished. Of course at this point the book is a tad outdated, but I really liked that it put me in a different time that didn’t have access to cell phones. Something that would be so easy a fix now couldn’t have been at that time.
My only reasons for not giving a five:
1. I wish there was more character building between Neil, Sharon and Steve. I feel as though it hopped right into the action without having us ‘fall in love with the characters’. It didn’t take enough time to learn their personalities before hopping into the story at hand.
2. I felt as though Arty were such a minor role before they figured out he was the ‘bad guy’, that it wasn’t much of a wow factor for me. I wish more stories and character development focused on him before revealing his intentions.
Therefore, I feel I would have given the book a five if only it were longer and a bit more drawn out.
My only reasons for not giving a five:

Comblé une lacune: lecture de ce roman célèbrissime de Mary Higgings-Clark, publié il y a cinquante ans.
Et pas déçu: thriller vif, rythmé, haletant. Superbe. Dans un New-York du passé, sans Iphone, encombré de grosses voitures, avec sa vieille gare centrale au coeur de l'action, soutenue jusqu'à la dernière ligne.

I only listened to the audio version of this because I recognized the cover of A Stranger is Watching from my mother's bookshelf during a 2-for-1 audible sale.
I am not a fan, that's for sure, but it was mildly interesting, and I did enjoy the characterization of the victims, even if Mary Higgins Clark created a killer that made absolutely no sense, and gave us the worst FBI agents ever assembled.
It is a murder novel. Murders happen, but who cares?! Who cares?
I'd have been happy if they all died, but I am writing this post COVID while a genocide is happening in real time in Palestine. So I don't know and can't.

I chose to read the book "A Stranger Is Watching" by Mary Higgins Clark. This book follows the story of a man named Steve as well as his son Neil and Steve's girlfriend Sharon. One day when Sharon is watching Neil alone, a mysterious man only calling himself "Foxy" kidnaps them both. From then on, the story follows individual characters ranging from Steve to Sharon and even Foxy himself as Steve tries to save his girlfriend and his son. We are given several viewpoints of the situation through the eyes of multiple characters, so it is interesting to see how they act and react to certain scenarios. This is a suspense thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next.
What I think is most interesting about this book is the way it gives more than one viewpoint to the situation. You get to see just what is going on inside the head of the kidnapper as well as the lives of those he's changed. There is more than just the kidnapping as well. There is also a sort of murder mystery at hand that, at the beginning of the book may seem to already be solved, but it begins to change as you uncover just what was actually happening all along. The book for the most part succeeds in being suspenseful, however the ending is very abrupt compared to the rest of the book and only serves it's job to end the book. Luckily the book has intriguing characters that keep the book going even in the slower portions. Some of these characters you really begin to sympathize with. Especially Sharon and Neil, who undergo torturous conditions under a very psychotic villain. This is a good book for anyone who likes suspense or who likes murder mystery's.

I thought it was pretty good and a bit predictable but Clark doesn't give much background on the bad guy. You must accept that great hatred exists for his victims and proceed from there. Several near misses and coincidences move the predictable plot ( as i said before) along as well. There was some suspense in the tale. However, Clark's cookie-cutter writing formula all but guaranteed her trademark ending. A handful of sympathy cards are played as Clark weaves this tale. You're kinda required to feel sorry for asthma ridden Neil and dull Sharon as they endure their horrid confinement. At the same time we're supposed to believe good Ronald Thompson would be put to death so swiftly for a crime he committed when he was 17. Everyone who has any influence in the justice system turns a deaf ear down to the wire. It has to be that way so or Clark's story won't work.

Un livre dont les pages tournent toutes seules, bien que l'épreuve du temps donnent quelques rides au scénario. Quoiqu'il en soit, mon premier Higgins Clark exige de se faire dévorer d'un coup, l'intrigue passe à travers le sablier du temps, et le temps est partie prenante du roman. Chaque heure est comptée, chaque minute , chaque seconde, jusqu'à la toute dernière. Malheureusement, à la toute fin, l'auteur tourne les coins très ronds, très, très ronds faisant en sorte que la notion de la durée crée quelques aberrations temporelles. Une minute, ça reste une minute et non dix. Dès lors, on cesse d'y croire, mais il ne reste alors que quelques pages. Comme une bonne série qu'on écoute en rafale durant un week-end pluvieux et qu'on oublie 12 mois plus tard. Entertaining!
