Bible Self-Study Guides

Haggai, Zechariah & Malachi- Jensen Bible Self Study Guide

Rate this book
This self-study guide offers a look at Israel after the Babylonian exile and the prophecies that were revealed during that time. Haggai made four appeals to the people, including a call to construct the Temple and to have confidence in the future. Zechariah continued to encourage the people to finish the Temple and relayed visions and other prophecies. And when the people became complacent, Malachi was God's instrument for rebuking them for their neglect of God and then teaching what true worship is.

The books in the Jensen Bible Self-Study Guide series are designed to provide you with a broader understanding of God’s Word. Offering historical context and background, author information, charts, and other helps, these books will equip you with a comprehensive reference tool you’ll return to often. Each study includes an opportunity for analysis, response, and further study in a response-oriented format. The thirty-nine books in this series are suitable for both personal and group use.

This book has some great charts and graphs to really help you get the big picture of where these 3 books land on the timeline of the Old Testament. It also does a good job of asking reflective questions on you, the reader, right now: how does this pertain to you.

This book does NOT give you all the “answers”. It’s main purpose is to ask the questions, allowing you to draw your own conclusions.

I used this as a supplemental study and I’m glad i didn’t use it as my main study book because I didn’t find it detailed enough to use as a solo study guide.

This Bible study book was a helpful review of the contents of these three books of prophecy in the Bible and the historical period in which they were written. Perhaps it is just me, but it seemed that the book gave a much more thorough analysis of the book of Haggai than it did of Zechariah and Malachi. Thus, I felt the first part of the book was a bit more helpful.

Since this book is from Moody Press it approaches Bible prophecy from the typical Dispensational perspective, encouraging the student to read the books from that perspective. It might have been better not to approach the books with that assumption and see where the inductive study would have led the study.

Sometimes the notes and questions were insightful, other times they seemed to lead nowhere. I think these books of Irving Jensen are valuable aids in Bible study, but I would not center my study of a book of the Bible on his books.
