In veel romans van Hella S. Haasse vindt er iets plaats dat zich aan de waarneembare werkelijkheid onttrekt, maar dat wel de gang van zaken bepaalt. Ook in haar verhalen is dat vaak het geval. Is het de geheimzinnige, magische kracht van de natuur die aan de gebeurtenis een andere betekenis geeft? Of is er sprake van toeval, dat een ontwrichtende of juist een helende werking heeft?

102 books171 followersHella S. Haasse (1918 - 2011) was born in Batavia, modern-day Jakarta. She moved to the Netherlands after secondary school. In 1945 she debuted with a collection of poems, entitled Stroomversnelling (Momentum). She made her name three years later with the novella given out to mark the Dutch Book Week, Oeroeg (The Black Lake, 1948). As with much of her work, this tale of the friendship between a Dutch and an Indonesian boy has gained the status of a classic in the Netherlands. Titles such as Het woud der verwachting (In a Dark Wood Wandering, 1949), Een nieuwer testament (Threshold of Fire, 1966) and Mevrouw Bentinck of Onverenigbaarheid van karakter (Mrs Bentinck or Irreconcilable in Character, 1978) have been greatly enjoyed by several generations.

October 27, 2022I read this collection through once and did not get much out of it. I think sometimes, which is true for most of us I guess, but specifically from time to time the idea occurs to me that a short story can be like a joke, and if you miss the punchline the whole thing feels a little pointless. So I had a second read of the collection.
This clarified only that I was nonplussed by the collection, though I need to say that the second reading was more cursory than the first and focused just on certain paragraphs.
It is an interesting collection in that the stories had been mostly published before over a period of thirty years or so. The interesting part was the sense I had of a consistent style and even a thematic unity as the seven stories, speaking very broadly, all touched on family secrets of one kind or another.
The settings in the Netherlands, France, and Indonesia are those which are typical for Haase. A couple have historical settings. They are perfectly decent stories, but - in common with another reviewer - I much preferred her collection Maanlicht whose stories were pleasingly numinous. But that is just my sorry taste for the Romantic I guess.

Verhalenbundel met een paar onheilspellende en verontrustende curieuze geschiedenissen. Het lijken bijna meerdere romans. De verhalen zitten vol met complexe persoonlijke en magische verhoudingen tussen mensen en met de natuur over de grens van tijd heen. Het is niet alleen wat Haasse schrijft, maar ook juist wat ze niét schrijft dat deze bundel tot zo’n aanrader maakt.

Uit het titelverhaal Het tuinhuis: ‘De herfst is in mijn moeders tuin hevig aanwezig. (…) Nooit ga ik die tuin binnen zonder het gevoel dat ik verboden gebied betreed.’
Dit is een typerend voorbeeld van Haasses aankondiging van een tweede laag achter de vertelling op de voorgrond. Vervolgens ziet zij altijd kans om, zoals recensent Ingrid Hoogervorst het noemt, om de kern heen te schrijven. Dat maakt de verhalen van Hella Haasse in deze bundel van zeven verhalen intrigerend, waarbij meermalen de clou onuitgeschreven, onuitgesproken is.
Of het zich in Indië afspeelt, waar Haasse is opgegroeid, de auteur verbindt vaak een historisch gegeven – of iets uit de geschiedenis van een familie – aan een gevoel van iemand in de tegenwoordige tijd. I’ll admit it straightaway – I’m a big fan of Hella Haasse’s work, and truly consider her one of the greatest writers that the Netherlands has to offer. She has this way with language that’s so profound and rich, and the ability to say and convey so much with just a few words. I usually eat her stories up, especially the short and mysterious ones, but I have to admit that Het tuinhuis gave me a bit of trouble here and there.
As is often the way with Haasse’s stories, the seven short stories in this book are tied together by the mysterious, unreal experiences happening just below the surface. Nothing fully supernatural or ghost-like, but just a tad uncanny and not of this world. All stories end with a big twist at the end.
“Het tuinhuis” or “The garden house”, is about the relationship between a daughter and her somewhat estranged mother. The tension between the two of them is palpable and awkward when the daughter ends up spending a day and a night at her mother’s garden house, and the underlying mechanics of their relationship and their past are slowly revealed. A strong story, especially in the way the mother and the daughter strain to make something out of their relationship, but I found it difficult to get the actual point of the story and make sense of the ending.
The second story, called “Een perkara” (“A pekara” or “A history”), details the way a young man meets the old mistress of his father twenty years after her departure from Indonesia (then, the Dutch Indies). Having viewed his father’s unhappy, restless death in a concentration camp during the war, and having somewhat fond memories of playing together with his father’s mistress’ children before the war, he decides to pursue her to find out more about the truth of her relationship with his father. Melancholic and sad.
“De Lidah boeaja” (referring to a plant in the story, an aloe vera) recounts the story of a Japanese couple who take up residence in Jakarta (then, Batavia) and whose movements and life are closely watched by a couple of their neighbours, two somewhat gossipy ladies. Mrs Yamada is a quiet, traditional woman who slaves away at home while her husband attempts to run a barber shop. Yet Mr Yamada is also involved in some other type of business – and when Mrs Yamada is suspected of betrayal concerning this, she is judged in the most horrid way, ending the story with quite a macabre twist.
The fourth story, “Het portret” or “The portrait” is about a brother and his two sisters who are trying to figure out how to divide up their heritage and the family home that came with it after their father has passed away. One sister and brother refuse to live in it for reasons that are slowly revealed, while the three of them also try to figure out the meaning of the portrait their father held when he died. None of them appear to have seen the poor, working class family pictured on it before – in the end, the truth is finally revealed. A sad family history.
“Genius loci” tells the story of a woman and her husband who buy a plot of land in France, upon which they build a nice summer house for the holidays. Finding the forest-y environment a bit eerie, the woman starts exploring it and getting to know it, eventually experiencing scenes and memories that are not hers, but that of a man who the road to their house is named after. Discovering his old history and his painful life, she bonds with the lands surrounding her summer house, and also discovers something hidden away in herself. Slightly surreal with a sad history, but it ends on a positive note.
“Een Korè” (referring to korai, a certain type of ancient Greek sculptures) is an eerie story about a person who’s at their friends’ house, and hears the stories about how their last vacation went. The friends are a couple, and to celebrate the sickly wife’s recent recovery, they went to a Greek isle together. During the story, the guest notices a rift between the usually so close couple, of which the reason is soon revealed – during the trip, the husband became obsessed with an archaeological excavation of a kore, completely forgetting his wife. He has also taken numerous pictures of an attractive young girl that they helped out during the trip, who was stranded without any money. At the end of the story, the guest briefly talks alone with the wife, asking if she was okay. The reveal she gives the guest is definitely creepy and goosebumps-inducing.
The seventh and final story, “Een kruik uit Arelate” (“A jar from Arelate”), is about someone imagining how the lives of the native people of Arles went during the Roman period there, which is interspersed with an actual story of a shepherdess travelling to Roman Arelate to tell her brother-in-law that his child, though sickly and soon to die, has been born. He refuses to accompany her back, having fully adopted to the Roman ways and wishing to become something akin to rich and famous in Roman society, but he gives her an expensive amphora back as a gift for his wife. The truth about this jar is revealed in our present day, when the narrator of the story describes that same amphora in a museum in Arles.
As I said before, I had trouble getting into some of these stories. It’s hard to put my finger on, but they simply didn’t really grab me like Haasse’s stories usually do, leaving me feeling a bit disorientated on how to actually interpret the stories. Though some of these were chillingly good, I probably prefer Maanlicht over this collection of short stories.

Hella S. Haasse laat het oordeel over aan haar lezers. Het tuinhuis stond op de longlist van De Gouden Uil en de AKO Literatuurprijs 2007. Voor mij echt een ontdekking, deze reis door de verhalen in dit boek. Verrast was ik.

Ik heb steeds met de boeken van Hella Haasse dat ik ze lees, ze me niet veranderen, en ik toch boeken van haar blijf inslaan en lezen en ik vermaak me wel. Ik vind haar Middeleeuwse/Magisch realistische geschrijf al veel intrigerender dan haar moderne geschrijf, dus ik ben wel heel benieuwd naar Oerog en De heren van de thee en Het woud der verwachting.

Kleurrijke verzameling kortverhalen. Wijd uiteenlopende settings, tijdperken en personages. Het meest bevredigende aspect van Haasse's - af en toe langdradig uitgerolde - schrijfstijl is de terugkerende zoektocht die de lezer moet ondernemen naar de kernboodschap van haar verhalen. Haasse geeft net genoeg om de grote lijnen te begrijpen en gunt je als lezer tegelijkertijd genoeg vrijheid om zelf verder te kunnen speculeren over de gemeende betekenis van haar vertelsels.

Prachtige verhalen van de grande dame van de Nederlandse literatuur. Ik had het jaren geleden al gelezen, en nu geluisterd. Naast de bekende Indische herinneringen verbergt elk verhaal een soort geheimzinnigheid. Haasse heeft het zelf ingesproken (met Willem Nijholt) en geeft na afloop van elk verhaal een toelichting, mooi en persoonlijk.

Een verhalenbundel, gelezen voor school, maar wel in de smaak gevallen. De manier waarop Hella Haasse schrijft over onderwerpen, verheven in mysterie, die later duidelijk worden door subtiele hints, vond ik erg slim en mooi.
Mijn favoriete verhalen waren Genius loci, Een Korè en Een kruik uit Arelate. Het was mooi om te zien wat de rol van vrouwen was in deze verhalen.

Het was fijn om weer eens een boek te lezen van deze ‘old school’ schrijfster. Ze is net zo goed in het beschrijven van neurotisch gedoe tussen mensen als in het schetsen van de sfeer van Indonesië. Mooie verhalen, af en toe wat over the top.

Zeven verhalen, die beurtelings door Hella Haasse zelf en door Willem Nijholt worden voorgelezen.
In het eerste verhaal, het titelverhaal, beschrijft ze de lastige verhouding tussen een volwassen dochter en haar excentrieke moeder, die in het tuinhuis woont van het huis waar de dochter opgegroeid is en waaraan die slechte maar zeer vage herinneringen heeft.
Het tweede verhaal, Een perkara, beschrijft een schandaal waarover Haasse hoorde in haar jeugd in Nederlands-Indië. Ze doet dit vanuit het perspectief van een jongen die de vriendin van zijn vader uit diens Indische tijd, voor hij in het kamp verdween, in de Haagse schouwburg tegenkomt.
In het derde, Het portret, worden twee volwassen zussen en hun broer geconfronteerd met een portret dat de verpleegster van hun onlangs gestorven vader aan hen geeft. Wie staan er in hemelsnaam op dat portret?
Genus loci, het vierde verhaal, was het verhaal dat mij het minste boeide. Het beschrijft de bovennatuurlijke ervaringen die een vrouw op haar landgoed in Frankrijk heeft en die, na onderzoek, te maken moeten hebben met de leprozenkolonie die in lang vervlogen tijden op deze plek moet zijn geweest. Een mooi gegeven, maar niet mijn soort verhaal, het was me allemaal iets te gezocht.
De Lidah boeaja vond ik dan weer prachtig. Een Japanse in Batavia wordt begluurd door haar nieuwsgierige buurvrouwen. Luidkeels verwonderen zij zich erover dat de Japanse zich toch zo laat behandelen door haar man! Maar zij weten niet wat de Japanse wel weet...
In Een Korè verbindt Haasse het verhaal van Persephone aan het lot van een Nederlandse toeriste en haar man, classicus en amateur-archeoloog, in Griekenland.
Het laatste verhaal, Een kruik in Arelate, speelt zich af in het pas door de Romeinen gestichte Arles en toont op ontroerende wijze de kloof tussen de oorspronkelijke bewoners en de Romeinen.
Conclusie: zeven verhalen, waarvan er zes mij zeer aanstonden en één niet. Bij elk van de zeven verhalen geeft Haasse als toetje toe een soort verklaring: hoe is ze op dit verhaal gekomen? Van deze verhalenreeks roep ik daarom van harte uit: luister!

Ik vond dit een erg mooie verhalenbundel. De verhalen waren echt typisch Hella Haasse. De verhalen waren spannend, soms mysterieus en ze hadden een verrassend plot en einde. Het bovennatuurlijke speelde in sommige verhalen ook een rol. De diverse onderwerpen waren ook erg representatief voor de thema's in de rest van haar oevre. De beschrijvingen van de natuur, van de bomen voornamelijk zijn echt mooi en komen ook in meerdere boeken terug, wat dit ook tot een typisch Haasse-boek maakt. Ik denk dat dit misschien wel mijn favoriete boek van Hella Haasse is.

Ik heb al meer boeken van Hella S. Haasse gelezen, maar deze vond ik tegen vallen. Het boek bevat verschillende korte verhalen. De meeste vond ik echter niet erg interessant, vandaar dat ik dit boek maar een ster heb gegeven. Ik vind het moeilijk uit te leggen, waarom de verhalen mij niet interesseerden. Maar ze boeiden mij gewoon niet. Gezien het feit dat anderen dit boek wel hoger waardeerden, denk ik dat dit gewoon niets voor mij was.

Lastig geval. Ik ben een fan van Hella Haasse, maar dit bundeltje korte verhalen overtuigde me nog niet geheel. Sommige zijn goed gelukt, bij andere ontging mij vooralsnog wat de schrijfster met het verhaal beoogde. Vooralsnog het voordeel van de twijfel; een definitief oordeel moet volgen na herlezen. Mogelijk is Haasse meer iemand van de lange afstand, dan van de sprint.

Leuk, lekker leeswerk voor in de trein. En Haasse is altijd goed.

Het titelverhaal vond ik heel sterk en twee andere verhalen zeker de moeite waard. Maar de thematiek van de verhalen sprak me meer aan dan sommige verhalen zelf. Wel heel goed wat betreft sfeer.
