Sometimes the truth hits hard. Chase Clark just upped his game. As an eighth grader, he scores the chance to play on the varsity football team with his best friend, Tripp. But when a hard hit takes Tripp down, Chase is the only one who knows what really happened. And telling could have serious consequences. Making the right call won’t be easy. Neither will the consequences he’ll face, both with the guys on the team and with the school. What’s the game plan when doing right might means everything else goes very wrong?

My son enjoyed this book - and even helped write the review - provided to us by BookLook and Zonderkidz in exchange for an honest review. Snap Decision by Nathan Whitaker is a great sports-themed book for that pre-teen boy in your life. The back cover gives a real life reminder: "Sometimes the right move isn't in the playbook."
Tripp and Chase are best friends. Chase plays quarterback for the JV football team but has a chance to get called up to varsity; Tripp plays wide receiver for the varsity team. During a varsity game, Chase got a front row seat to a big hit on Tripp. The coaches ask Chase if Tripp was knocked unconscious. If chase tells them that Tripp was knocked out, will their friendship be doomed? But if he doesn't tell the truth, what could those consequences be?

My Review:
Football wasn't just a game to Chase and Tripp, it was their life. And getting on the varsity team at school was their dream, and since achieving that dream they feel unstoppable. But the unthinkable happens and they feel that they may lose their grip on that said dream. All of a sudden Tripp gets hurt and it feels that everything that they have worked so hard for may be disintegrating right in front of them as they hopelessly stand by and watch in amazement.
As a result of the accident that occurred, Tripp finds himself battling headaches and has a real hard time concentrating. He starts failing at school because of this and visits to the doctor prove to be a waste of time because they insist he is fine. The boys usual have a strong bond as friends, but the bond they have seems to be under fire as they fight and argue constantly. Soon everything seems to be in question their friendship, their involvement in school and on the team. This book is geared for middle schoolers and I think the author has properly conveyed what it is like in the world of 8th graders.
**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the publisher.
It's football season in small town Lincoln, Florida. For Chase Clark and his best friend Tripp Stevens this is the time of year that they look forward to. Both boys are in junior high but Tripp has been called up to the varsity football team and it is looking like Chase may just get his chance at varsity as well.
When Chase finally makes his varsity debut all seems to be right in his world, until an unexpected hit leaves his best friend with an injury that takes him out of the game. Chase is the one that has to admit that Tripp blacked out and was confused. Tripp becomes angry and withdraws from his friend, blaming him for having to sit out of games. Will their long lasting friendship survive?
Snap Decision is a book about football, but it is also a book about friendship, character, integrity and forgiveness. The story takes a good look at the effects of concussions in teens. It also delves into the pressure that is put on players to just ignore the injury and play through the pain. But the story doesn't stop there it also encompasses what it means to truly be a friend.
This would be a great book for the boy in your life that loves sports. I think he will come away from it enjoying a good story but also learning what it really means to be a good friend and teammate.

Another winner by a great author, Nathan Whitaker! Snap Decision is a great book for kids of all ages! There are a lot of great lessons here, some subtle, some obvious! Whitaker really brings this book to life and the characters are great. I really like the character, JB. He is a great example of a leader! I enjoyed it, as did my boys! Great link to local Rock Star, Ken Block, from Sister Hazel. Really looking forward to the next one! No doubt, there will be some more great characters in the upcoming book!
