Laurent de Brunhoff est un auteur et illustrateur français.
Laurent De Brunhoff has kept the spirit of Babar and his family alive for over 50 years. Babar was created by Laurent's mother as a bedtime story, and was first illustrated by Laurent's father, Jean de Brunhoff.
After his father's death, Laurent continued to create over 30 Babar stories.
Laurent de Brunhoff lived in Connecticut with his wife, writer Phyllis Rose.
That famous picture-book elephant Babar, who first appeared in 1931 in The Story of Babar, presents the alphabet in this educational title for younger children. Each letter is presented with a word beginning with that letter, as well as one or two examples of sentences using such words - Zephir gets jam on his jacket when he juggles the jars" - as the book proceeds from A to Z.
Although not the book I had intended to read - I was looking for a copy of the English translation of the 1934 ABC de Babar, the fourth of seven original Babar books penned by Jean de Brunhoff, but somehow got this 1983 title from de Brunhoff's son Laurent, who has continued his father's work - I did find this a fairly engaging selection, as alphabet books go. The artwork is appealing, especially for fans of Babar, and the examples used are unexceptionable. Sadly, it doesn't look like my library system has the original Jean de Brunhoff alphabet book, so my plan to read all of his original Babar titles has hit a snag. I'd be curious to know what examples the father gave, and how they compare to the son's, but since that isn't possible, I'll be moving on to the next book in the series, Babar and Zephir.
Jack borrowed this book from the Oxford Public Library. I picked it because he loves his Babar board book and stuffed animal, and he has been fascinated with elephants lately.
I pulled out the book this morning, and Jack enjoyed flipping through the pages and "reading" it by himself. I narrated each page for him, so we eventually read the whole book, just in a random order. He loved the elephants and kept saying "Elephant" and making the noise plus arm gesture for the trunk. He was also excited to see monkeys, birds, and some of his other favorite animals. A big hit.
Fun alphabet book with the Babar characters. I enjoyed the little sentences that had words beginning with each letter, but wish every letter had that (V through Y did not).
This is a great alphabet book. Kids can associate pictures with words, but they can also see different words used in sentences. There is more than one opportunity per letter to understand what the letter is, with the multiple pictures on each page. There is also consistency with having Babar on each page. This book also works well for a larger age range, because the younger kids may just be able to read the one word, and the older kids the sentences too, or the parents reading the sentence to younger children.
Elephants introduce the ABC’s to the reader through sentences that use each letter. I liked this book. It was entertaining in a way that could be productive in learning the alphabet. Teach children ABC’s and corresponding with the world.
