Daylight Moonlight is a visually engaging book that provides a unique way for children to learn about different habitats and the animals that can be found in them both during the day and at night. Patterson has painted 22 scenes total, in the forest, desert, underwater, seashore, wetlands, grasslands, mountains, public parks, and even in your own backyard. Each habitat is depicted in daylight and nighttime hours to compare the different wildlife. Children and adults alike will enjoy Patterson's work, which is both endearingly simple and impressively detailed. Each nuanced illustration was completed to perfection and proves the artist's equal passion for both art and wildlife. This book is a fun way to get children excited about nature. Picture book–ages 0-6.
A really neat book that functions like a simple I Spy. There are a few lines of story for each environment we encounter that have various animals to look for. There are more animals than listed, which can add a layer of difficulty, depending on the young reader's choice. The answer key at the end shows you the name of the animal and where they can be found. I appreciated the diversity of environments and the realistic illustration style. Finding this book was a fun surprise. I took a star because there was an obvious error when it came to The Hardwood spread. There was no story, and the image didn't fill the page, which was disappointing. Regardless of that, this is a delightful addition to my library.
Daylight Moonlight by Matt Patterson is a non fiction picturebook that uses realistic illustrations to detail the differences between daytime and nighttime animals in a variety of environments. It is scheduled for release on March 28 2013. The twenty-two scenes include a forest, desert, ocean, beach, wetlands, parks, a backyard, and more. All ages can enjoy the detailed paintings and the information about the different wildlife on each page. I especially enjoyed the pages at the end of the book which include a numbered copy of each image used in the book with each animal listed, which might spark further interest or allow the answering of detailed questions asked by younger readers about the animals on each page.
Daylight Moonlight is visually engaging and enjoyable. The simple phrasing combined with the realistic paintings work very well to capture the interest and imagination of all ages. As each habitat was detailed in day and night, the differences become much more obvious. It ignited the interest for nature in my 6 year old, and refueled the interest of my 4 year old, who adores anything that might involve wildlife, grass, or dirt. The charts in the back of the book helped me further engaged my son, who is extremely fond of finding games, as I could ask him to find all the animals in each painting, and we could discuss the animals that interested him most in more depth.
I recommend Daylight Moonlight for use with children of all ages, and their families. It would work well in a classroom or storytime environment discussing nature.
Daylight/Moonlight is an informative look at wildlife and their habitats not just in the daytime but also at night. You will get a look at some of the wildlife and their habits in the desert, forest, seashore, wetlands, grasslands, mountains, public parks and right in your backyard.
This is a fun way for children ages 0-6 to read about nature. The illustrations speak for themselves and writings tell the full story. The artwork is very life like and pleasing to the eye. I liked that in the back of the book the author has numbered and named the plants and the creatures of each individual page.
I highly recommend this book to teachers, librarians, parents and caregivers for children ages 0-6.
I rated this book 5 out of 5.
Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from Schiffer Publishing for review. I was in no way compensated for this review. This review is my honest opinion.
I love the format of this book. Each pair of paintings shows the same location at day at night, but of course a different set of animals is out and about depending on the time. The illustrations are beautiful and detailed and the variety of animals pictured is great. My one complaint is that the actual story or sentence descriptions were rather boring. "An owl flies through the night sky while two stray cats prowl on the ground." That's hard to make sound interesting or engaging. I wish it was a funner read, but the pictures alone may make it worthwhile for some parents.
This is an interesting short read. The book is geared toward 0-6 year olds with enjoyable pictures that told the tale of animal during the day and night. There was a guide at the back of the book with different names of the animals that were not mentioned in the storyline. I sat here with my 3 year old and read the book in less than 5 minutes. She got bored with some of the section cause seemed slightly dry but it could be due to some of the wording that was used. In addition the follow seemed off in my personal opinion. I received the book for an honest review.
I think I liked the concept of this book more than the actual book. It was fun for my kids to learn about the different animals that come out during the day versus the ones that come out at night. They also liked learning about animals in different geographic locations.
Overall, it was a nice book with lovely illustrations, but there was nothing to really set it apart. Still, it was a good book.
a nice little book showing both daytime and nighttime animal activity in a variety of different habitats. also includes, at the back of the book, lists of the various animals found in each picture to help kids learn to identify different creatures.

Daylight Moonlight is a nonfiction picture book that uses realistic illustrations allows the reader to experience the differences between daytime and nighttime animals in a variety of environments. The different environments that are include are a forest, desert, ocean, beach, wetlands, parks, a backyard, and more. This is an early elementary teachers dream for teaching habitats and animals!!!
Patterson uses gorgeous paintings to portray various natural scenes in daylight and moonlight. Each pair of illustrations shows the exact same scene at both times. Kids will be fascinated as they notice the different animals that can be found at different times of day. This non-fiction picture books is great for introducing some basic nature principles to young children.
Although a very visually appealing book, the settings of the pages are not realistic with the animals lined up as if they are posing for a picture. The concept of night and day is nice for young readers, but it lacks the realistic approach.
