Are you and your family planning to spend some time outdoors? Do you have a young child who desires to understand the sights and sounds they might experience, or the activities they can participate in while outdoors? Well, look no further because you can teach them all about the great outdoors and their ABC’s with Camp ABC: A Place for Outdoor Fun.

Zora and David Aiken have made this book double the fun for parents and young readers. Not only can children learn the alphabet, but they are also introduced to the many activities and animals the outdoors has to offer. A perfect example of this is the letter ‘K’, which is for kayak. We are treated to a lovely rhyming verse and the image of two happy children paddling the waters in their kayak, surrounded by deer, fish, raccoons and mice.
“A kayak’s a fun boat.
It’s not very wide.
The kayaking paddle
Dips in on both sides.”

A true camping adventure book with detailed illustrations and tons of ideas for a family getaway into the wilderness such as leaf tracing, rafting, star gazing, and even napping just to name a few.

Camp ABC: A Place for Outdoor Fun by Zora and David Aiken is a picturebook that combines reinforcing the alphabet with the great outdoors. The book uses twenty six ways to have fun camping; such as watching birds, hiking, and fishing to review the alphabet while imparting the need to care for the world around us. The simple rhymes and full color illustrations which fill the pages are a great way to introduce a love of nature, the importance of conservation, and simply how to have fun outdoors.

Camp ABC has great full page illustrations which illustrate the four line poem for each letter. I will say that some of the word choices are not always as obvious as the are in some books, but the artwork and poem make the choice clear. I rather liked seeing some less than expected choices made, too many alphabet books seem to stick with the expected words, rater than making younger readers take a moment and think.

I think that Camp ABC is a great book for children, and families that enjoy camping, fishing, or simply spending a lot of times outdoors. It could also be a good way to introduce the idea of camping and what activities you might take part in before leaving for a young persons first camping trip.

Camp ABC is a fun story that uses the alphabet to give you plenty of ideas to use on your next camping trip. We’re a camping family, so we really enjoyed this book.

Each page shows you a letter in capital & small form. A simple rhyme corresponds with each letter. The pictures are bright and colorful.

I had a fun time reading this with my 4-year old. It’s recommended for children 0-6 years old.

I always love picture books that teach either the alphabet or numbers. I enjoyed the camping setting for this book and all the camping references and activities. This book made my kids really excited to go camping!

My only criticism is that with some of the letters, it was hard for my children to identify which words were supposed to support the featured letter. The text is written as a poem, and not all the letters were very obvious. Other than that, I loved it! The artwork is gorgeous!
