A guide to understanding the unique and spectacular geology of the canyon country of southeastern Utah and vicinity, with a special section on rockhounding.
A good book to throw in your travel kit when heading onto the Colorado Plateau. Intended only as an introduction to the immense diversity of geology in (primarily) southern Utah, the author, Fran Barnes, does an admirable job of packing 100's of millions of years into 160 pages. Used as guide for determining which colored strata is which, and how and when they were laid down, the book works quite well and will likely accompany me on every journey south.
Like most of the books in Fran and Terby's Wasatch Publishers series (some 66 books, guides and maps) the layout and typography feel a bit antiquated. Given that the husband-wife team have passed away and that Wasatch Publishers is defunct, these books are unlikely to be updated and reprinted. A shame really. Regardless, for those venturing onto the Colorado Plateau and interested in exploring the geology of that vast area, Canyon Country Geology would be a worthy companion.
