Life in a different world to ours is portrayed in this fantasy novel. I'm not sure if the planet it is set on is ours after some disaster or if it is a planet in the author's imagination but it is peopled by human beings the same as us. There is a dictator who rules in the city but there are collections of people living in more remote and rural areas and this book tells us about a group who abandon the city and travel to find one of these other settlements, where they can live life as they choose.
There is a lot of mysticism in the story and the main characters are seeking Life's secrets through a kind of religion which is anathema to the dictator. The action is slow-paced and shown in great depth and this is where this author excels. He builds up the tension by describing the feelings of his characters so that the reader is drawn in, wondering if they will survive. His descriptions of the surroundings are in-depth and full of life and I love those parts of the story. I'm afraid I did get lost a few times, feeling that I had missed the beginning of this tale, as though I was starting with the second book in a series without having read the first. But it was well worth working my way through those parts in order to follow the story.
The only jarring point I had was when items of technology were introduced when I was imagining a world without technology. Otherwise, this is a book for those who like fantasy and mysticism.
