The 5 Money Personalities Guidebook

Rate this book
The hidden key to a healthy relationship is not just managing money but understanding how the other approaches money.

Every couple argues about money. It doesn't matter if you've been married for 40 years or dating for 4 months, money touches every decision you make as a couple--from the $5 cup of coffee to the $50,000 car. And when the two of you don't see eye-to-eye on how much to spend or how much to save, that's when arguments turn into ugly toxic fights that leave both persons feeling hurt and angry. It's why money has become the #1 cause of divorce in the U.S. Obviously, something needs to change. The reason this crisis has not been addressed is because it has never been identified, defined, or given a name. Scott and Bethany Palmer, aka "The Money Couple," have identified and defined this problem and offer concrete solutions to fix it.

With The 5 Money Personalities (TM) DVD-Based Study , you can get to the root of money arguments and start really working together. You'll discover what has an impact on your loved one's money decisions, and you'll learn how to talk about money in a way that's actually fun! You'll figure out how to put an end to money secrets and lies once and for all.

Money in any kind of relationship is always a sensitive area to tread on and many couples in every relationship, either you have it or not is always an object of discussion. Who says love and money can not mix , who says you have to choose?........

Perhaps most of us are in peace with our money personality. After all, we are continuously following strategies and dynamics that help us thrive when it comes to financial struggles. However, discovering why it is so important to know how our money personality works in synchrony with our partner´s seems to be one of the many secrets to marriage life success. Not only because it could offer a stable environment but also because it displays how to communicate issues in order to look forward and build a series of solid arrangements. The new perspective this 13 chapters offers, goes beyond a money personality. All of a sudden, you find yourself questioning if your values lean towards individualism instead of building an everlasting legacy to you and your children. I wish these subjects were taught in school.

You probably had no idea that there were even money personalities let alone 5 of them. I didn't either until I read this book. You can take the quiz here to figure out your primary and secondary money personality

This book will help you be realistic with each other on how best to achieve your financial goals and perhaps cause you to see each other in a new light, help to curtail any financial arguments and perhaps cause you to start dreaming of a great future together again. The book is short, at 180 pages, and is written in an approachable and easy-to-read manner. The 5 money personalities is intended to be read with your spouse over a 90 day period.

The divorce rate in America is at 50%, and 70% of couples claim it is due to their finances. Authors, Scott and Bethany Palmer, found that the real issue was how each spouse thought about money and how the two interacted about money.
The Palmers' ask readers to read the book as a couple and to each take financial inventory to determine their money personalities. Each person has a primary and secondary money personality. The five money personalities are as follows:

Saver
Spender
Risk Taker
Security Seeker
Flyer

From the book:

"Every couple argues about money. It doesn’t matter if you’re raking in the cash or just getting by, if you’ve been married for forty years or dating for four months. Money touches every decision you make as a couple – from the $5 cup of coffee to the $50,000 car. And when the two of you don’t see eye-to-eye on how much to spend or how much to save, that when arguments turn into ugly toxic fights that leave both of you feeling hurt and angry. That’s why money has become the number one cause of divorce in the United States. Obviously something needs to change."

After reading this book I can tell you that primarily I am a flyer and secondary, I am a security seeker. My husband is also a flyer and a security seeker. I love money, and wish I had more. But in the same breath, I don't need it. If I don't have any, oh well. The security seeker in me makes me very anxious about money though. Spending it almost causes me pain. The two money personalities in me are constantly at a battle. Now I totally understand why I feel the way I do when I'm contemplating buying something.

Money never seems to cause arguments in our home and that must be why. It's not a good scenario though, believe me. We never talk about money at all, and we should. This book has taught me that we should discuss finances, no matter how scary the thought is. We are both pretty bad at communication. We are too much alike, him and I. I started out reading it alone, and then my husband got involved after the first chapter. This book has shown me that our money personalities are not a character flaw or irresponsibility. Just how we are wired to be.

This book is not a resource on how to budget. You won't find tricks for creating a balanced budget or tips on saving money. This book is designed to get you thinking about why and how you relate to money personally, how your spouse relates to money and how that affects your relationship. This book is a great compliment to other money management tools that you may use or are looking into using.

This is a great book for couples to study together. It would also be a good small group study. It focuses on how and why we make decisions, especially those involving money, rather than on how to set a budget or get out of debt.

The Palmers have identified 5 money personalities: Saver, Spender, Security Seeker, Risk Taker, and Flyer. Couples are encouraged to identify their individual primary and secondary personalities, which can be done by studying the descriptions in the book, or by taking the online assessment on the website: TheMoneyCouple.com. This is most beneficial if both spouses participate. Then the strong points and pitfalls of each personality are examined to help us become aware of how to balance each other and make good decisions together.
The Palmers further deal with the topics of financial infidelity, and ways to “fight fair” over money.

I highly recommend this book for all couples, whether they are just engaged or have been married for many years. This would also be a helpful book for those in other partnerships to study, such as church boards or business partners to begin to understand why those who have similar goals go about them so differently, and how they can best work together.

I recently read the book The 5 Money Personalities by Scott and Bethany Palmer. This book was by far one of the most helpful, resourceful books I have ever read. While it is geared towards teaching couples how to manage their finances, it is useful for anyone. We all know that one of the major issues in any relationship is money, and how to manage it. This couple give practical tips and advice on managing and communicating about all things surrounding finances. It is definitely an eye opener!!!! I highly recommend it to EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand from the book description that it is a self-help book for couples experiencing money troubles. I was just expecting something more, you know, like providing budget, saving and financial advices. Well, the authors only explained the money personalities which I didn't really get or I was just too bored reading through it to understand. I'm also not impressed with the author's relationship advices, they were just regular advices I'd get from friends. The book didn't work for me, found myself skimming through so I could be done reading this.

If you are looking for a financial book, like how to budget, manage, save money, etc., do not pick up this book.
