Molly Kate Gray did a wonderful job creating the town of Bourland with its hunky firemen and law enforcers. Della and Camden had backstory - a big ol' heavy pack of it - and I really enjoyed seeing them working through their past in the midst of chaos.
Unlike so many authors of romance series, Molly Kate Gray refused to compromise the story of Della and Camden by adding secondary storylines in the sole purpose of selling more books in her series (the next one is in the works, I've read). Instead, she merely hinted at there being another story to be told about one of the Hill brothers, and thus, made me curious about reading more.
Della and Camden are both strong, independent people, and it's refreshing to read stories about characters like that. I'll definitely be reading the next book in the series.
Oh, and FYI, this is a standalone, full-length novel without a cliffhanger to leave you shaking your fist at your Kindle.
Molly Kate Gray has done it again - created a small town universe where the characters are not only endearing, but also complex. When the past mixes with present day, the result is both chilling and emotionally thrilling.
I think my favorite aspect of Gray's writing is the attention to detail. Little random descriptions set the scene and places the reader right in the middle of the action. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the leading characters, Della and Camden, sizzle hotter than the fires plaguing the little town of Crockett. You can never go wrong with hot firemen and fierce FBI agents...
As my first book by Molly Kate Gray, I found Camden and Della's occupations very interesting. Fighting dangerous fires always seems to ignite a spark in any story. Paired with Della's darker past, I found the story alluring and interesting. However, towards the middle and end, I found that the story lost a bit of its momentum. I later had a hard time connecting with Camden and Della together.
However, that is not to say that I didn't enjoy Gray's voice. She has a distinct writing style that makes it easy- to-read and suspenseful. I only wish I connected more with the characters later on.
This was a lovely read with compelling, believable characters, and I really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to the next standalone novel in the series.
