The Vanishing Forest

Rate this book
The Vanishing Forest was discovered ten years ago in a national park, sequestered within massive stone walls. Any humans who entered never returned and the unmanned drones sent inside disappeared.

Lili’s parents were the first to encounter this walled-in forest. They also became its first victims, accidentally abandoning her to be raised by her uncle. As a young girl, she promised to never follow in her parents’ footsteps, but things changed when she witnessed her mother exit the walls, her body mutated and deformed. After beckoning for Lili to follow, she slipped back inside. Lili wasn’t foolish enough to obey her then, but after years of going mad with worry and curiosity, she’s finally ready to launch a rescue mission against her uncle’s will.

Teaming up with a band of treasure-hunters, Lili ventures into the place that lured in hundreds before her, hoping to unravel the forest’s mysteries and reunite her family. However, when the group stumble upon petrified human statues at the entrance, mutated nightmares lurking in the shadows, and survivors warning them to never leave, they realize why the walls were built in the first place and why the forest remained undocumented for so long.

A great read for fans of Attack on Titan, Maze Runner, The Ritual, and The Call.

Received as a review copy from Booksirens, this is an honest review. The Vanishing Forest is not only an amazingly written story but it's both visceral and poignant journey of survival. Buried within a national park, finding a bizarre stone wall tells you something as odd about a structure so out of place within the woods; step through beyond the wall and you disappear... not be seen again. This is a the fate of Lili's parents and others that have ventured deep; but when her mother appears outside of the wall, leaving Lili shocked of how she appears, Lili wants answers no matter how she has to get them. Banded together with another group out for fame and their owns answers of family disappearing; they discover a world of vicious animals- altered by the Forest and people surviving as best they can. All the more disturbing is the secrets hidden and dangerous if you want to release then.

Highly recommended.

I felt like I was watching a TV series.

Seriously. I was having lunch and I thought to myself, "I'll continue watching The Vanishing Forest while I eat" only to realise its a book and its all in my head. Can we get Netflix on this? It's so good.

A group of explorers found a strange wall in the forest and like the normal people they are, they went into the forest but never returned. Since then, there have been government officials guarding the area after sending hundreds of their military to scope the out the forest where they also didn't return.

Lili, at 11, saw her mother outside the walls and the feeling to rescue her mother has been tugging at her heart strings. So naturally at 17 she decided "I'm and adult and I'll rescue my parents." The same night she left, she met a group of called The Rural Rangers that wanted to document the forest and they teamed up. Now they're in the forest and not sure how or if they'll return.

If you like a forest that eats people, messes with their minds and mutated animals, then this is for you. If you like big plot twists that you still can't see the signs of when you reread then you might like this. Please please please give this a try. You won't regret it. I finished an hour ago and I wish I can erase my mind just to read it again.

It's giving The Maze Runner, Attack on Titan, Annihilation and some more that I can't recall.

The Vanishing Forest is a dark fantasy filled with horror, scary looking monsters, and a spine tingling, hiding behind a pillow, feet under your blanket mystery to solve.

I really like the characters, especially Leon, he's hilarious.

"Leon was now carrying three packs, a child, and a screaming Viktor. Viktor started to cry when the beetle crawled over the wagon, crushing the contents under its weight. “Cowards, the lot of you!” Viktor screamed but didn’t fight against Leon as he was carried away." When you would rather save your plants than your life you become like Viktor here.

"It was easier to act brave when someone else was more scared than you."

“If you feel bad about your weakness, work to improve it instead of wallowing in self-pity."

I would have given this book 1 star because it missed its marks completely, but I feel like I should give it a little credit…..

The one good thing I can say about this novel has less to do with the novel itself and more to do with the potential that could have been. What I mean to say is that the “bones” (premise) of this novel had the potential to be extremely good: weird forest, differing levels, inability to leave, doppelgängers, weird shrines, monsters made of bodies….. all things that could have been great, in the right kind of author’s capable and imaginative hands. Unfortunately, this was not the right author. This was more so the case of great idea terrible follow through.

Speaking of terrible follow through, the biggest issue for me (and maybe the real reason this novel fell short of its potential) is that it’s written in such an elementary way. The writing is superficial and almost adolescent, like books I read as a 6th grader, which lack any sort of substance. The descriptions of the levels and monsters were almost impossible to picture, the characters lacked any personality traits to endear the reader to, and ultimately I could have cared less about the story or the outcome.

This book follows a group of young explorers that are looking for loved ones. 10 years prior a group of hikers found a strange wall in the middle of a forest in Canada. Like any normal person they went into the forest but never returned. From the start of this book we are told, there have been government officials guarding the area not letting any go in after so many have never returned.

Lili our MFC, at 11, saw her mother outside the walls and the feeling to rescue her has been pulling her into the forest ever since. So of course at 17 she decided, it’s time. (I honestly thought this was an adult book, nope not in the way I thought, but in the way of horror I would say yes , but in everything else nope). On her way to enter the forest she runs into a group of boys (18 and younger) YouTubers called the Rural Rangers. They are looking to document inside this secret place and become famous. With every heading in the same direction they team up and try to figure out the secrets of the vanishing forest.

I will say I am not a big fan of horror books, but the mystery of this forest that eats people, messes with their minds and has crazy monsters was good. The writing style was good, the copy I did get had one chapter repeated. It wasn’t that bad just moved on to the next. My copy was also written backwards? Idk it that’s the correct description of it but the margins started on the left, just a little funky. Other than these two observation this was a great book. I guessed the twist at about 80-85% still really good though. It's does giving off major Annihilation vibes and just a little of Maze Runner.

This had a great mystery to solve!

If the movie Annihilation and The Ruins had a chaos baby, you'd have this sci-fi horror gem. The Vanishing Forest was an exciting monster riddled ride.

The forest appeared 10 years ago in the middle of Canada and those that went in never came out... except for Lili's mom. But Lili's mom wasn't the same and Lili is determined to go behind the wall and find her. Nevermind the fact that the animals that make it out are distorted and morphed or the fact that Lili's mom was half plant life.

Action packed with deranged blood hungry creatures, poisonous plant life and a secret lurking deeper than most have gone, I found myself pretty hooked. It's a novel that envisions survival in deadly, mysteries elements. I loved how the author slowly foreshadows future events as little reveals are dropped. Each one leading to an ending worthy of a sci-fi series. There are a few episodes where the plot slows a bit and brings in new characters or scenes. It doesn't take away from the rising tension.

The writing style has a young adult feel due to the characters that flows steadily without feeling weighed down with filler. The characters create an almost Scooby-Doo gang type vibe as they explore and parse out the hell they've voluntarily walked into. I liked the depth of each one and how they easily mesh with each other. Don't get me wrong though, this is coated in hallucinations, blood, gore and a primal fear that nips at the heels of those trying to survive.

Overall, I enjoyed my first trip into Jewel's creative world building. It's wonderfully creepy and kept me swiping Kindle pages like a lunatic. If you're a fan of books like The Ritual or Maze Runner and enjoy movies like Annihilation or The Ruins than I highly recommend this stunner for your shelves.

Thank you Booksirens and Jaysee Jewel for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. All thoughts are my own.

First I want to state I received a copy of The Vanishing Forest by Jaysee Jewel from BookSirens and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was one fun read, the twists and turns of the the forest and the fact some choices do have some sort of consequence. Which is a nice take since I know some authors likes the main characters super safe from everything no matter how crazy it gets. This book is in one pov and it is of Lili. She is called to the forest and she wants to find her parts. The guys on the other hand want to go in and record it for fame, but as we get to know them we learn there are other reason why they want to take on the forest which was great character growth. Then trying to figure out the random people in the forest if you can actually trust them or not. The group was super relatable when it came to that, since it seemed half was like lets trust and the others are like no. My copy did have two episode 17 in it. So not sure if that was a glitch or not but I figured I would state it. It did not take away from it at all since I figured out what happened. I did truly enjoy this book for sure. If you like YA books that have some mysteries and found family aspects to it, you will like this one.

First off, this cover is absolutely GORGEOUS, and every time I saw it, I was like "I want to read that right now!" (Stupid life getting in the way.) Once I got into it, I had some serious Annihilation vibes, which is awesome. The characters are interesting, each with their own motivations surrounding the forest, and I really felt like I was right there with them throughout the story, as the description of the setting and other surroundings is on point. I most definitely want to read more by this author, especially in this genre, and I've made a note of her other published books as well as the WIPs she discussed in the Author's Note at the end, because I need more!

I loved, loved, LOVED this book! The story flowed very well, has a great plot, and left me wanting more. I wanted to be able to explore the forest myself, and could imagine so much of what was being described. I loved all of the characters. We received the perfect amount of information for all of the major characters, which I felt made it extremely easy to understand their emotions and decisions. I could see myself feeling the same ways or making the same choices that the characters did if I was in their position.

I especially loved Viktor, and I think I would probably be him if I was in the story (maybe with a little bit of Lili and Leon sprinkled in).

Thank you to BookSirens for providing a review copy.
I did not love this book, but I didn't hate it either. It has a very YA feel, though I'm not sure if it's being marketed that way. There are some glaring plot holes (how did all this stuff get down there in the first place) and the characters felt very flat to me. They never showed any growth, they just had their roles right from the start. The concept of this book is really, really cool and there are some truly creepy monsters throughout. 3.25 stars

The Vanishing Forest was a nail biting, fast paced and enthralling story graphically entailing what can happen when exploring in a deep, dark forest.

It was an enjoyable adventure from start to finish and the characters were extremely unique (all in their own ways), with the setting being vividly imagined and executed and the plot proving to be engaging and immersive.

This is the second book I have had the pleasure of reading by this author and I can't wait to read other works by her in the future.

First, I'd like to state I received an advance review copy from the author in return for an honest review.

We follow a female MC named Lili, who's lost her parents to the Vanishing Forest when she was a kid and lives now with her uncle on the edge of the forest.

At the age of 11, her mother reappears for a brief moment. Years later and unable to forget this sighting, Lili is determined to go into the forest and find her parents.

On the way, she joins forces with the Rural Rangers, a group of boys known on YouTube. Together they must face the monsters within this mysterious forest as they try to find the answers they seek.

This story has one POV (the MC Lili), but each of these characters have their own reasons for entering the forest and while the main focus is on Lili, we still get to know the other characters as well: their backstory, what drives them, their friendship with each other,...They're a tight-knit group and I really enjoyed reading about this group of friends, especially when they started warming up to Lili.

The horror aspect was great. The author painted the forest as a horrible, nightmarish place convincingly. I would run screaming from the dreadful monsters lurking behind those trees.

The forest also had a mysterious aspect. We start out not knowing much about it, only that years ago a group of hikers disappeared inside it and the people who went in after them never returned either. As the story progresses, we slowly uncover more of the forest and its inhabitants.

There were a few turns and twists I did not expect so I was never bored while reading it. All in all, this was a solid horror fantasy novel and I would recommend it if you're looking for a book with a creepy forest setting and a fast-paced plot!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I want to thank BookSirens, the publisher, and the author for all their hard word.

Wow. This was truly an experience. It makes you think about things, and of course, the saying Curiosity Killed the Cat is one I'd take seriously when going into this book. There is a lot of death, gore, violence, sadness, and action. There is a lot in this book. I couldn't put it down. I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next and the question What is going on!? That question was what was going through my head till the end. The end brings it all together.

Monsters and humans smashed together. Boy, it was really intense in the fighting scenes. I felt how the characters felt if they were fighting, hiding, or just the overall atmosphere.

I truly enjoyed reading this book.

~About

Ten years ago (in the year 2025), Lili’s parents went missing in Pukaskwa National Park in the United States, when they came across a ‘mysteriously walled-in wood’. Now, having turned seventeen, Lili plans to go looking for her parents, breaking her promise to her uncle that she will never enter through one of the doors in the forest’s towering walls. However, Lili isn’t the only one planning to enter this forbidden site. Her heroes – the Rural Rangers – are planning to enter, too.

When Lili encounters her heroes entering the site at the same time, she does her best to earn her place within the group, wondering if she will ever see her beloved parents again. Before long, the team comes across a mysterious village, where they learn that escape may only be possible by accessing another level of the forest. Little do they know what lies ahead of them, and the dangers they will face in their attempt to learn the truth about the bizarre vanishing forest.

~Characters

For this review, I will be focusing on three core characters: Lili Nilson, Kaidyn (a key member of the Rural Rangers), and the forest itself.

Lili Nilson is just seventeen years old, yet she is a brave and determined young woman who seeks to be reunited with her long-lost mother, who entered the vanishing forest a decade ago. After her parents disappeared, Lili was raised by her uncle, living close to the site where her parents vanished, yet having to promise never to enter the mysterious area. Lili proved to be a headstrong and determined individual, striving to achieve her goal of finding her parents, no matter what. Despite her courage and heart, there were times where Lili appeared naïve, not truly understanding the ramifications of her actions in the moment. However, as the story progressed, she grew more cautious (for the most part) and developed a range of skills which made her a valuable asset to the Rural Rangers. Her internal pain and longing to be reunited with her family was expressed well and allowed me to empathise with her on a deeper level. Overall, she was a character worth rooting for and I enjoyed her narration of the story’s events.

Next, we come to Kaidyn, a member of the Rural Rangers. From the start, he is the most hostile toward Lili, expressing his distaste over Lili joining them in their exploration of the forest, primarily because he sees her as a burden. Kaidyn is a courageous and decisive young man, who appears stoic and stubborn for the most part. He made an excellent leader – when needed – able to adapt well to a range of stressful situations and performing well under pressure. He always had a plan for how to navigate a situation and remained strong throughout their perilous journey. Only a few brief moments of emotional pain were expressed on his part, largely because he sees his emotions as a weakness, not to be displayed to others as readily. Because of this, the few scenes where he did express his deeper emotions were powerful and really hit home; I could feel his emotions in a very visceral way, as though they were my own. Moreover, despite his initial dislike of Lili, he gradually came to warm to her and even confided in her in difficult times. His character was complex and likable, a true hero, doing all he could to protect and stand by his comrades in arms.

Finally, I would like to discuss the Vanishing Forest. While this mysterious forest acts as the main setting of the story, it is a character in its own right. Upon first description, the forest appeared dark and foreboding, quickly becoming more threatening as I learned increasing amounts of its lore. Inhabited by unthinkable beings, it made for a tense and terrifying place, with complex rules which were hard to understand (for both the main characters and the reader) until more of its backstory was revealed. It was enchanting in its ethereal beauty, yet was also a deadly force to be reckoned with, possessing a vast consciousness with a twisted mind. It wasn’t always clear what the Forest’s intentions were, or where its influence would show up on the main character’s journey, a fact which made the story both gripping and surprising. Overall, the Vanishing Forest as a character – and setting – was one which I will not soon forget, for the very idea of it is truly a thing of nightmares.

~Positive Aspects

There were several things that made reading The Vanishing Forest a memorable and enjoyable experience.

·Firstly, the third-person, past tense narration gave us close insights into what Lili’s character was thinking and feeling, getting the reader emotionally invested in the story and its outcomes.

·Secondly, the action scenes were tense and gripping, more than capable at getting the heart racing.

·In addition, the elaborate twists and turns in the main plot made for a dramatic reading experience, which stayed with me long after I finished the book.

·Furthermore, the main setting (the Vanishing Forest) was dark and foreboding, as mysterious as it was deadly.

·Finally, a variety of threats – both situational and personal/emotional – made this a book which was very hard to put down.

~Neutral Aspects

Despite its many good qualities, I feel that this book could benefit from a thorough proofread, to catch those last few errors.

~Memorable Quotes

Two main quotes caught my attention while reading:

1) ‘ “If you feel bad about your weakness, work to improve it instead of wallowing in self-pity.” ’
2) ‘Focusing on only vengeance could make you take risks that put everyone else in danger.’

~Overview

Overall, The Vanishing Forest was a fascinating read, with gripping battles, shocking discoveries and a truly spectacular ending. Key themes included: survival, family and friendship, sacrifice, loss, and hope.

My Rating: 5 stars.
Recommended to: lovers of unique books with paranormal/thriller vibes and young adult protagonists.

I received this book for free. This does not impact my review in any way.

The Vanishing Forest, by Jaysee Jewel, is a young adult horror that explores how family can lead to the salvation, and ruin, of their loved ones. Lili, who had just turned seventeen, decides to try to find her parents after learning about their disappearances inside a mysterious forest. While sneaking into said forest, she runs into a group known as the Rural Rangers, who, for their own purposes, are trying to film the strange environment. With Lili in tow, the group attempts to uncover the mystery behind the disappearances, only to realize too late the horrors that lie within.

I liked the growing friendship that Lili shared with the rest of the group. I especially enjoyed how Lili came to rely on Jacques, like everyone else, and was able to bond a little with Kaidyn and Aidyn, who were looking for their missing siblings. Was it a dumb move to go into the forest guarded by government officials? Yes. Did I feel that the weapons they brought were a little too naive? Absolutely (I would take a gun over a sword any day). Regardless, the group dynamics really helped them survive. I saw myself the most in Viktor, who, while he may have been regarded as the weakest of the group, was still able to make himself useful through his knowledge of plants and the like.

Moreover, I could understand how the group clung to hope that somehow, someway, their loved ones were still alive. I appreciated the relationship Billy formed with Leon, even though Billy was no longer human in the end. Not to mention the empathy Lili had with Kingsley in that, even though he was somewhat messed up in the head, she honored his way of mourning the deceased. I enjoyed reading about Meriel, and how she showed how vulnerable the adults in this story have become. Moreover, the older generations were tired of fighting, and while a lot of them have made progress towards trying to defeat the forest, in the end they’ve laid the foundation for Lili and the group to finish the job.

What got to me was the importance of familial ties in the story. Kingsley ended up a broken man because he forsook his son. Aidyn died because he refused to believe his sisters were dead, even though their corpses were staring at him in the face. Meriel was almost murdered because every time she saw those monsters, she was reminded of her husband. The only ones who were unwilling to give in, the only ones who decided to push on because they decided to take care of their found family rather than their missing loved ones. It makes me wonder if the creature that caused all this destruction wanted people like that; rather than servants or toys, loved ones that could love and cherish them, offering devotion and unconditional surrender. Still, that’s not love. That’ll never be love.

That, of course, doesn’t even begin to describe the horrifying descriptions that lets me know it’s okay to be a homebody, even after the pandemic. I loved the psychological elements Jewel incorporates into her story. While I do feel the ending is a little too uplifting, especially when so many have died, I still enjoyed the book. As such, I would give this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

This book didn't let me take a breath. It literally stole my breath, set my heart pounding and didn't let me take a break. Not generally a horror fan, I didn't really know what I was getting into with this, I think.

Lili's parents disappear when she's young into a strange forest that is surrounded by walls. Years later, she sees her mom again, beckoning her to enter the forest. When she gets older, now living with her uncle who is part of the military (that are tasked with keeping people from entering the forest), Lili takes off for the forest to go find her mother.

Things don't go as planned and she ends up entering with a group of Youtubers who are there to document/film the forest and bring the footage out for the world to see. They're not convinced Lili is useful, and at first, her future with the group is doubtful, but as they proceed through the gap in the wall, it becomes apparent that something about this forest is very, VERY wrong… and none of them may be coming out again.

The premise that the author is working with is solid. She mentioned in her afterwards that this book was inspired by an anime she watched, and it very much has that feel of a suspense/horror anime like "Attack On Titan." In fact, my mind kept flipping back to that very anime while I was reading the book. The book is mostly well-written. The chapters aren't too long and pacing is very tight, making the story flow well. I wasn't bored, nor did I want to stop reading at any point.

My nitpicks with the book are minor. I did notice some grammatical errors, but I know those usually get corrected by the time the final copy comes out. I also noticed a few confusing minor plot points and a few sentences that could use a bit of polishing, but overall it's a great effort and I was swept up reading it. I would recommend the book to horror fans, suspense fans and anime fans as well, and I'd be quite interested and happy to read and review other books by this author. Thank you to BookSirens and Ms. Jaycee Jewel for the free ARC for my voluntary, honest review.

If you like The Last of Us + Stranger Things, I feel like you would enjoy this book.

The pro’s: The book was a page turner. A mysterious and curious situation. I enjoyed the creativity of the world building and the (mostly) realistic characters. I try to avoid books that follow the recipe of teen angst, romance, etc as they always irk me and I’m glad this author didn’t follow that path.

Cons that if addressed would have earned 5 stars:

The book had a rough start but then eventually dropped into a flow. There were some issues at the beginning that could use some revision. Early on the story mentioned how Lili hasnt given them her name and then suddenly they’re calling her by name.

At couple of characters keeps doing irrational/unrealistic actions, given the scary world they’re in.. i.e.. Why this obsession with a boy? Sorry, I wasn’t buying it. Any sane person (especially at that age) would have been terrified and suspicious of a little, creepy boy showing up in the middle of the night.

Secondly, Aidyen’s reactions to family members was also not very realistic given the dangerous situation they were in.

A few things could have been explained earlier on to help alleviate confusion. For example, some early questions I had:

- why do they not send a plane or drone over top the wall.

- why do they not immediately test walking back out, but instead just keep going straight onward? If I was that curious about it, I would have tested that by at least throwing rocks or something back and forth to see if they exit. The lack of exploration/experimentation when first entering here bothered me.

- the mentioning of the helicopter ride over the forest should happen at the very beginning of the book when introducing the forest.

There are a lot of things this has been compared to: Maze Runner, Attack on Titan, and even The Call. But for me, it gave me the same kind of vibes I got from shows such as Wayward Pines, The 4400, and even The Society. I personally love a good mystery. I enjoy trying to put the pieces together and actively guessing who can be trusted, what certain characters will and won’t do, or “who-don-it”. So when I tel you this book genuinely had me unsure of what the heck was going to happen next, I was clueless. This book is a great example of that TikTok saying/trend: “Never let them know your next move!”. The story had a great plot, that was shown through writing well executed. Thoughts, conversations, and descriptions flowed very smoothly, resulting in an easier read for the audience. I will say however, I think the book had potential to be a bit longer or drawn out. It’s a tad fast paced for my liking but nothing necessarily wrong with that unless you just despise a quick read. All in all, I would definitely recommend if you like drama, mystery, eerie vibes, and/or quick reads that “cleanse your reading palate” between switching genres.

This is NOT a paid review NOR did I receive an advance review copy of this book for free, as I’m reviewing this after it’s been published. This opinion/review is that of my own that I voluntarily chose to share.

Move over gates of Hell, there are new levels in town, and they play for keeps!!! This is one the most compelling stories I have read regarding the unknown. The author does such a fantastic job of creating such a mysterious and scary world that you cannot stop thinking about this story. Trees that can be people, monsters that morph like a Super Hero, or the Power Rangers only to become something even bigger and much worse. You absolutely cannot put this book down!!!!

As the character and their stories unfold you the reader become even my entangled with the story. You laugh, cry, get frustrated, and jump for joy when each person overcomes a hardship.
After reading this story you will never see a Forest the same way!!! You will always wonder what is up with trees that look a little different!!!!

And, if it looks dangerous, then maybe it is....

I cannot recommend this story enough!!!!! I would love if this standalone would turn into a series.

Thank you Voracious Readers Only and author for my free copy of this wonderful story.

Book Sirens eARC. Deep in the Canadian wilderness stands a tall circular stone structure that encompasses many miles. Over the years many have entered but no one ever returns. Ten years ago Lili's parents were with a group of ten hikers who entered attempting to solve the mystery. Convinced that she has glimpsed her mother and that she is still alive Lili joins a group of podcasting explorers as they enter. What follows is a horrifying fight for answers and survival. If you are a reader who has trouble suspending belief avoid but a true horror reader will enjoy the wild thrill ride of flesh eating monsters mutated by one of the most horrifying environments ever created from imagination. Lili is an interesting character that you can relate to and root for as she faces one spine chilling threat after another.

The Vanishing Forest is one of the best dark fantasy books I've read in a while. It's an exciting mix of engaging characters, scary woods, horror, and mystery. The monsters alone add fun chills as they get bigger and grislier throughout the story.

The writing is simple and easy to read, smoothly immersing you in the action, developing character relations, and intriguing twists. I was compelled to keep reading and find out the truth of the story's core puzzle.

Unfortunately, some descriptions were a bit clunky or confusing, giving me pause. Even so, I found the story well-balanced and satisfying from start to finish. I would absolutely recommend it to fans of mysterious and meaningful monster-fighting horror.

The Vanishing Forest should have been a first-rate horror read. But horror requires an author to finesse details so that the reader doesn't truly grasp what lies in front of them. Those odd frissons of unease that are too easily dismissed by the characters, and that lull the reader into false ease. This book has no such finesse. The weirdest of bizarre events, the monsters, the evil - it's all right out there. And the characters react like cartoons. No nuance of feeling, no struggle to accept the horrible reality that should not be… Instead of subtlety and creeping fear enveloping realistic human beings, this is blunt-force trauma on crash-test dummies. I made myself finish reading this ARC, but I can't recommend it.

I received a copy through Voracious Readers. This is a horror mystery story. Who wouldn't enjoy reading about a forest that eats people while playing tricks on their minds. There are monsters who wouldn't look out of place in a Stephen King book. The characters were well constructed and you were told enough about them to understand why they made the decisions they did throughout the story. As the story progressed you felt that you wanted to join them and explore the forest for yourself. It was well written and the fact that I finished it within two days says that it was enjoyable. This is one that could easily be made in a film or a series on say Netflix.

I found the concepts in this world interesting.
Things that amazed me were- (major spoilers - do not keep reading if you haven’t read the book.)
How quickly the young people adapted to death and killing - little to no regard for life. Even when they thought the “monsters” were just animals; they killed with no regard for their lives. And after they found out what the monsters were they killed with a righteous believe that it was for the good of all.
The mentality reminded me of “the stoning”; or “the hunger games”.

Overall I enjoyed the read. And I feel for the survivors as they will be govt lab Guinea pigs until they die.

This book is perfect for a YA looking for adventure, heroes and heroines, monsters and villains, good vs evil, and epic battles. The story is based in a fantasyland within a hidden forest surrounded by walls, where those who go in never return. Lili and the 5 members of the Rural Rangers (a TV adventure show) enter the forest behind the wall looking for family members who went missing inside. Along their way they will encounter beasts intent on killing them, as well as villagers who have somehow managed to stay alive, where most have perished. Who of our group will live, and who will not?

I really enjoyed the story. I would've given it five stars, but the last three-fourths of the book became more gory than I would have liked. It wasn't total gore or whatever, but it just got too much for my comfort. If the book had started out that way when I had read it as an e-book sample, I would've not bought the solid book. However, the intensity and viciousness of the monsters were gradual; that saved the story from being ignored by me. As I said, I enjoyed the story and the characters; thus, I am giving it four stars. For future readers: It has a good, satisfying ending.

I really enjoyed this book, the monsters were unique and there were a few twists and turns. I liked the main group we followed through the book and the adventure they had conquering the forest. I would definitely read a sequel about the next adventure if the author decided to write one!

Super exciting read. I was on the edge of my seat almost the entire time. The plot was incredibly unique and I absolutely loved that the setting itself is the villain. Definitely going to recommend this one to friends. I think anyone who like horror stories and nail bitter action will enjoy this book.

Interesting premise with good characters. Stand alone book. Best for young adults. Follow our heroine in her search to find her parents who disappeared into a mysterious walled forest from which no one returns.

reminds me of annihilation

This whole story reminds me of 2018 annihilation with Natalie Portman. I did enjoy it as it was a quick read. Can see where the author got bits from attack on titan kinda. The end though I swear I had Deja vu and seen or read this somewhere.
