Showdown At the Okie-Dokie

Rate this book
Five Fierce Divettes!

Theyre spicier than hot sauce, and as cool as iced cappuccino. Galleria, Chanel, Dorinda, Anginette, and Aquanette are ready to take the world by storm with their singing group. Their message is simple: "All those other girl groups better bounce, 'cause the Cheetah Girls are gonna pounce!" They're gonna pounce, that is, when they finally get discovered and signed for that mega-buck record deal. But while they're trying, these singing sensations will keep you laughing and "good to go for a giggle," as they face the joys and challenges of growing up - and moving up.

Who's Growlin' Who?

The Cheetah Girls are down in Houston and flyin' high. Their opening show for Karma's Children was a hit, and they have a demo tape in the works. But then their arch rivals, the Cash Money Girls - CMG - accuse Galleria and Chanel of cribbing lyrics from a CMG song. They warn the Cheetah Girls that they better bounce off the music scene - or else!

The ninth book in The Cheetah Girls series brings some much needed drama, but it's still more fluff than anything else.

Told in Galleria's POV, we are still in Houston after the Thanksgiving with Aqua's and Angie's mum, and the Cheetah Girls have signed up for a rodeo show that will also have nemesis group, Cash Money Girls, perform after they met in LA. Chanel and Galleria had previously written a song called 'It's Raining Benjamins' that they borrowed heavily from the CMG and even stole their idea of throwing fake money at the crowd. Why they would keep that in their performance and expose themselves as copycats is beyond me.

Despite many of these books feeling filler as the girls wait patiently for word on whether or not Def Duck Records are going to give them time in a recording studio, this book at least made up for that with some drama. And actual drama involving the group, not individual drama that is resolved by the end of a POV's book. The copyright infringement debacle made this a more interesting read, especially when the CMG confront the Cheetah Girls. All I'm saying is, the Galleria in the movies would never have tried to steal the flavour of another band. I was glad the girls got their comeuppance in this one. We should be rooting for these girls, but sometimes they need a hard lesson to get their heads in check.

Showdown at the Okie Dokie (Updated)
The CG’s have decided to stick around in Houston for a few days to try to see if they can get a spot at an Urban Rodeo at the Okie Dokie Corral. Even if they don’t get on as a warm up act, Bubbles wants to ride a bull at least once. The group Diamonds In The Rough are giving them shade, while they’re talking to Miggy and Mo (another group). Galleria asks them if they’re trying to get into the event but they say they’re already booked for it and they aren’t accepting any more acts. Miggy tells Bubbles they should go over and try to get in anyway. Diamond (and that’s the leaders real name) says they’ll just be wasting their time.

The CG’s make a toast and Diamonds in the Rough leaves. The twins turn down seeing them perform but their mother says she hopes they’ll stick around and see Karma’s Children perform lately. Galleria promises her they will. In fact, she says they should be taking notes. Then gives the twins props for them being there in Houston. Galleria has her camera even tho pictures aren’t allowed. She plans to bum rush them in the dressing room. Even tho, the twins are reluctant.

“Miss Houston” Amanda Darby comes out and almost trips over her dress. She talks a little bit and talks about how the ticket profits will benefit Houston’s homeless. She compliments all the groups. Then she introduces “Karma’s Children”. In Galleria’s words “Karma’s Children seem to have the flavor everyone savors but one day, I know we will be the flavor of the century (or at least the year!). (The Beyonce faux lead singer’s name is “Backstabba”). Jay Z is “Jiggy Jim” (oh I get it Jigga). After an hour the show finishes and “Backstabba” thanks everyone. The CG’s say maybe they should “borrow” the smoke effects for their show.

They try to make their way to their dressing rooms by are blocked by security. Galleria says they left their wallets, but he points them in the opposite direction. Mrs. Walker just tells them lets go and Galleria wishes her mom was there. Mrs. Walker tries to take their mind off it by taking their pictures, but Galleria is mad. The twins run into an old friend “Beetheat”. It’s clear Aqua likes him. Then a lot of people recognize the twins and swarm them. The twins say these girls are also involved in Kats and Kitty. Galleria stops paying attention and tunes out. She’s starting to miss home where *she’s* known. After they leave, the twins chatter on about old school friends.

Galleria shares the saying she came up with “Hair extensions maybe career extensions.” And then adds “but talent and skills will pay my bills” and says she’ll add this to their credo. Mrs. Doretha says Galleria has to come home. She asks why it’s always dad’s family they see and Mrs. Doretha starts to cry. Bubbles wonders why her mom can’t just be open with her. Dorinda takes the phone and says she’ll talk to her. She takes the phone in another room for privacy. Mrs. Walker says she’ll talk to her mom and tell her their welcome to stay.

Galleria asks what they were talking about but Dorinda just says “girl talk”. Galleria thinks about how chummy her mom and Dorinda have been since her adoption party. Dorinda just says she just didn’t want to be alone, but she did say that can stay if they get the gig at the Okie Dokie. Galleria accidently mentions the twin’s father girlfriend. They tell her not another word and luckly their mom was on the phone. Mrs. Walker says Mrs. Doretha says they can stay. She tells them to call her Junifred.

Uncle Skeeter picks them up and takes them to the rodeo. Crusher will be preforming as well as Karma’s Children. Bubbles has a bad feeling that they won’t be preforming with headliners. There’s a bunch of talk about bulls that I won’t bore you with between Skeeter and the CG’s. The CG’s sing for Mr. Steer (It’s Raining Benjamins). He says he’ll give him the opening spot but he can’t pay them. He tells them about the Sassy sparilla Saloon. That’s one of the saloons where customers will be served beverages and food. It’s for young people and there will be a contest (warm up show) before the All Girls Rodeo event.

The prize is a a bronze cowgirl statue ... and two tickets to Astro World for the Holiday in the Park Celebration. They’ll also be preforming with the Cash Money Girls. He says they moved to California but they’re originally from there. There will be six groups preforming with them. He shows them the salon.

The CG’s get to go to Galleria’s name sake (The Galleria Mall). They find some Cheetah Stetsons for 15.00. There’s a race before the performances (in costumes). It’s called the Dinosaur Dash. Chanel participates in it. So do Egyptian and India (the twins cousins). They get special goody bags. Beet Head is at the mall and is also in the event. He won’t dance with Aqua to “The Twist” (he thinks its wack) and she’s disappointed. He sees he’ll see them at the rodeo. Beet Head wants to know where they got the idea for throwing the money. Galleria says that’s just how they do. He says his mom heard that song. It was called “It’s Raining Men” or “Cats”. Galleria says she’ll ask her mom after Thanksgiving. She’s getting sick of Beet Head.

He says the group was called “Two Tons of Fun” or “The Weather Girls”. On the way to Big Mama’s they sing and dance along to Chubby Checker. There’s some tension between Skeeter and Big Momma. But he’s full of compliments for the CG’s and his nieces. Big Momma tries to bring up the lady he’s dating whose called but she doesn’t have a son whose single enough to date. He just says mmm hmm and keeps singing Its Raining Benjamins. Then Big Momma changes the subject and asks about how they came up with the idea for the song.

Aqua asks if Big Momma knows what fenugreek is. She says herbs that shouldn’t be messed with. She adds back in the slavery days, desperate women used to mix fenugreek with Sargasso sticks to chain a man's heart to them for life, in case they got separated or sold off to a different master on another plantation. She says it looks like they daddy done gone to NY and got caught up. The twins say when their alone as soon as they get back home, their putting an end to their daddy’s new girlfriend. Then they go visit Granddaddy Walker who works at a funeral parlor. They talk about how they came up with the idea for their song and throwing the money and the other contestants. Granddaddy Walker invites them all to spend the night there.

Weirdly there’s this lady Wilma that Granddaddy and his wife said use to like to dance. They hear a tapping in the middle of the night and they go check her coffin and it’s empty but they can’t find her corpse. Mr. Walker didn’t hear anything when they ask her the next morning. Their mother tells them if souls aren’t happy when they die, they keep doing what they did in real life but then she says no. It was probably just the wind making the noise. Backstage, Aqua baits the Cash Money Girls about claiming their from Oakland when they’re really originally from Houston (Georgia Washington, Abrahamma Lincoln and Benjamina Franklin are their names if your interested). They say they claim Oakland because they think Houston is corny so they front.

Diamonds in the Rough show up and there’s tension in the dressing room because it’s so small. As the Cheetah Girls preform, Bubbles see the Cash Money Girls look at them horrified. Georgina confronts them in the dressing room about biting their flava. They stole their song and threw it in their faces. The Cash Money Girls GO OFF on the Cheetah Girls, tell them they aren’t gonna win anyway, and they better not be there when they get back. Aqua says wellll… They did get the idea to throw money from them. Galleria says yes but she didn’t think it was wrong, but then deep down she knows she really did. But she does think their song is different from theres and don’t groups do this all the time?

The CG’s win the contest. They get the trophy. They get six tickets to Astro World. They get out of there before they can get into another confrontation with CMG. Galleria says they were right and their luck it wasn’t recorded (the song) or they’d get sued for copy right infringement. So all they can do is tar and feather the CG’s. She tells Bubbles to do the right thing. Diamond surprisingly calls and says she has an idea how to squash the whole thing and she tells them to meet her at Astro World.

Galleria tries to play on their ignorance on being young to the music industry. They agree not to perform the song anymore. They say they can keep the trophy but don’t bite their flava again.

My Thoughts:
The most important part in this is. YES! The Cheetah Girls did bite the CMG money throwing thing AND they were DUMB to just leave that part out of the show when they KNEW they got it from CMG and they were there performing. SO, they deserved to be fronted. But what caught me off guard was that they said they bite their song. UMMM! It’s kinda like that whole debacle over “Blurred Lines”. Totally different song. And I really didn’t hear enough in it to warrant a case. They just didn’t sound alike to me. And then why did Galleria (and her mom) feel like she bite the song off CMG in the first place? Even if she got the idea off CMG, she didn’t steal any of the lyrics. Over and OVER and OVER people come up with similar songs. If that were the case people would be suing all over the place. I just felt like CMG should have only got in their face about the money part in it.

This one brought the drama but something wasn’t adding up. Yes the cheetah girls did copy CMG with the money move but claiming the cheetah girls stole the song? No. Not on my watch.
This was the weakest book in the series so far, I did enjoy the events in Huston and I hope in the upcoming books we still get to explore different places.
