Just when it seems that his football dreams are history, Wyatt's older brother, Aaron, makes an unexpected offer: If Wyatt ditches golf camp, he can play with Aaron in the League of Pain: the roughest and most secretive rogue football league in town.
Now Wyatt has a choice. He can play by the rules like he always does, or he can follow his heart—even if it means lying to the people he cares about the most.
But if Wyatt wants to play in the league, he must learn to accept the penalties.
The League by Thatcher Heldring, a Fictional story published in 2013, takes place mostly at Wyatt's house and a field. Wyatt Parker wants to play in a secretive football league in the hope it will make him tougher than he is so that he won’t have to face bullying and get ignored by girls, particularly the one next door. But what happens when his dad finds out he ditched his golf camp and the father-son golf tournament to play football with his brother in the summer? How about when he starts lying to the people he cares about? Breaking rules he had promised not to break. And hanging out with people he thought never noticed him. Friendship, romance, fear, courage, hard work, and much more. The book was relatable, entertaining, engaging, and ambitious. I would recommend it to everyone. It is an issue everyone has faced before. And it is great reading about something knowing someone has also been through what you’ve been through.
The League is a sports book written by Thatcher Heldring. You are first introduced to a scrawny eighth grader, Wyatt, who is picked on and has a secret crush on his next door neighbor/best friend Evan. Wyatt is superb at golf and his family does nothing but play golf. Wyatt wants to start playing football to impress Evan. Wyatt’s brother Alex tells him about a secret football league. Only the people who play in this secret league know it exists. The one catch is that there are no rules when you play in this league. So, Wyatt forms a plan that involves skipping golf camp, evading his parents, friends, and his sister so he can be a part of this league.
While Wyatt sets off on his journey a lot of people figure out his secret. He gets a bad reputation. Evan thinks that Wyatt is a criminal when she catches him shoplifting. His parents start to become suspicious when he comes home from “golf camp” with bruises and scrapes. His best friend thinks that he abandoned him for football. There are good things that come out of this league. Wyatt becomes tough. He starts making decisions for himself. He defeats a school bully. How far will Wyatt go to cover up his secret? Will he get found out? Will he go back to his normal life? Read to find out.
The League is a great sports book for anyone new to the genre. It has all of the makings of a good sports book, the kid with the problem, (Wyatt) the girl of his dreams, (Evan) and a bully. I recommend this book to someone new to the genre, but not to anyone who has read a lot of sports books. This is because if you read too many of these, you will get bored. If you want some variety in these books, a suggest two authors for you. Jon Greene, and Mike Lupica. These are great authors who add a lot of variation to their books while keeping them within our expectations for sports books.
I read the book The League by Thatcher Heldring. The book is about a boy named Wyatt who wants to impress his neighbor Evan (girl) because at the movies she saw a boy named Brian Braun she kind of liked. His parents signed him up for a golf camp with his best friend Francis but, he wants to play flag football with some friends from school so he can impress Evan. His brother Aaron overheard him talking about football with his parents and he invites him to play in the League of Pain (football league in the park with Aaron friends). He decides to play football at the park and he has went a two weeks without getting caught then his parents start to get suspicious for why he wasn’t at golf camp. A couple days later his parents bust him and he couldn’t go to football for the rest of the summer. In the book the author left some cliffhangers that made me want to keep reading here are some of them. The first one was when he dad is talking about he can try a different sport and Wyatt thinks in his head “ I hope that includes football, I thought, imagining how nice it would be to play a game without having to lead a secret life.” The second one I found was when Wyatt says “And there were still ten days left until the Fourth of July.” What is going to happen between the ten days. The last one I found Wyatt says “I feel sleep that night wondering what Aaron was up to and how I could get in on it, because whatever it was sounded like a lot more fun than golf camp.” The 3 cliffhangers I found really wanted me to keep ready. I would recommend this book to 5th to 8th grade, anybody in general that like football, and people that aren’t the best at the sport they play. I think 5th to 8th graders would like it because that is when the age when tackle football begins and they can relate with it. I think people that like football would like it because it is a good football story. I also think people that aren’t the best at a sport they play because it can inspire them so like they can make good plays if they try. A thing I didn’t like about the book was how they just ended it doesn’t talk about the rest of the summer for him.
The League is a very interesting story about a boy trying to fit in and impress a girl. Wyatt Parker is constantly bullied in high school, and he is sick of it. Wyatt is on a mission to get the girl next door to like him. The girl’s name that lives next door is Evan. Wyatt and Evan are really close friends, but even doesn’t have the same feelings as Wyatt does. When Wyatt finds out that Evan likes the quarterback on the football team, Wyatt decides he should go out for football. Wyatt is a scrawny kid, his parents don’t like the idea of him playing football because it seems unsafe. Wyatt’s dad signs him up for a golf camp instead of letting him play football. Wyatt decides to join a secret football league that his brother plays in. Wyatt’s biggest bully is a part of the league as well, but that doesn't stop from joining. Throughout the book Wyatt lies to his parents to keep them from finding out their secret. I enjoyed the book for multiple reasons. I enjoyed the book because I like football and that was a major part in the book. I liked the theme of the book because it is good to stand up against bullies and not let them control you. There were not many aspects of the book that I didn't like, but if I had to choose one it would be that the league was secret, if it was a real league it would be cool to see his team win the championship. If I were to recommend this book to a person or group it would probably be football players and people who are bullied. I would recommend it for football players because of the football that is played in the book. I would recommend the book for people who have been bullied because the book shows that it is okay to stand up to your bully. One quote to summarize a large part of the book would be “ You can’t be afraid of the bullies”, because it supports the main theme of the book.

Wyatt Parker is about to enter high school and he is small for his age. That is one of the primary reasons he is regularly bullied and lacks the self-confidence to stand up for himself. His father is an ardent golfer and wants Wyatt to feel the same way, even though he doesn’t have a passion for the game. Wyatt has a desire to play more energetic sports, but his parents are afraid that he will get injured. Wyatt’s older brother Aaron is a bit of a rebel, and he is a member of a sandlot football team that plays another team. While they have some rules, they bang each other up quite a bit. Against the wishes of their parents and lying to them about their whereabouts, first Aaron and then Wyatt are on one of the teams. At first, Wyatt is reluctant to put himself at risk, but suddenly he is belted by Aaron, who tells him that if he survived that, he could take it, so get into the game. Realizing that he enjoyed the contact, Wyatt finds himself enjoying the significant physical contact. Both boys lie to their parents about their activities, so there is an eventual day of reckoning. Wyatt is also friends with Evan, the girl next door. They bounce around the idea of “dating,” doing things together but being careful not to do date things such as holding hands. When Wyatt encounters the primary bully that torments him at school, he discovers that his willingness to take the punishment garners him respect and the bullying stops and there are movements towards actual friendship. Even though Wyatt deceives his parents and lies to one of his friends, this book succeeds, because ultimately it is the story of a boy chasing his dream and that pursuit has a very positive effect on his life.
Wow, the book captured me from an early start. I felt no bumps from the launch to the end, nothing was interrupting at all. The real reason this started Wyatt, the main character is on a date with the hottest girl in the school, and then the best football player on the school team goes to Wyatt and the hottest girl in school. Then the hottest girl in school goes crazy for the football player. Then Wyatt thinks I should play football so I get her back to be my girlfriend because she loves football players, so Wyatt gets home and plays football with brother Aron. Then Wyatt told Aron I am going to play football.'' Aaron asked are you going to ditch the golf camp he needs to decide'' Should I go to the football league? No rules, no pads , nothing. Or stay safe and play golf. After a while he decided. To ditch golf camp and go to football. Find out more by reading the book. In my opinion there’s lots of nerve-racking moments in this book. Thatcher Heldring made so many cool and exciting moments I was sweating. The beginning is funny, I couldn’t put the book down. It was so good. From the exciting moment on every page. I felt, Heard and listened to the book. It was amazing. I would highly recommend this book to people who enjoy sports. I really hope people get to read The League. It is good all the way through.
I like The League by Thatcher Heldring because it shows a kid who is nerdy and is trying not to get bullied, try out a secret football league with no rules or pads so he could be tougher. To try to scare his bully Spencer. At the end of the book Spencer and the main character become kinda friends because they’re don’t with hating each other and have respect for each other. But along the way he almost lost his best friend because he was trying to fit in with the football people but in the end they apologized to each other and we’re friends again.
A simple story of a 14-year-old boy trying to be grown up. He wants to play football-his Dad wants him to play golf. Whats a 14-year-old supposed to do-the only thing he thinks he can is to lie! In the end, he finds out, lying wasn't the best thing to do!
I think that this was another great football book and a good book about bullying and about lying. I think it was a great book to teach a lesson about lying. A all in all great book.
This is a great book for people who love football. A teenager plays football for the first time without pads with high schoolers. He goes behind his friends and family's back. I recommend this book.
The beginning and middle of the novel was very good, where he was changing himself and the new experience of things he thought he would never do.I would have given it more stars, but the end was very rushed and not amusing in where they make peace and main character Wyatt suggest to the now new friendship bond "So, you want to get a corn dog," the humor the author tried to put was just not working out, where the author left many unanswered questions.
This book is really cool because it is about some teenagers that want to join sports but his parent do not let him join football . They say it is a dangerous sport , in the past history on the news there has been injuries, broken bones and concussions. This boy named Wyatt he is 14yrs old he wants to play football because there been some kid that has been bullying him every time during the school year and he got tired of it already. So Wyatt thinks if he plays football he will look tough and nobody would pick on him again and they would actually respect him. That is not the only thing why he wants to join football. He is in love with some girl named Evan. She does not like wyatt like a boyfriend because she only sees him as friends only well best friends. When they went together to the theaters there was some popular kid named bryan. Everybody like him because he is a football player and he gets all these girls. So Evan likes him but when she went close to him and said hello,he. Just looked at her and ignored her then she got all sad when she went back to wyatt and he got all jealous because he l wants her to become his gf. Everyone thinks wyatt is a whimp and really weak because he is all scrawny looking. So wyatt is tired of playing golf and that his dad made him join golf camp without asking if he wanted to or not. He wanted to change things like for example join a football league and play during summer but his parents say it is too dangerous .. Wyatt's brother Aron tells him,” just make up a lie it's not like they would even find out.” he could lie but there's one person that likes to find out everyone's business and that is his lido sister. He makes a deal with his sister that if she does not tell his parent about playing football he would help her with her homework.Later on he has been lying but then his mom kinda figured out what is going on because he came home all dirty with grass stained on his clothes I think the author wrote this book because probably it is about his life when he was around his teenage years and how he fell in love with his best friend but she did not felt that way. He also wants to encourage anyone that if they really like that thing they want to play they should do it .it is not always about listening to your parents because later on in life you have to make a choice.like about wyatt he got tired of playing golf with his friends nd he thinks thats not a tough sport as other people see it so he joined football much better like how his older brother played in football camp.
Review: The book that I am done reading is The League by Thatcher Heldring and this book is the best I would rate this book a five because it is about a kid that wants to play football to stop getting bullied and there was a new girl that he likes but she only likes boys that play football so that is why Wyatt the main character wants to play football and Wyatt only has one best friend and his best friend gets bullied to but does not want to play football like him. Wyatt has a older brother that plays football and the is another main person of this story because Aaron the older brother wants Wyatt to play and stop getting bullied but the main problem is that wyatts parents does not want him to play football because they think he is good at golf and his dad liked golf and wyatt's dad sign him and wyatt up for a tournament and then his dad signed him up for golf camp so he could get better and they can win it. Wyatt has to go to the golf camp for two weeks and he does not want to do that so he has some help and it is his older brother that wants him to play with him and have no problems in his life so he gets him out of gol camp and covers for him but wyatt is not sure if he wants to brake the rules or follow the rules like he always does and then he thinks of what will happen if he gets caught from his parents but his brother is saying he will not get caught from them and then if he does get caught his dad that pt him on the golf camp will be sad because he is not following his dad's footsteps and trying to be a good golf player.

I think it was a really good book it started off seemly like it had nothing to do with football but as I got further in the book he and his brother got into a football league and it was 2 teams one summer and no rules.
The League by Thatcher Heldring. The book “The League” is a sports book written by Thatcher Heldring. You start reading when you get introduced to the small and skinny 8th grader, Wyatt. He lives next door to his crush/best friend Evan. Wyatt is a golfer with his friend Francis who is addicted to golf, the only thing is that Wyatt wants to play a real sport to impress his friend Evan. Aaron, his brother, hears about this and invites him to a rogue and secret football league called the League of Pain. Wyatt ends up playing with them all summer and makes friends with people he had been scared of before. Evan invites him to come watch fireworks for the 4th of July when the unexpected happens, his parents find out and he gets 2 months of community service.
Heldring did a good job of the reader not really expecting things. Like out of nowhere something big happens and I wasn’t ready for it. When Aaron hit Wyatt it was very unexpected, it went like this, “I was quiet Wyatt, too afraid of getting tackled. That was when Aaron hit me, blindsided me, drilling me with his head and shoulders.” The story mood changed very quickly throughout the book.
I recommend this book to anyone that is in or enjoys football. You could also use this book as a play sheet because at the end it shows all the plays they ran. This book wasn’t too hard to read. I really liked the book overall and I’d recommend reading it.

The book entitled "The League" fit my genre very well it had just enough sporty events and mixed with wyatt's personality that I loved it I finished it in two days and thats because I could never put it down because it grabbed me and said read me because of how good the cover was. I know they say don't judge a book by it's cover but this book had an amazing cover I just had to check it out. Wyatt Parker is just an ordinary kid but because of his rebleness he gets to play in the league the roughest and toughest league ever! There are no rules and they don't call it the league of pain for no reason. There are only two teams and they battle to the death every single time they meet. Wyatt ends up not doing terrible in the league and successfully just does better than his school bully all to end up being one of the coolest kid's in his school.
Wyatt is a conscientious student who is a target for bullies and unpopular with girls. The last straw for him is when his parents sign him up for golf camp over the summer instead of letting him play football. A surprising offer from his older brother to play in a very rough, very secret football league leads Wyatt into many moral dilemmas. One thing that really bothered me was that Wyatt's best friend is a girl named Evan. Every time I read the name Evan, I pictured a boy. Very frustrating, but doesn't have a thing to do with the actual quality of the writing. This is a good fit for those wanting a sports book, but it often felt quite pedantic and heavy on the implied moral lesson. I also found the ending to be unrealistic and too good to be true.
I really like this book because of the flow it had i felt it had no bumps in the road and nothing to confuse me. The summary of the book is Wyatt is on a “date” with the hottest girl in school and the best football player on the team come in and the girl goes all coocoo for him which make Wyatt think if he played football he could be more than friends with girls. So the next morning he asked his brother to play pass and when they're playing pass Aaron his older brother asks him if he ditches golf camp he can come to The League the toughest football league no rule just two team and one camp. Wyatt had to think about but he finally decided to ditch golf camp to go play football read the book to find out more...
The book is realistic fiction, Wyatt is a nerd who can't make friends and stand up to bullies, so he comes up with a plan, playing football in a secret league with his brother, but there is one problem, his parents signed him up for Golf camp with one of his best friends. While reading this book i saw that doing what you like can even help you make friends and or stand up to bullies. When he realizes getting hit for the first time doesn't even hurt a lot, he feels like he can do anything! I would recommend this book if you like sports and the book will help you realize that trying different things and having fun can make you feel better about yourself. If you like reading Mike lupica books, you will probaly find this book very interesting.
The cover of this sports book really grabbed me. Wyatt is a middle child who always followed the rules until the summer after his 8th grade school year. His older brother, Aaron, convinces him to play football in the League of Pain instead of attending golf camp. Tired of being bullied, Wyatt joins the league and begins a string of lies to his parents and his best friend. My expectations were high and this book failed to meet them. I can see fans of Lupica enjoying The League, but not enough action/suspense for me.
The League by Thatcher Heldring was a fantastic book. I really enjoyed this book because it was very energetic and exciting. I also liked how Wyatt's parents wouldn't let him play football during the summer but then they let him.
Wyatt a 13 year old boy who plays golf doesn't really like to play golf but he does because his dad makes him. He thinks that golf is really boring and he just really wants to play football instead.
I recommend this book to kids in 6-7 grade because it has some easy words but it's kinda hard to understand what's going on.
In the book The league Wyatt is an 8th grader who wants to play football but his parents wont allow him to play football so he sneaks away to play two hand touch with a few friends from school when he comes home his parents find out he was playing football later that night his brother asks him if he wants to play in the league of pain. The league of pain is a hidden tackle football league that starts 2 weeks from the 4th of July every day the two teams played and then the championship was on the 4th of July.
I enjoyed this book a lot, probably because it contains drama and contents that I like. The difficulty isn't that high; its a fairly easy book to read. The reason I liked this book is because I could relate to the main character, a kid who's scared to play a contact sport but is still passionate about it. If you're looking for a book that's easy to read but interesting, I would recommend this book.
