Introducing Functional Grammar , third edition, provides a user-friendly overview of the theoretical and practical aspects of the systemic functional grammar (SFG) model. No prior knowledge of formal linguistics is required as the book The third edition is updated throughout, and is based closely on the fourth edition of Halliday and Matthiessen's Introduction to Functional Grammar . A glossary of terms, more exercises and an additional chapter are available on the product page Introducing Functional Grammar remains the essential entry guide to Hallidayan functional grammar, for undergraduate and postgraduate students of language and linguistics.
This entire book was designed to explain Halliday and Mathiassen's Functional Linguistics tome. Which is kind of absurd, but definitely needed. Thompson's writing is much more accessible, but his book is 1/4 the size of Halliday's so it is in no way inclusive of all elements of functional grammar. I would recommend this as a needed companion text if you are planning on attempting Halliday and Mathiassen.
