For ages 9+ months. This delightful series of board books is aimed at the very young children. The bright pictures and their patches of different textures, are designed to develop sensory and language awareness
Fiona Watt is an Editorial Director and writer at Usborne Publishing. She started working at Usborne in 1989 and has written and edited hundreds of books including baby and novelty, sticker, art and craft, cookery, science and activity books. Fiona graduated from Exeter University with a B.Ed. (Hons.), specialising in Psychology and Art and Design. After university she worked as a researcher and writer for a company which published educational material for places where children went on school visits (zoos, museums, stately homes etc). She then taught seven, eight, and nine year olds for five years; three years at a state school in Sevenoaks in Kent, and two years at The British School in the Netherlands in The Hague.
Having joined Usborne in 1989, Fiona became an editorial director in 2003, largely responsible for writing baby and novelty books, as well as art and activity titles. She has written over 100 titles for Usborne Publishing, perhaps most notably the, ‘That’s not my ….‘ touchy-feely series.
Pretty incredible character development. I especially liked the different textures of the panda featured throughout the book. Most importantly, I now know that's my panda!
Jack borrowed this book from the Ashland Public Library. It’s as cute as all the others. His favorite texture is “rough,” and one of the pandas has two rough paws, so that was a big hit. He stayed on that page a long time.
Ever since That's Not My Unicorn sparkled its way into our lives in 2017, the That's Not My ... series have been a dominating the picture book scene in the Millar-Barker household. It's a good thing there are 50 to enjoy. This one comes courtesy of my husband as a Valentine's day present. It's no secret. Children love pandas. They look like they've been designed by a graphic artist to appeal to children, they stumble around in zoos like enormous furry toddlers, and they're even vegetarian so no other favourite animals are in danger. Pandas somehow lend themselves to comedy. I don't know if it's because they are almost as dyspraxic as I am, or because they have all the visual eccentricity of clowns without being as terrifying. But whatever it is, pandas are a favourite with children. Even Neil Gaiman is getting in on panda picture books for children! This little book is lots of fun. It goes through body parts, fluffy ears, rough paws, fuzzy back, bumpy nose, smooth tongue, soft tummy, but disguising the educational angle with cute pictures of pandas in a very realistic bamboo forest. There's a particularly rewarding set of textured fabrics here, although some of them I have seen before. The pandas themselves look very friendly and cuddly. I would have liked to have seen a bit more differentiation between the pandas on each page visually (otherwise how will I know which one is my panda?) but I think the choice of animal automatically makes this little book a winner. Other reviewers here have found That's Not My Panda a real favourite with their children. I just can't wait to see what Baby J thinks of it.
"That's Not My Truck" was a hit with my son eons ago, and I was wondering why are there so many books in this series, considering the materials are not that variable. I guess people are buying them, which is a shame. His nose is too smooth? Come on... Maybe if the animal's coat was red or smooth (implying that it is naked), that would make a difference, but putting in lots of material that feels like cotton or fur is not a big difference. :( (Read on an Usborne book fair with my little one, she wasn't impressed either.)
I was once like you, blissfully unaware of just who was my panda. Save yourself decades of ignorance and find out who your panda is today. You'll thank me later.
I was happy to check another of these off from my son's favorite series. He enjoyed it like all the rest but I thought the Panda textures weren't as unique as other books.
