Book 1: Murder on Port Meadow Anna Hopkins is walking through Oxford’s picturesque Port Meadow when her white German Shepherd rescue dog, Bonnie, finds a blood-soaked body in the undergrowth. Two other dog walkers come to her older, outspoken Isadora and quiet, kind young Tansy. The women don’t know each other, but the tragic discovery brings them together and they vow to find the killer.
Book 2: Murder In Midwinter Lovely old Professor Lowell is beaten to a pulp in his study at the historic Oxford college of Walsingham. Anna works at the college and can’t understand why anyone would want to kill the kind and gentle scholar. Anna’s friend and fellow dog walker, Isadora Salzman, was a student with Lowell in the 1960s and both were members of the secret group known as the Oxford Six. One by one, the surviving members are targeted. And Isadora is next on the list. Can the Oxford dog walkers protect their friend and bring a murderer to justice?
Book 3: Murder at Mortmead Hall Anna, Isadora and Tansy go to a World War II-themed murder mystery weekend at the ramshackle Mortmead Hall. The morning after the ball, the dog walkers hear a harrowing scream. They discover a woman’s lifeless body floating in the fountain. She wasn’t meant to be there. She didn’t even have a ticket. Who was she? As the dog walkers delve deeper, they find themselves caught up in a web of intrigue that puts them on the trail of a lost painting and a devastating wartime secret. A secret that will change Anna’s life and make her question everything she thought she knew about her family.
Annie grew up as an only child in the English countryside during the 1950s. Her father was not always around but when he was, he would tell her fantastical stories, often with her as the principal character. Annie missed him and his stories, which led her to the fantasy section at her local library, thus sparking life-long love of fiction.
After undertaking jobs such as waitressing, cleaning and factory work, Annie went on to study at University of Warwick and soon started writing.
Annie lives in Norfolk. She has three children, Anna, Reuben, and Maria (the inspiration for the first “Angels Unlimited” book, “Winging It”) and two grandchildren, Sophie and Isabella.
Overall, an enjoyable series with plenty of mystery, fresh and well-paced plots, memorable and well developed characters. I could generally guess whodunit before it was revealed, but there was always a twist at the end that surprised me. Book 1 definitely drew me in right away. Book 2 was probably my favorite. Book 3 was good, but there were a few spots that felt disjointed or rushed, and the ending seemed abrupt. The epilogue tied up some loose ends, but I felt cheated out of reading about some of those things as they happened. But I would read the series again and recommend to those who love English settings, dogs, and amateur sleuths!
I gave this five stars overall even though we did not get to solve the most important murders mentioned. Three books linked to three dog walking women of graded ages in Oxford and the body they find of a murdered woman. Each woman has a back story slowly revealed over all three stories. I will mention the story of Anna because it gets the most attention. As a wild teenager she returns home to find her whole family murdered. This affected her mentally and although she works she is a closet recluse. Two of the dogs feature in all three books. One, is a glorious white shepherd who brings in a possible romantic partner to Anna. She binds with other two women. Together they solve several murder cases and Anna returns to the world, so to speak. After more murders in the third book we have a happy ending, but not the one expected. The first two books are great but the third seriously disappoints. Oh, there is a good mystery but the final resolution is weak. It is as if the authors got tired and gave up. The most important failure is we do not get to solve the greatest murder mystery and that is just not on. It is letting down the readers who have faithfully walked the road laid out for us. A deeply flawed five stars. Despite this I enjoyed the books and that made the shabby ending even more painful.
I enjoyed the basic story lines, the murders and mystery, but felt there was so much other stuff going on that often the actual murder got lost in the background. So many characters came into the stories, many with problem backgrounds etc. that made things more complicated. The last book had so much going on and jumped from here to there, that the real murder almost disappeared. The ending was a bit of a mish mash of all sorts.
The Complete Oxford Dog Walker Murder Mysteries Books 1-3 (Oxford crime thriller and mystery box sets)
These three books in a set will keep you occupied for a whole holiday. I read them on my sofa at home. I enjoyed every chapter and will probably read them all again one day to feel the happiness and enjoy every page. I can recommend this book set.
This trio of mysteries provides a wonderful arc of healing and redemption for the main character, Anna, thanks in large part to her brilliant and loving rescue dg, Bonnie. Extremely well written characters and interesting mysteries, all embedded in Oxford, with side trips to London and beyond.
I got about 15% into the first book, then deleted the series off my kindle. I can't abide someone who is so mentally messed up that she mistreats a dog. Until then I was intrigued but I won't deliberately support an author whose characters act that way. Murder people, fine - but don't hurt animals.
Interesting characters who grow, change and become friends as the series proceeds to its satisfying conclusion. Dog lovers will enjoy meeting Bonnie, Hero and the other canine characters, too.
What more could you ask for a solid mystery, a beautiful dog, a funny dog, three incredible women with odd and dangerous pasts, some romance, and the potential for a future with great promise ?
Love their writing. You had me the moment I start book 1. Please continue writing I will buy your next endeavor. Love your characters and how you lead us into the solving of their mysteries.
Very enjoyable. Lots of suspense and character development. I enjoy these three women and adding dogs never hurts I recommend it and am sorry there are not more in the series.
Everyone has their secrets, which are slowly revealed through this three book set. Beautifully written, this cosy murder mystery trilogy is hard to put down and I recommend it to any lover of the genre.
A wonderful English cozy mystery series. The characters are interesting and believable. Each with their own special role in the story. Descriptive scenery and enjoyable.
