Paul Ruditis also writes under the name P.J. Ruditis.

I was born and raised in Philadelphia where I lived a typical childhood with a far more interesting fantasy life. I mean, how many other eight year olds were sticking their Star Wars action figures in Ziploc bags filled with water and putting them in the freezer to recreate the ice planet of Hoth? (Really? That many? Never mind.)

After college, I moved to Los Angeles and was very lucky to get a job as a page at Paramount Pictures only months after I got into town. I worked as a tour guide and usher, and I performed temp office work around the lot.
Eventually, I took a position working in the studio's licensing department where I quickly worked my way up to middle management.

After a while, one of my friends in the publishing industry offered me the opportunity to write a Buffy, The Vampire Slayer short story for a collection she was editing. Well, when I heard how little money I could make as a writer, I immediately quit my job to try it full time. (Stupid, I know, but it kind of worked for me.)

I started out by writing books based on such wonderful TV shows as Star Trek, Roswell, and Sabrina, The Teenage Witch. I have since written over 30 books based some of the best shows on TV, adding The West Wing, Alias, and Prison Break to that ever growing list.

While I continue to work on these media tie-ins, I have also been focused more on my own original fiction, including my teen series DRAMA! and the Simon Pulse Romantic Comedy Love, Hollywood Style.

Visual Dictionary... the Final Frontier!

FASCINATING

Absolutely awesome in the visual aspect!

DK was able to show all the info about characters, ships and technology of all series of Star Trek in a way like only they...

...know how to do it.

DK, only DK. And always in a very accesible price!

Also, it's full color, on prestige paper, and the best of all is that it's that included the spin-off "Star Trek: Enterprise", since that many of the best reference books of Star Trek were published way before of the beginning of this particular tv series, so, there are very few options to get info about that spin-off in printing material.

So, that a priceless bonus in this gorgeous reference book.

This is a must-get book to any Trekker in the galaxy!

For a Trekkie like myself, this book was really fun to read. Although it was only about 100 pages, a lot of facts & figures and photos were packed into it. This visual dictionary covers info from the original series up to Star Trek Enterprise. I am looking to a more updated version of the book that will include information from the newer shows like Picard and Star Trek Discovery… I strongly recommend this book for any Star Trek fans.

I'm a huge Trekkie and I've always loved DK's books so I was hard pressed not to get this book.

Now if you've read one DK book, you've pretty much read them all. The layout of the books are all the same. They all have great pictures and tons of brief information whether the information be about reptiles, volcanos, or the X-Men. That's no different here.

However, maybe it's because I'm older and more knowledgeable, but I wasn't impressed with the Star Trek Visual Dictionary as I thought I'd be.

It might have to do with the fact that I've now seen ALL of Star Trek. I've not seen most of The Original Series, but that was the only thing that was missing. This book is very basic. That's not a bad thing, but for someone like me who's seen all the episodes and movies, read some books, and a few comics, that probably is.

If you've only a passing or casual interest in Star Trek or only know of one or two shows then this book will probably be perfect for you. If you're a hard core Trekkie like me then it won't offer you much.

I'm going through a DK phase. Mum bought me three Star Wars DK books similar to this Star Trek one. Each book impressed me with how detailed and authoritative it was. Somehow Ruditis manages to cram all of the original Star Trek movies and TV shows into 96 pages. Solid effort, even though I did spot things that had been left out. Where's Wesley?

There is so much lore, no one book, no matter how carefully read, is going to cover it all. But I did hope to learn more than I did. I now understand very little that I did not already know well enough... and I basically only was familiar with the first two series (meaning, I don't think the explanations of the others are helpful). Detailed pictures of all the different ships and tricorders and phaser pistols could have been left to different encyclopedias; I expected this to be more a catalog of races and a history of interactions.... And Dictionary is totally the wrong word. It is more like a guide, an introduction.

Also, mind you, it is now dated, of course; it's like "Volume I" or something.

A serviceable reference tool for those getting to know the Star Trek universe for the first time. Think of the dictionary as the "Coles Notes" version of Star Trek geekiness. A must for anyone trying to figure out what our fascination is about.

However, for those hard-core fans, I really could have used another 100 more pages of visual entries with more character descriptions and plot synopses! Hence, this later statement is the reason it's not getting the 5th and final star from me.

I read this as part of my literary celebration of 50 years of Trek.

Plenty of great info, with a thoughtful selection of often striking pictures. Learned at least one cool Trek factoid per page, often two or three (e.g., Trill keyboard instruments feature tri-octave keys [!], Talaxians have two spinal columns, Voyager's mess hall was located off the captain's private dining room, a Borg cube houses up to 130,000 drones, etc. etc.).

A couple of typos and a few grammatically-awkward sentences knock it down one star.

As an introductory text to the world of old trek, this is a good start. Quite liked the fact it took in the Old series, and the spawn of Trek....

Probably the best book on Star Trek ever to be made. It shows diagrams of ships and weapons and a small history. But that's a small fraction compared to what's in this book!
