A true first person account of youthful criminal misdeeds and broken friendships is overcome. In its place is a life on the road. An exploration of the humorous and dramatic of people and our surroundings is examined.
This was a welcome trip down memory lane, reliving such a wonderful period of my life. It was fantastic to reminisce about that time period and the core group of friends. It was interesting to read Mr. Suvak's perspective on that particular road trip, filling in blanks I'd thought would never be filled in. His words moved me, bringing back wonderful memories (and heartaches) of the friendships that helped form me into the person I am today. Mr. Suvak's personality is absolutely injected into his writing and I found myself, on multiple occasions, laughing out loud.
Beyond that road trip, I enjoyed learning about Mr. Suvak's career in the National Park systems. He ingeniously wove his love for history with stories about the locations where he worked and visited. It was like a history lesson and walking tour all in one!
I will add that Mr. Suvak's editor didn't do him any favors; I found some typos throughout the book. However, for me, this did not matter as the emotional connection and experience reading the book gave me far outweighed those misspellings. And isn't the experience what reading is all about?
If you are looking for an entertaining read, that mixes history and information on national parks, that dives into the psyche of a teenage boy and why he did some of the things he did and his adult adventures, then this is a book for you!
This might have been the first memoir that I've read and I thoroughly enjoyed it! In the interest of full disclosure, I know the author and I knew him during the time period covered in the first several chapters of the book.
What a fun book to read, plus I learned a little something about history along the way. It is inspiring to read of the adventures the author takes, now I have to plan more adventures of my own. And I have some new spots on my 'must visit' list.
