Siren's Song: A Bandit Creek Time Travel

Rate this book
After giving up fame, Joss Jones wants a normal life. Maybe she'll find it in Bandit Creek. Or...maybe not. From the moment she moves into the old mansion she inherited, she's stalked by a ghost who drags her back in time to Bandit Creek, 1899. Has she gone crazy or is this old mining town, full of saloons, gambling, whoring and fortune seekers her new reality? It feels real enough as does the ghost who brought her here. His name is Morgan Hawes and he is very much alive. Is Morgan the key to Joss finding her way home or is Joss stuck for the rest of her life as the Siren of Bandit Creek? "D.L. Snow's writing makes my heart sing...When you sit down to read SIREN'S SONG, get comfortable because you'll be glued to the pages until you reach The End!" - Sheila Seabrook, Two Time Golden Heart Finalist Siren's Song is a mystery wrapped in a heart-wrenching love story that spans all different times. I laughed, I cried, I gasped, and I raged. Like Joss was pulled into the lake by Kyle, I was pulled into this story by D.L. Snow. I'm glad I didn't pass this one up. - Zodiac Book Reviews

I enjoyed this book which is novella length and slips between times as our heroine, who has lost her nearest and dearest, is obliged to find her self by losing her present. A singer who is locked up in grief and guilt but putting a brave face on it, has stopped performing. She starts seeing a ghostly form and he appears to want her to take a job as music teacher in a town school.

The landscape has changed over a few generations, and our singer finds herself in frontier days, struggling to survive in a gold panning town with only the clothes on her back - mighty odd ones at that, the locals think.

Characters are well written and we get a feel for the times. Enjoy.

This book is still confusing me, even after a couple of days past finishing it. Not because it was so complex that it blew my mind (trust me, its fluff) but because there was absolutely no internal structure and plot. I'm not one who usually discusses plot, I tend to spend much more time discussing themes and messages. However, this isn't exactly a theme-y kind of novel and the plot is so inconsistent that it makes Back to the Future look like they had time travel all figured out.

I know there are inherent issues with time travel. Its complex and can get confusing quickly. However, I expect a book that is ALL ABOUT it to have some sort of internal framework and consistency. This book doesn't explain how this woman got back in time, it doesn't explain how a ghost of someone who is apparently still alive (????) interacted with her in the future, and it sure as hell doesn't explain how she both returned to her time AND remained in the past(?!!). Let me repeat that last bit: the novel allows Joss to remain in 1899 AND return to 2011. Further, it allows Kyle to do the same thing. Even more confusing, Kyle comes back and they have changed time so he never went missing and becomes a huge star. There is absolutely nothing in the book to indicate that they changed time, particularly in regards to Kyle's life.

This book is supposed to be fluff, I get that. It is. However, its also supposed to be a book and I expect certain things from my books. I expect that the author will have thought out his/her plot development. I expect that they will have figured out some sort of structure for their book's universe. I expect that if they are writing a novel about time travel that they will have THOUGHT about how that impacts their plot and put some EFFORT into logical conclusions. I got none of these things from this author and even though it was a free Kindle download, somehow I still want my money back.

Try as I might I can’t help feeling anything but indifference in regards to D.L. Snow’s Siren’s Song. The poor structural design of the piece made it impossible for me get into story.

The beginning was easy enough to process but things started to fall apart the moment Joss entered the lake. I wasn’t altogether sure how that episode allowed her to slip through the space time continuum into another century, I never really understood the whole Kyle/Morgan relationship, and I couldn’t figure out what the hell John Black Plume was doing in a Homeland Security t-shirt.

I had hoped the conclusion of Joss’ experience would clear my foggy grasp of the material but I was ultimately disappointed. Perhaps I am simply too unfamiliar with the Native American mythos on which the story seems to rely but all the same, I don’t feel the resolution offered adequate explanation for key elements of the plot.

In the end, this one just wasn't the right book for me. The absence of a logical conclusion severely inhibited my ability to enjoy Snow’s work.

It took me a while really get into this book. It was a good story although in some ways it felt like it moved too slowly and I others it felt like it moved too quickly.

(SPOILERS MAY BE PRESENT)

Joss Jones is unsatisfied with her life and just wants some normalcy after a childhood as a teen idol singer. She hopes she'll find that normalcy in Bandit Creek when she inherits her grandmother's house and a 1983 Firebird. But she finds nothing close to normal when she arrives at her new house and she's stalked by the ghost of a young man who seems to have a message for her.

When Joss goes to the James Ellis School for a job as the music teacher, she learns that her ghost is Kyle Copeland, who disappeared from Bandit Creek without a trace ten years ago. After Joss meets some of the students and questions of her accident, that took her mother's life, are voiced, Joss is overwhelmed and runs to the lake. Kneeling at the edge if the lake, crying out her sorrow and frustration, Joss hears the song she'd been dreaming about:

"Meet me in the Promised Land,
where all our dreams come true,
meet me in the Promised Land,
I'll go first and wait for you..."

When she looks down at her reflection in the lake, it isn't her reflection, but Kyle's and suddenly she's being pulled into the lake by a very real and very solid Kyle Copeland. But when she wakes up she's in a very different place, with very different people. But one person looks familiar: Is Morgan Hawes who he claims to be or is he really Kyle Copeland? Will Joss ever be able to get home or will she be forever known as the Siren of Bandit Creek? And if she does make it home, will her heart be forever lost to a man in 1899 Bandit Creek?

I completely fell in love with Siren's Song. I was intrigued by the mystery of Morgan Hawes and his connection to Kyle Copeland, as well as the coincidence (or not?) of Kyle's disappearance ten years ago in Joss's original timeline and Morgan's presumably fatal attack by muggers ten years back in 1889 that he was miraculously saved from.

I could feel Joss's desperation to return home. From accosting Morgan on Main Street thinking him to be Kyle, trying to drown herself in a pond thinking that water is the medium between times, to becoming the Siren of Bandit Creek to gain more freedom to search for a way home. Then her relief when she sees two Native Americans ride into town, one of them wearing modern clothes from her time, only for him to tell her that a traveler must find their own way to where they must go. It was an up and down journey that was interesting to read about. Not to mention the whole time travel occurrence (who would have thought?).

When Joss is separated from Morgan in the mines on Turtle Mountain after accepting his marriage proposal and the mountain continues to move, she knows that she's being sent home and leaves her mother's gold cross necklace with Morgan along with her love. It was completely heartbreaking when Joss wakes up and leaves the mines knowing that she'll never see Morgan again. She sings Promised Land as a heartbroken farewell to the man she'd left in the cave.

I didn't really understand what the Native traveler meant when he said that time was not a straight line but a circle until Joss comes to the lake and sees herself there crying then being pulled into the lake by Kyle. Joss realizes at that point that they are fractured parts of the same person. This is further proved when Joss returns to her house, notices some differences, and finds a sapphire ring, a wedding photo, family photos, and a note to her from herself:

"Never be afraid of living your life. Never be afraid of loving others. Time is not a straight line but a circle of smoke blown in many directions at once."

(HUGE SPOILERS AFTER THIS POINT. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!)

I loved that the song Promised Land is the connection between Joss and Kyle (Morgan) through all times. In Joss's current timeline, Kyle didn't disappear, but is a famous singer whose #1 hit single is Promised Land. i was extremely happy that they got their happily ever after in the end. Kyle even had in his possession Joss's mother's gold cross necklace, which she had given Morgan in the cave before she was sent home.

"You came back," I said.

"No," he grinned. "I've been here, waiting for you the whole time."

Siren's Song is a mystery wrapped in a heart-wrenching love story that spans all different times. I laughed, I cried, I gasped, and I raged. Like Joss was pulled into the lake by Kyle, I was pulled into this story by D.L. Snow. I'm glad I didn't pass this one up.

First off I want to say that I love the cover...
I really enjoyed reading Siren's Song. It's a short book perfect to read on a lazy afternoon, or while in the airport or during a commute. It's also the kind of book you begin reading, and have a hard time putting down, because it sucks you in from the very begining. Siren's Song is about a woman who time travels back into 1899. She finds herself in a town long forgotten, but just when she feels she's all alone, she meets someone who looks very familiar...

D.L. Snow did an excellent job with this book. Her writing will keep the reader on their toes with the twist and turns in the story...that will keep you wanting more. I don't want to give the story away, but I will say you wont be disappointed with this time travel romance story. The characters are very likeable and the writing will take you back into time. I recommend this book to anyone who like Time Travel Romance and Mystery. I look forward to reading more of D.L Snow and the Bandit Creek Series.

Kindle freebies can go either way. Sometimes, they stink from the get-go, full of typos and awkward phrasing, and I just stop reading. Life's too short. This was a terrific surprise.

Just downloaded onto my kindle this week, I was in the mood for something short and picked it up. It's a novella, approximately 2 or 2 and a half hours of reading. And very well done.

Joss is former singer turned school teacher. She hasn't sang since her mother died. (Interesting story there. Not telling.) She moves back to Bandit Creek, Montana where she struggles with who and what she wants to be and where she wants to do it. She's confused. She gets even more confused when a hand comes out and pulls her into Lost Lake, and into Bandit Creek 100 years ago.

I'm having a having a hard time with this one. I'm confused as to what the point was to have Kyle go "missing", have her fall in love with Morgan and then DIE. This only to have her other self go back in time and actually live and love Morgan. Then the present Joss all of a sudden receives all the memories of current Joss while Kyle is alive and they are in love.
Ummmm... I guess I need to ask, what was the point of it all? I get that the author was trying to really throw plot twists in this book but it makes no sense to me. Ugh.

I generally don't go for time travel storylines, but this one was free on Kindle so I thought I'd give it a shot. It was a very enjoyable read. Not terribly long, but not a short story either. The main characters were very likeable. It took awhile for a romance to actually begin, but when it did, it was fairly steamy (not erotic, but definitely not clean). The end was a bit confusing, but nevertheless I gave it 4 stars.

If you like time travel and ghosts, Siren's Song is the novella for you. After giving up fame, Joss returns to her hometown but is transported back in time. Bandit Crekk circa 1890 is a different world especially when a ghost complicates things for her.

I won't give the story away but I enjoyed every page. Entertaining, fast paced and a love story that was emotionally satisfying

Debated on giving this a two, based on the author not explaining one single thing about all the confusing time travel and strange fall out from it. I enjoyed it anyway, despite being confused, so that says something, coming from me!
