This book is almost amazing. There is some cool interviews and stories about awesome musicians and it's pretty well written. The author has a little bit of a strange fetishization for the bluesmen / soul singers he's documenting but is mostly on the nose. There are a few chapters that seem like he wrote them because he couldn't get his hands on a better artist- how is your lineup really, Aretha, Ray Charles, Bo Diddley and The Action? Like What? Why them? Anyhow, his philosophical asides about if musicians are actually sculptors because their sound carves physical objects (vinyl) get a little thin but are at least neat. It's a fun read and it got me into the Chiffons, so who's complaining.
