Set in the 1950s, The Loser is a superb tale of young adults coming of age as the country struggles to find a new identity, torn between the innocence of the past and the turbulence of the decade looming ahead. The basic conflict is the balance between conformity and non-conformity, and it develops during Dietz' (a high school junior) brief romance with Denny Hawks, a Harvard flunk-out masquerading as a drop-out.
