Fly Guy and Buzz are off on another exciting field trip. This time, they're visiting the fire station! There, they will learn all about firefighters, fire trucks, and fire safety. They'll even get to zoom down the fire pole and try on a firefighter helmet! Come along to learn all about firefighters in this fun nonfiction reader. Award-winning author/illustrator Tedd Arnold really brings nonfiction to life!
Tedd grew up with three brothers. His family lived on a farm in Pennsylvania for several years then returned to Elmira until Tedd was ten years old. His father's work then required that they move to Gainesville, Florida. There, Tedd's first art lessons in an abandoned dentist's office over the Happy Hour pool hall eventually led to a fine arts degree from the University of Florida.
He and his wife, Carol, started their family in Tallahassee where Tedd worked as a commercial illustrator. Carol, a kindergarten teacher, drew Tedd's attention to children's books. Their first son, Walter, inspired his breakthrough picture book, NO JUMPING ON THE BED!.
He and his family now live in Elmira. His second son, William, now stars in NO MORE WATER IN THE TUB!, a sequel to his first book. He has now published over 50 books as author and illustrator.
Fly guy and Buz go to the fire station and learn about everything that is in the fire station and the jobs firefighters do. Everything from equipment in the firetruck to the gear firefighters use is explained along with its purpose, for example, fire hoses and how they use fire hydrants to pump more water. We also learn about other jobs firefighters do which consist of rescuing people from floods, car accidents, and blizzards. The photographs in the book show real-life firefighters working together to complete tasks to help save people. For example, one of the photos showed multiple firefighters holding a hose to help put out the fire. They do this in teamwork to help control the direction the water is pointed at since the pressure is very strong. We are able to see in many of the photos how firefighters work together to complete their tasks more effectively. I would include this in a classroom because it has both cartoon illustrations of Fly Guy and digital photographs of firefighters and the equipment which I find could get the attention of readers to read nonfiction.
Young children are always fascinated by firefighters and firefighting, and PreK and early elementary curriculum units often focus on fire safety and firefighters as community helpers. This attractive book, illustrated with both clearly labeled color photographs and cartoonish illustrations of Buzz and Fly Guy, is a wonderful addition to earlier books on this topic. There is enough of a narrative to make this a great read-aloud choice for classes and groups, and the beginning reader format makes it perfect for early independent readers as well. Highly recommended for school, public, and classroom libraries.
Fly Guy takes a trip to the nearest fire station and shows what firefighters do.
This is a good book for beginning readers. It explains with words and photos what firefighters do, what equipment they use, and how they stay in shape. What is nice is that a lot of little kids want to be firefighters and this shows what is involved and that anyone can be a firefighter. I also learned a few things I did not know (no, I'm not going to say what I didn't know!)
A really fun Fly Guy book about fire fighters. I learned that they get all their gear on in less than a minute, and the great weighs fifty pounds! Some fire fighters have medical training. I also didn't know there are fire rescue boats. I think it's pretty crazy that some fire fighters are volunteers while some people get paid millions of dollars to play with a ball or act in a movie. Anyway, I really enjoyed this book.
I like firefighters because they help people. I think it is cool how they work together to help people who are hurt. I want to be a firefighter when I grow up. (Maybe) This book has tips to help you know what to do in a fire.
Fly Guy and Buzz end up in a fire station learning about fire safety, the trucks, and the firefighters. They get to see all the stuff up close and personal- even the fireman's pole! This field trip is so cool because they get to try on the helmet's real firefighter's use.
These books are so cute because they're told through the eyes of flies, and yet, still very informational. The facts are presented in cool ways, not in a boring textbook type of way.
This book would be good to implement when talking about fire safety at an elementary. It would be neat to have a unit full of different careers including policemen, firefighters, doctors, etc. and getting to go to their work places.
Fly Guy and Buzz take readers on a tour of the fire station where they learn about the heavy protective gear the firefighters must wear and how they train. Young readers will enjoy the book since it is filled with photographs and plenty of interesting facts, but I'm not sure that Fly Guy and Buzz are all that necessary to the exposition. Still, it's a fast read filled with plenty of trucks and action, and will attract readers.
This beginner reader series uses Fly Guy and Buzz to present non-fiction topics with real photographs. I liked the pronunciation key for words pertaining to the topic which could be new like equipment and extinguish, but extinguisher appeared as a label a couple pages before the key. The book presented interesting information and showed both male and female firefighters, but no non-Caucasians were shown until the final spread with portraits.
This book talks all about firefighters. Fly guys takes you all over the firehouse to tell you what they wear to what they do. It even tells you a little bit about the history of firefighters.
I like this book a lot. I loved all the pictures because they were of real life people. This would be things that kids would see in real life. I also enjoyed how Fly Guy was on every page.
This would be a great book when talking about firefighters. I would recommend this book.
Fly Guy is a popular elementary grades choice for reading. This particular one was fun and informational as well. The pictures are real and interesting and they definitely keep the kiddos engaged. Fly Guy is a little annoying to me, honestly, but it makes a fun read for kids and he helps keep them interested! I am guessing that boys will be more drawn to this book, as it is all about firefighters and their gear and equipment and machines!
Fly Guy and Buzz go to a fire station and learn all about the equipment and a little about the history of firefighters! This book has real pictures to show the fire trucks and fire station accurately. I enjoyed this book, and think it would be very useful in a classroom. This could be used to talk about fire fighters before taking a field trip to a fire station or even when talking about fire safety.
I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of content this book covers. I was worried that it might be silly given the humorous nature of the Fly Guy books, but Tedd Arnold did a good job of taking the subject seriously and presenting quite a bit of information in a way that is accessible for young children.
Nicely updated fire fighter book. Fly Guy continues his popularity from fiction reads into non-fiction. Nice composite of pictures and text...good intro to reading non-ficiton...our newest and most tested skill of core curriculum.
Well, I missed the first three non-fiction installments with Fly-Guy and Buzz. The Firefighter edition is sure to have appeal among young, newly fluent readers with a penchant for all things fire fighting related. Attractively packaged with plenty of photographs.
A fun fact filled book on firefighters starring Fly Guy and Buzz. Nice combination of the characters and real photographs, clear explanations on the role of firefighters, their job, their equipment, their training.
Firefighters are important because they help people when there's a fire. Their pants and boots are connected, they wear special gear to keep them safe in the fire.
This fly guy book is also super cute! On this one, Buzz and Fly Guy are visiting a fire station and learning about fire trucks and fire safety! This book is great for showing photos and also it is covering important facts and things that students need to know! They will love this book!
