Where do I start?

The end. So, my husband gets this package (heh-package)in the mail with this book Alarm by Mike Daily. Who the fuck is Mike Daily? Check said package, it's from a friend of ours--at one time I'd say 'close' friend, not so much anymore. It's been almost a year since our last interaction, which was a 4 hour visit only to blown off for the promise of sex. Yeah, well...

So, off the bat, this Mike Daily guy isn't getting a fair shake. Sorry.

After thumbing through the book, I realize WHY he sent it to us, there are 2 CDs included, he plays on one of them--okaaaay. But, as I've stated before: I.am.a.good.friend.

Okay, here's the thing. I know this O'Grady character all too well. I spent my twenties with guys like this. I remember the Peter Pan complex, the lack of commitment, the poverty, the aimlessness, the indecisions, the shrouded narcissism.

But, I grew up. I can't say rightly that I feel like a grown up, but I can say 'been there, done that, moved on'.

Now, I guess I can see how some people feel that this was a time in their lives that they wanted to document, to reflect upon, to share with others. Not me. I remember lending out money and eating sno-cones for dinner, thankyouverymuch.

So, yeah, this novel wasn't really for me. Yay for O'Grady for figuring out what he wanted to do with his life (sorta) I have to say, I feel more for the bystanders in his little play.

But, that's just me.

This book was sent to me personally by the author after chatting with him online.

Personally it was a really deep and intricate experience. I can understand why certain individuals would despise a books such as this one, with a lifestyle like this. Not everyone understands how to keep reaching for their goals, some of us need to drop everything and run; which is why this book is so great. I can relate to it in a big way. It has inspired me to keep going in any direction I can. It made me realize that I don't need objectives or aspirations to live a full and plentiful life, that I can just breath and keep moving.

The plot takes place after a few individuals are found as being contaminated by Anthrax. The main character... The Narrator, takes us through his everyday life that is uncanny and desperate because everything has become uncanny and desperate. He has lost his will to continue thinking and dreaming, but he still is doing both. It all has just turned sterile and then from the bottom of his stomach he decides to just leave.

So far this is all over the place but there's something very, very real here. Saw the author perform some of the novel (to music, more than reading) at the FC2 conference and it was great. The included albums fall a little short of live, but don't they always? It holds up to reading in quiet, I think. Worth a look. More as I finish.
