Emily Carr's passionate, vibrant nature paintings have made her one of Canada's best-known and best-loved artists, drawing favorable comparison to the work of Georgia O'Keefe, Edvard Munch, and Vincent van Gogh. She was also a popular writer whose books are still widely read. Beloved The World of Emily Carr pays tribute to the art and writing of this singular talent who dedicated her life to portraying the powerful majesty of the coastal landscape, the lush rain forest, and the monumental totem poles carved by the native people of British Columbia. The 40 full-color paintings included are from the collection of the Vancouver Art Gallery and rank among her most popular. Each is accompanied by short quotations from her writing. An introduction by Robin Laurence explores the life of this unconventional and gifted woman.
I wanted to learn more about Emily Carr and this was a good way to do so. In my opinion a well put together book with the quotes and beautiful artwork. I liked how the art was put chronologically so one could truly tell the evolution of Carrs technique and mentality towards the motive and painting as a whole.
A short book about one of my favorite female artists. She connected deeply with the forests of Canada, I feel very much connected with her views and feelings about nature. I ended up feeling inspired reading this book.
