About the author

Nguyễn Hữu Ngọc was a Vietnamese writer and journalist.
Hữu entered the Lycée du Protectorat and went on to graduate with degrees in philosophy and law. During the First Indochina War, his skills in Chinese, English, French, and German were put to use by the North Vietnam government. During the 1950s, he worked in the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army and was editor-in-chief of Tia lửa, a French-language propaganda newspaper.

Nếu chỉ có 10-15 phút/ ngày để đọc sách thì cuốn sách này thực sự phù hợp để tận dụng khoảng thời gian đó 1 cách có ý nghĩa. Mỗi bài viết chỉ ngắn vài trang, nhưng bàn về nhiều khía cạnh về Việt Nam (không chỉ về văn hoá mà còn cả lịch sử; không chỉ là các giá trị truyền thống mà còn cả các xu thế đang len trong cuộc sống hằng ngày)
Mình đọc rả rích cuốn này mỗi ngày 1 chút giống như 1 món ăn tinh thần nhẹ nhàng. Thỉnh thoảng đọc lại cả các bài đã đọc cũng vẫn thấy được chút gì đó thú vị, mới lạ.

This oddly meandering compendium is written in the style of what I presume is the Confucian essayist speculating on the vagaries of existence. There is little to no critical edge here and the self-congratulatory tone kind of bothers me but there is no denying this guy knows his traditional Vietnamese culture forwards and back.

For those that truly want to learn about Vietnamese culture and are not satisfied with the war stories or tour guidebooks. Highly recommended. Beautifully written and lovely to read. A big book and heavy.

If you wish to get to know about this South East Asian country's ethnic culture and its interesting, unique aspects, from the analysis of an experienced cultural scholar, I think this is one of those useful guides. I can understand this scholar's discovery and analysis of the ethnic culture in this nation. He also wrote from his own experience and observation. I think it is quite comprehensive and able to provide some novel perspectives towards culture - a debatable matter.

This book is a collection of newspaper columns, something like Dave Barry, but focused on Vietnamese culture (both traditional and modern). It's a niche topic, but if you're interested in knowing more about Vietnam outside the context of war, this is a good book to pick up. It lacks the dryness of some more academic books.

Một số bài về văn hóa, lịch sử, các dân tộc (chủ yếu ở phần đầu) thì hay, mới mẻ, ý nghĩa với mình. Nhưng sau có nhiều bài luận, phân tích theo đánh giá của bác thì mình không thích lắm vì nhiều khi hơi cảm nhận cá nhân.

Bác Hữu Ngọc đã làm rất tốt trong cả 3 cuốn sách. Nội dung cuốn hút, nhiều thông tin nhưng không bị nhàm chán. Những nội dung trong sách cũng được sắp xếp đi theo mạch cụ thể, thay vì chỉ là những mẩu thông tin rời rạc.
