For anyone preparing to step into a leadership role--be it a corporate CEO, business team leader, church deacon, or head of a household--this unique collection of quotes from 100 great leaders of armies, social movements, political revolutions, fashion revolutions, businesses, and nations is sure to inspire. From Abraham Lincoln to Martin Luther King, Jr., from Napoleon to Coco Chanel, readers will encounter such inspiring words to lead by
"It is not fair to ask of others what you are not willing to do yourself." (Eleanor Roosevelt); "You do not lead by hitting people over the head--that's assault, not leadership." (Dwight D. Eisenhower); and "What you cannot enforce, do not command." (Sophocles).
The essential and eloquently expressed principles in this book will motivate readers to lead with passion and compassion and teach them how to identify and achieve what is best for the group.
"Some may ask where I get the authority to compile such a work, and attach such lofty claims to it. I have no advanced business degrees myself, but I have labored in an assortment of metaphorical vineyards over the course of the past four decades, from entry level to senior management positions, in government and in the private sector, and I have paid attention to the commonalities and repetitive patterns around me.
In an era when hit television programs like The Office and award-winning novels like And Then We Came To The End are documenting the futility and anomie that is so often a part of our shared work experience, and the economic chaos all around us demonstrates the inadequacy of so-called professional expertise, the universal verities of business presented in MBA IN A BOOK are more relevant than ever."
“I’ve been in publishing for more than three decades, but I try to keep current.”
So wrote Les Pockell about himself for an in-house publication. Les didn’t just “keep current” – he had an encyclopedic knowledge of everything past, present and future in every field imaginable. He had an insatiable appetite for learning, and for passing along all the wisdom he’d accumulated to the editors he worked with and mentored over his many years in publishing.
His vitality was contagious; his opinions were strong; his brilliance was dazzling. He was well-loved by so many, and will be deeply missed.
Synchronicity is a wonderful thing indeed. I literally had this little book fall off of a shelf on my foot while searching for a reference book for a seminar that I was giving. Not letting a wink from the cosmos ho un-heeded, I tossed the book on my bedside table for a quick read before bed. It was one of many that kept me company during my dance with insomnia. Sometimes I lead, sometimes "she" does.
This is a nice little collection of quotes. I have seen better and I have seen much worse. As a pastor who is quite sick of the seminars and motivational events that they whore at us, I tend to avoid many things that have "LEADERSHIP" emblazoned upon it. Sorry, but Bill Hybels ruined it for me when I saw him be a total ass to a random set of elderly fans at the aeroport. Not too nice, nor Christian there Billy boy... anyway, I digress.
The book's quotes are predicated upon Sun Tzu's 5 principals (Intelligence, Trustworthiness, Humaneness, Courage, and Discipline)and tie in nicely in most accounts. I think all can glean a bit of wisdom from this little book.
You may be wondering why I mentioned synchronicity at the beginning of this review? If you know me well, you know that my Attention Deficit Syndrome not only runs in my life, it gallops (wink). But there is a method to my (hey, there's a bird!!) madness... After having this land on my foot on a sleepless night, the following day, I randomly visited a spiritual centre for escape and prayer. Turns out they were getting ready to dissolve as their leaders were jumping ship. Many of the congregants felt lost and abandoned and were getting ready to resign themselves to fate. I just happened to be looking for a place to plant an interfaith spiritual centre. Just haven't found the right "vibe" after years of searching. Funny how life has a way of happening when we are busy making other plans.... in a few weeks, I should be their new spiritual "leader" if it is meant to be.
I find it very powerful to have just a single sentence on a page for reflection. Not all are great, but it's an interesting exercise to simply read the statements without commentary.. I found it very helpful to read leadership concepts from a wide variety of authors and personality types from several different millennia. Not for everyone. Probably wouldn't purchase but checked out a digital copy from the library.
This is a book of wisdom lived, learned and spoken from the hearts of world renown leaders. Among the pages there is nothing new but rather there is the echo of wisdom whispered from across the ages. The messages are inspiring, encouraging and challenging and serves to remind us of what we already know. This is worthy of a second read.
read as an adobe pdf e-book from OverDrive content reserve, checked out online from the library--free 21 day loan. Awesome. Structured like Sun Tzu's "the Art of War." Short, easy read of quotes from famous leaders.
A book of merely quotes on leadership divided into five sections\categories to explain leadership principles. I probably like it more if it contains how-to-get-there explanation, a brief about the principles, or a story behind it.
Odd little piece (can't bring myself to call it a book really). Frankly, I'd be embarrassed say I wrote a book and sought publication for this. Following the 1 page introduction comes 100 quotes on 5 traits: intelligence, trustworthiness, humaneness, courage, and discipline.
