Faurot's short book on wényán delivers exactly what it promises: a practical guide to Literary/Classical Chinese. The exposition is clear and well written, and the examples engaging. It does presume rudimentary knowledge of Contemporary Chinese, primarily the ability to use a Chinese-English dictionary. This is actually the reason I only gave 4 stars: a radical/stroke index in addition to the alphabetical would be a welcome addition. But this is a minor quibble.
If you have an interest in Classical Chinese this is a good place to start: the descriptions of the literature and the world view are excellent.
