THE POPULAR PROPHECY AUTHOR PREDICTS SOCIETAL COLLAPSE LEADING TO…

Author Grant Jeffrey wrote in the Introduction to this 1998 book, “Despite years of warnings and ample time to avert the crisis, the lights will go out in many cities around the world. Many government agencies and businesses will be temporarily crippled. And the stock market and banking systems… will suffer challenges not experienced since the Great Depression… Moreover, many scholars of Bible prophecy believe that this crisis may hasten the creation of the coming world government that was prophesied to arise in the last days… [This book] will document the extent of the impending computer collapse, what steps are being taken to remedy the problem, and how this crisis could impact nearly every area of your life in the first few months of the next millennium… several chapters will outline practical strategies to protest your family from the worst effects of they greatest technological crisis in our lifetime.” (Pg. 10-11)

He predicts, “In the year 2000, when the Y2K noncompliant computer analyzes your mother’s age to verify her qualifications for receiving her next monthly pension check, it will miscalculate the difference between ‘34’ and ‘00’ (which it will read as 1900) and assume that she is only thirty-four years old. Consequently, the system may cut off her pension checks. The computer will also miscalculate the difference between your sister’s firth date in ‘65’ and ‘00’ … as being 65 years and begin to send her unexpected pension checks.” (Pg. 12)

He argues, “The failure of many mainframe computer programmers to account for the fact that the year 2000 is a leap year means that all calculations regarding dates after March 1, 2000, will be wrong by one day… What will happen to the complex scheduling software programs that control flight schedules, military travel, bus and train schedules, duty rosters for police, firemen, etc., and the complex schedules that control security systems. What will happen when building security systems reject February 29 as a valid date and refuse to open vaults, doors, and elevators?” (Pg. 35-36)

He reports, “Edward Yourdon, the author of ‘Time Bomb 2000,’ calculates that the U.S. military has more computer software than the entire American business community. He estimates that it may have to check, fix, and test as many as 30 billion computer program instructions. It is highly unlikely that this will be accomplished in time.” (Pg. 103-104)

He asserts, “The book of Revelation prophesies that the number 666 will be placed in a mark beneath the skin on the right hand or forehead to control people during the final three and a half years of the Antichrist’s before the return of Jesus Christ. For the first time in history, engineers have developed technology that will allow tiny computer chips that contain your complete identification, medical, and financial records to be placed beneath the skin of the right hand or forehead.” (Pg 150)

He contends, “The Y2K computer crisis provides a unique opportunity to impose a global government solution. Given the genuine potential dangers caused by the failure of the world’s computer systems, citizens will be open to the practical solution of a world Year 2000 czar, who would have wide-ranging powers to find, fix, and test the world’s computers to make sure society will be able to continue to operate properly in the next millennium.” (Pg. 155-156) He adds, “The global elite may be preparing Mikhail Gorbachev to become one of the key leaders of the coming global government.” (Pg. 157)

He summarizes, “The worldwide Y2K economic crisis caused by the simultaneous failure of millions of computers and hundreds of millions of computers and hundreds of millions of faulty embedded microchips may be the final crisis what will encourage the nations of the world to surrender. The need to establish global standards of computer communications, a possible worldwide common currency, and a new banking system may eliminate whatever remaining obstacles that stand in the way of the global government the Bible prophecies will rise in the last days.” (Pg. 171)

He concludes, “The incredible events in the coming months, as the Year 2000 computer crisis impacts our society, will cause many to question what lies ahead for the world. There is a growing fascination with the prophecies of the Bible regarding the events that will transpire in the last days. The tremendous interest and concern of our fellow citizens with the approaching Y2K crisis provides us with a tremendous opportunity to share practical strategies of preparation as well as to share our faith in Jesus Christ---our ultimate security in an uncertain world.” (Pg. 237)

Of course, nothing ‘big’ happened on Y2K…. Jeffrey was one of the more ‘dubious’ Christian voices of the time, however.

I had to stop reading when I made the mistake of reading the back cover. The whole coming of an economic crisis as wrought by the antichrist was just too much. Minus that comment, the book had been a rather quaint albeit paranoid look at the rolling over of the numbers in 2000. Not much happened. Yes, a few ATMs and credit card machines had trouble reading the cards that expired with dates as 2000 and higher and some mortgages caculated payments incorrectly but these problems were fixed.

No lights went out. There's no reason for them to have. The power grid predates computers by 60 or more years! The power grid is far more vulnerable to trees, weather and animals. Train switching systems may be automated but they don't care what date it is! I could go on but there's no point.
