Like others, I have considered the idea of being a writer and I always knew it was a job just like any other but I did not know what it really entailed. I greatly enjoyed reading through this Writers Market publication. There were so many ideas and great advice from people who have and are working in this business.
I am still not sure it is the business for me but I at least have more understanding of what the work really is after reading this guide.
Found this at a used book sale for $1, which was a good deal for an older book (2010). It is a useful book with generalities about the publishing industry that are well written and helpful. It spans a wide range of topics, from getting yourself to sit in the chair to write to contracts and taxes. It has some good general advice about publicity, including before the book is finished. Writers Digest is a favorite journal I subscribe to and the book has the same quality of writing.
There needs to be a lot of love for this book. As a self-published author, with aspirations of having future books published, and looking to break into various other areas of the writing industry, this book will become a tome that I hang onto and reference regularly as I continue my writing career.
The reason I grabbed this book by the wonderful folks at Writer's Market was because it was current. Published in 2010, it gives an updated look at the state of the publishing industry as well as current technology and where these things may be headed in the future. Whether you're trying to publish your novel, sell some articles to magazines, sell a screenplay, or have recently made the jump to full time freelance copy writing and need some advice on how to start your business (and ensure you aren't audited by the IRS), the Guide to Getting Published has you covered. It's a one-stop shop that you can reference throughout a career and at the time of this writing, is completely relevant.
The authors of this book don't try to use big industry slang terms and talk over your head (they do, however, provide a glossary of industry terms in case someone tries to!) and keep their ideas concise. Even the areas that I have no experience in, I gained a better understanding of after reading their designated sections.
This really opened my eyes to the publishing world, and was no-nonsense in regards to how difficult a career it can be, but it was full of encouragement and reassurance as to how rewarding it can be with a little bit of passion, persistence, determination, and talent.
The main information I was looking for from this volume was how to submit a book proposal, and the subsequent manuscripts, but I feel ready to write a killer query letter, and have a better understanding of what editors and literary agents are looking for. The web links in this book are worth the cover price alone. There are a million websites out there with information on publishing, however, these book gives you lists upon lists of the best sites so you can operate efficiently and don't have to waste time sifting through the internet muck.
The Writer's Market Guide to Getting Published comes highly recommended for any writer serious about a career and willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. No one is going to do it for you, but this book will help cheerlead you on your journey.
You can bet that when I do end up selling my next book, Writer's Market will be receiving a huge thank you in the Acknowledgments section!
If your ever wanting to know where to go to get started on writing a book like me this is the best book to get! It gave me so many tips, really good advice and told me things I didn't even know you had to do first and to even how to get stared. It also shows you the ups and downs of going through a publisher company or doing all the work yourself, which helps big time for me because I heard you can do good or bad either way you go and even the book says that too. Which is good because I like that it just try to make you go one way you get to make the choice it just helps you see what goes on.
This book was a general overview to getting published, via traditional or self-published route. There are further resources that can be checked into, and several good tips for building platform, including ideas for blogging. I especially found the "one in ten" rule to be helpful, especially for finding hope in the face of rejection. It goes something like: assume that nine out of ten of your pitches for reviews, endorsements, etc. will be rejected. This book was a worthwhile read. Not an enjoyable read though, considering that the core message is that there are a lot of odds against you if you want to get published.
This book gives a very good overview of the publishing world. I am sure most self publishing authors will find it the most helpful, but it is still packed with good information if you are going the traditional route. The main reason that I didn't give it that fifth star was that some areas seem very dated. Especially in the sections about social media. I understand that anything written last year is probably dated in terms of social media, but in here I noticed numerous references to 2008. Still totally worth the money and time put in.
There is a lot of really good information here, including the view on the market (a little dated, now, but I think still relevant and relatively accurate as of this writing) and how to get any sort of work published - novels, non-fiction, articles, etc. I read it cover-to-cover, but one can certainly read only the chapters that matter most to the individual reader. A very accessible and excellent reference.
This book is the book to get to learn all about the publishing world. It has tips on how to write your book, prepare your paperwork before it gets sent to the publisher, finding the right agent or editor, and many other useful tips. This book a great guide book that I can see myself using again and again.
Great for an overview, but not as specific as I was hoping for. Mostly referred to other resources (which is appropriate, since all that information can't fit into a single book). Good place to start.
