An ARC was provided for an honest review.
"By all rights, my girl has handled herself well. There's been limited vomiting. She hasn't torn any hair out or dissolved into madness. All very good things."
Stats:
➡️H: Vosz. Swooooon.... obsessive, possessive, OTT he was everything! And the words of endearments? Sweetest love, Cora Dear, my girl, my love
Honestly wish we had some more insight on his *ahem* species or his history. It didn't feel complete. Mild Spoiler-> he has the ability to say..🤔... shapeshift.
➡️h: Cora. Honestly, she was very fun to read. But the darkness the author kept hinting at was in her personality was never explored or even addressed. Vosz accepted that his wife has mild 🥣🔪🩸 tendencies and we moved on. It felt unresolved.
➡️Cheating: None between the MCs (Vosz and Cora). But there is cheating between Cora's husband (Olivier) and Cora. Olivier is NOT the MMC of this book, however, per the blurb Vosz takes Oliviers shape... so to speak.. as a result, we see some drama. Vosz (the MMC) only has eyes for Cora. And on one occasion he actually unalived an OW because she kept touching him even after he told her not to.
➡️OW drama: Gonna be honest, there is some. However, again, none of this OW is with Vosz but instead with Olivier. There are some graphic mentions of Olivier cheating on Cora so this may be triggering. But again, Olivier is NOT the MMC.
I am a safety reader and I dislike OW drama of any kind in my books. Even mentions are not ok for me.. but this book wasn't bad for me. I knew Vosz only had eyes for Cora and he treated her the way she deserved to be treated. So I had no qualms reading about OW about Cora's husband (who has a baby with OW btw).
➡️Plot: 3.5/5 -> The premise of this book is good. But so many things are unresolved. And I get that it is geared about true-crime and mystery but honestly a lot of it felt incomplete as opposed to mysterious. I wish we explored Cora and Vosz's chemistry more. I also wish we had some flashback scenes of Vosz pining after Cora 😭
➡️Spice: 5/5 🔥 Honestly when an obsessed man is involved, the spice is always through the roof! Trigger Warning: Remember Vosz is a shapeshifter... Vosz at one point shifts into a woman and there is a FF (kinda) scene with Vosz as a woman and Cora. Cora knows its Vosz.
This is another plot point I wished was explored. I wouldn't have minded if Cora was attracted to this woman (in a way- call me a hypocrite but I've had enough of two-timing Heroes lol) and we had this scene with Vosz changing into a woman. I wouldn't have even minded if Cora was coaxed into it with the promise of experiencing something new. Honestly, the direction the author took it in is not bad either, however, that doesn't always lead to sexual attraction.
But I did not mind it, I actually kinda enjoyed it 🤷🏻♀️😉
"Never in my three hundred and ninety-five years have I made a mistake quite as extreme as Cora. Whatever comes from it, I'll take it. It's worth it to be close to her, to have more than his tainted, biased memories of her to sate me for however long our pitiful existence lasts
(...)
I'll replace it for her later. Can't have my sweetest love hiding from me."
His casual words of endearments... these are my new guilty pleasures in romance books ♥️♥️
"You don't have to pretend with me. I never expected anything real in return, only that you tolerate my love for you. That's enough for me. Let me stay. I'll show you how happy you can be. I'll worship every breath you take."
And boy worship he did 😈
"You're a monster, a liar, and a fucking deviant. Most of all, you're mine. Aren't you? You belong to me, don't you, Cora Dear?"
I love how he's casually seeking reassurances as well.
"She'd made a beeline for the rows of hair dye. I didn't ask. I didn't need to in order to know this was something substantial to my love.
(...)
I watched in awe as she applied the chemical to her hair, being sure to stain every pristine surface she could. Muddying the trendy white and neutral tones with black. The smell was horrid, but my smile was huge.
(...)
She could bathe herself in gasoline and I would worship her skin all the same.
Honestly this book is worth reading, if only to read about a completely obsessed monster catering to the object of his adoration.
Vosz understood when I told him I wanted to do it, that I needed to, and it had little to do with the way I felt after shoving her down the stairs. He of course, insisted on helping with the heavy pieces. Gently pushing me aside, "Cora, my love, there's no need in you straining yourself"
👏🏼 A couple that hides bodies together, stays together 👏🏼
Cannot wait for book 3: Little Lycoris.
