“They have gone!” Yolanda gave a deep sigh of relief as she went limp in the Duke’s arms. “They have gone!” As she turned her head to speak to him, his lips came down on hears.
This was the beginning of love, a love that shot through her like lightening, so perfect it had eluded even her dreams.
He drew her closer still, kissing her fiercely as if he felt he might have lost her in the danger through which they had just come.
Only when a century of wonder and glory seemed to have passed did Yolanda hear his thrilling words, “This is what I wanted to happen last night…”

I think this is one of Barbara cartland’s better books because the hero managed to touch that epitome of heroness once or twice . Had the book been longer and one could bask more in his self denial and pure love for the heroine, it’d be more enjoyable and fun of course. Especially since this sort of absolute love is extinct in even its fictional form.

Impoverished heroine takes job as ladies maid for Dukes mistress while pretending to be French and married to her brother. Nothing strange there.

I liked this historical romance when I read it as a young teenager. Typical Cartland. I preferred sci fi.
