This book was surprisingly good. I had not heard much about this series, so when i stumbled up it I was not expecting much. It proved me wrong. Now, I am a sucker for a good F/F paranormal, and while this didn't have romance, I enjoyed the story-line. I like how the main was a street kid. It gave the story and extra element. Not just how was she going to survive the Vamps but how will she even make it through the night!
I'm looking forward to reading more.

Very interesting and engaging, Whiskey's adventures kept me glued to the pages. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel and finding out more about what happened in the past and I'm eagerly anticipating a certain reunion.

This is a story firmly set in the lesbian vampire genre. The writing is not bad but the story has been told so many times that it left nothing really new or different for this reader. If you replace Whiskey/Jenna with Harry Potter and vampires ("Sanguires") and Humans with wizards and muggles, you've basically got most of the story. Jenna is a homeless Seattle street urchin after losing both parents, whereas Harry has an unhappy childhood with his Uncle after losing both parents, but it's still the same old story. Seemingly ordinary, unhappy, emotionally undernourished kid is actually, secretly amazingly _special_, and with just a touch of initiation/education, this kid is effortlessly transmogrified into an enviable, powerful Someone.

This book was okay, just barely, until we got to some gratuitous gore, lovingly rendered in a flashback to our heroine's former life. Even fantasy gore (and implied torture) upsets me. Also, I never have gotten what was so damned sexy about having your neck bitten. So what the heck was I doing reading this? I guess you can blame Sookie Stackhouse.

Comparing this to KMC Minn's _Virago_ or Jewelle Gomez's lesbian vamps, this could be seen as a big step up, but otherwise, I'm not sure what it was that whoever recommended this series to me was smokin'.

This has all the elements a teen, wish-I-was-a-vampire fan will love. Homeless orphan, on the streets, running from the system. Discovery of her own nature; that of belonging to another species (vampire like) and being the reincarnation of a powerful, if crazy Empress, complete with her 400 yr. old memories/powers. Package that with adults who are trying to control her against her will, makes for a great supernatural teen rebellion story.

The writing style is exciting and although the lebian sex is mentioned it's not graphically described nor is there any foul language, so it would fit into any main stream school library.

I've always been intrigued by stories dealing with past lives and prophesies so I thought I'd give this a shot and I'm glad I did. This was a very good read, intense in the right places and you definietly felt for the MC Whiskey as she struggled to deal with a world she was thrust into. I also liked how Redhawk didn't make the Sanguire into the cliche vampires that can sometimes happen. She gave them depth and an entire history that was engrossing. She also gave them a new language that was fun to learn. Absolutely loved this book.

I love urban fantasy but this story was not IT for me. Everything came too easily for the main character and there really wasn’t much suspense in the story. And after a while her reasoning for why she went along with what was happening became so repetitive and annoying to read. It got a little interesting towards the end but not enough for me to continue with the series. 👎

Remembered too late that I REALLY don't like vampire stories in general, and lesbian vampire stories in particular. I have never understood the attraction.
However...this one was written well enough to keep me entertained to the end :-) So. Two Stars. It was OK.

I'm not rating this book, because I didn't finish it. I am an advocate for the LGBT community, so that has nothing to do with why I didn't like the book. I just couldn't get into it.
