It will perhaps surprise friends of mine to know that this is one of my favorite novels of all time. Perhaps not in the way I think Moby Dick is one of my favorites or the way IThe Demolished Man by Alfred Bester is one of my favorites. It’s a kind of pulp novel Romance, but it is very very 60s, and it has a very poignantly drawn character in the shape of Monique, the model, remarkably beautiful but afraid of so many things in the world, until she meets March, the Guy living in the garage of her new home after divorce .
One of my favorite lines from the book— “She had always know that all things suffered.” Even inanimate objects…
and sometimes I suspect this much myself.
I fell in love with this book when I first read it I think in 1965 or 66, when it was perhaps just published. I don’t want to give away the story so I won’t say anymore but I just would lik to say that my friend M. Who loves to read fiction, While I prefer nonfiction , was shocked Buy it. There are so many things to say about it and yet it is just a pulp fiction story, maybe a
Ladies Home Journal story with a strange twist. Still I will always remember these characters.
