Night of the howling hound. New York, NY: Grosset & Dunlap
Summary: Joe Edmunds made a wish on an Egyptian amulet that made him that Protector of the Undead pets. His job: to help undead pets with their problems in order to get them to cross into the afterlife. While on a school camping trip he is visited by a stinky zombie dog Dexter. Dexter just so happens to be the dead pet of the principle Mr. Hill. Dexter needs Joe to show Mr. Hill that Dexter's death wasn't his fault. In order to do that, Joe must break rules, get lost, and get into trouble in order for Mr. Hill to find a new puppy who will take his guilt away.
Questions:
1. How does Joe feel about his job as the Protector of Undead Pets?
2. Why do you think Joe doesn't want to tell his friend Matt about his power/job?
3. Why do you think getting a new puppy who is well behaved helped Mr. Hill overcome his guilt?
4. How does being the Protector of the Undead Pets interfere with Joe's life?
5. What do you think people (characters in the story, such as, Mr. Hill, Matt, Spiker, etc.) would say to Joe if he shared his secret?

A boy, who can talk to dead animals that are stuck in limbo, helps a hound help its master.

This children’s book had an odd story line that worked reasonably well.
